I post about this art show every year :) It’s a great exhibit for a great cause. The 7th annual Doctors and Derrieres exhibition and silent auction will take place on April 27th from 7 – 11pm at Enterprise Square, 10230 – Jasper Ave, Edmonton, Alberta. This year the exhibit will feature over 35 local artists! The full exhibit runs from April 19 – 27th.

A bit about Doctors & Derrieres:
Doctors and Derrieres is a fundraising event co-founded in 2006 by Edmonton based artist and show curator Roger Garcia. The idea behind this fundraiser is to have medical students pose nude for talented local artists and sculptors. Art pieces in diverse mediums celebrating the human body are then donated by each artist to be sold at the main event each year to raise funds for an emergency health Project in El Salvador. All proceeds support Change for Children’s Emergency Social Health Fund. A community-led grassroots initiative in rural El Salvador that provides health care in underserved areas. Over the past 6 years, the event has raised over $50,000. Doctors and Derrieres is hosted by Roger Garcia and University of Alberta medical students in partnership with Change for Children Association and Christian Based Communities of El Salvador (CEB’S) with donated support from the Harcourt House.

We are pleased to be showing recent work from New York based painter Tad Wiley, his third exhibition in our gallery. For this show Wiley has chosen 28 from a group of 50 paintings on vellum paper that have occupied him since June of 2010. Approaching paper with the same rigor he brings to his wood panels, Wiley states,

“The vellum support has been a perfect choice in that its smooth surface allows the paint to sit right up on top. However the surface is not without ‘tooth’, which traps the more thinned out color in a way reminiscent of the application of tusche on a lithography stone. The translucent cast allows overspills to creep around the back surface and appear on the front in a ‘ghosting’ fashion.”

Wiley’s shift from his accustomed oil-based enamel to an alkyd painting medium for this series has allowed more spontaneity, a looser handling with expanded options for form and color within the field, resulting in a very dynamic body of work. In our new small gallery, we will show a selection of paintings in enamel on wood. Both bodies of work continue to develop Wiley’s geometric language with its traces of architecture, wood joinery, and the natural world.

Eleanor Ettinger Gallery is pleased to present the most recent works of artist Michael De Brito in his third solo exhibition.  The show will be the gallery’s first exhibition at their new location in Chelsea and the first multimedia show in its history. To celebrate the show, the gallery will host an opening reception on the evening of June 2, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For his “Larger Than Life” exhibit, De Brito will utilize different mediums to trigger the senses and create the illusion of transporting the audience to the scenes from his works. The show will consist of nine large scale oil paintings accompanied by the artist’s first video installation. De Brito is also installing a replica of the kitchen which is the setting for many of his works. “Larger Than Life” will include De Brito’s largest scale works created to date.

“With my ‘Larger Than Life’ exhibit, my goal is to bridge the gap between myself and the viewer. Both the video installation and the kitchen replica help bring my paintings to life and give the audience a deeper emotional connection to my work,” said De Brito.

The Autumn Society & Lunar Boy Gallery join forces to bring you “THIS IS OUR TIME NOW” (A GOONIES ART SHOW), an exclusive Goonies art show in Astoria, Oregon (where the movie was filmed!).

Artist Kareem Rizk has three pieces currently on display in a collage exhibtion at Gestalten space in Berlin.

“For their opening show, Gestalten Space presents ‘Cutters Edges’ – assembled by American artist and curator James Gallagher. Bringing together over 50 international artists and showcasing more than 160 works, ‘Cutters Edges’ illustrates the range and depth of inspiring work, celebrating a new heyday of contemporary collage.”

London Miles is very excited to announce our next
exhibition titled ‘Literal.eyes’. An all-new group show that takes a
closer look at the content found inside the dusty book covers of iconic
written works by great literary masters. Whether inspired by a novel,
poem, or a poignant phrase from their chosen literary piece, 30 artists
from across Europe are recreating how they visually and literally
interpret their all time favourite piece of narrative into a painting.

Iconic writers whose narratives are being recreated include the all famous
children’s favourite and cartoonist Dr. Seuss to our very own national
literary hero; William Shakespeare.  Artists have chosen pieces of
literature from a broad range of authors, as well as foreign writers
relevant to their home origin. Some examples include, digital painter Tom
Bagshaw who will recreate ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Shakespeare, Nom
Kinnear King paints ‘The House of Spirits’ by Isabel Allende and Camilla
D’Errico takes inspiration from the Opera “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi.

Stuart Whitton‘s work has been selected from 1,000 entries to appear alongside paintings by some of Britain’s leading portrait artists. The Royal Society of Portrait Painters hold an annual open submission exhibition in Central London each year, a rival to the National Portrait Gallery’s BP Portrait Award.

The exhibition hosts commissioned portraits of celebrities and major public figures completed throughout the year by members of the Society, as well as outstanding work by non-members, selected through the open submission. This year’s exhibition will be on display at the Mall Galleries near Trafalgar Square between May 5 and May 20 2011.

On May 13th the international group exhibition ‘The Enchanted Forest’, which is dedicated to the forests and their inhabitants all over the world, will open at Strychnin Gallery Berlin. The show should remind people of the drastic damage that is constantly done to our forests as well as their beauty, uniqueness and importance. Many lovingly and elaborately crafted sculptures as well as paintings and photographs by over 30 international artists will display both the desolation of deforestation and the forest‘s magic and liveliness that we have to save.
10 percent of the price of every sold artwork will be donated to a project of the WWF.

Toy Art Gallery is proud to present “Contemporary Figurative Modifications”, a six man group show featuring Bob Conge/Plaseebo, Brent Nolasco, Jim Koch, Leecifer, TASKone, and Nerviswr3k. These artists take customization to the next level, merging vinyl, paint, resin, canvas, even each other’s original creations to create a new toy art experience. From small custom figures to huge multimedia works, who knows what surprises are in store!

“The Oh Land Art Exhibit” Performance Residency This Week Only:

Join us next week for an interactive art residency (a step inside the world of Oh Land’s US debut album) where Oh Land will be doing a special unique performance for each of the four nights. Artist Eske Kath is creating a literal art world – sculptures, paintings, projections, etc that encompass the feeling of the album as you walk through the gallery.

Oh Land’s creativity and artistic expression goes beyond the music as is just as visual as it is sonic. The cinematic scope of the album lends itself to a visual world of opposing forces: nature vs city, retro vs future, the primitive vs civilization, maximalist vs minimalist.

About Oh Land:
A Brooklynite transplant by way of Copenhagen Denmark, Oh Land has the music and press world buzzing with her individual brand of filmic electro-pop. Formerly a classically trained ballet dancer, Oh Land has transformed her artistic upbringing into a debut album of lavish loops, jagged glitchy beats, and layered vocal bliss. “This album is all of my secrets, wishes, dreams and fears,” explains Oh Land. “I tell stories from my life wrapped in fairytales and fables all happening in the dreamy landscapes of a world I call Oh Land. I hope people will find an escape in the music and let their thoughts and dreams run wild, just for a moment.”

About Eske Kath (visual artist who has commissioned the exhibition):
Eske Kath hails from Copenhagen, Denmark and is the creator of the Light Sculptures that adorn Oh Land’s album visuals. In large format paintings and sculpture, Eske depicts nature and human civilization in conflict, but also overcoming these. Human civilization in Eske’s work is symbolized by the image of the house. The house serves as proxy for the human figure and also as exemplar for humanity’s will to control nature. The sculptures in the gallery, consisting of light-filled wood and plastic houses, ask interesting questions about the durability of human civilization and the artist’s role and culpability as a member of that civilization. At the same time their flickering lights reminds us of the warmth and the comfort that can be contained within the settings we create ourselves.

I’m honored to be producing and moderating the lecture “Illustration as Fine Arts” at the Society of Illustrators of New York.

Gallery owners Heidi Leigh and Nick Leone from Animazing Gallery in Soho, and Alix Sloan from Sloan Fine Arts in the Lower East Side will discuss the crossover from illustration to fine arts, the criteria they use for their exhibitions, the role of illustrative artwork in New York’s gallery scene, and how illustrators should go about exhibiting their personal work.

So, among many of the hats I wear in the illustration field, I’m the vice president of ICON6, which is the only creative conference in the US that focuses exclusively on ILLUSTRATION.

It’s been 2 years of a lot of work to plan an unforgettable event people leave with A LOT from, making it worth their money, energy and time.

Now, we’re almost there, merely 2 weeks away, and I can say with certainty that we, the board, have proudly achieved our goal: This is the best ICON ever, packed with art directors and art buyers, illustration stars, educators and a couple of networking events (full disclosure: I’m the events chair too) that will make sure you don’t remember what you did last night.

The conference rate is about to go up, so hurry! If you’re wondering if it’s worth it, I can assure you won’t regret it- and I’m supposed to be the queen of networking and self-promotion.

Speakers include The New York Times, creatives from the illustrated United ad campaign, Christoph Niemann, DreamWorks, Yuko Shimizu, Random House, Tim Biskup, Wired, Taschen and Bil Donovan among others.

On July 9-10th, 3×3 Magazine is putting on the first Nuts&Bolts Conference in New York. Charles Hively, Publisher and Design Director, says:

One of the reasons I want to do this conference is that I don’t believe young illustrators get off on the right foot. No school has time to adequately prepare a student illustrator—or designer or fine artist for that matter—for the real world and as a result the illustration industry remains static. Fees haven’t changed in forty years. Illustration has lost much of the respect it once had among art directors, editors and advertisers. But I feel that can change if we provide young illustrators with a better set of tools and that’s why this conference is so important.

What I’ve discovered is that successful illustrators are all very astute business people as well as being talented illustrators. At our conference you’ll benefit from their trial and errors to help you avoid some of the pitfalls of starting your career as an illustrator. That’s good for your career. And ultimately that’s good for the industry.

That sounds pretty darn good to me. I wish I’d had something like that when I first started out as a full time illustrator. I fell flat on my face many times because I was prepared to do the art part, but I didn’t know how to run the business part of being an illustrator. A conference like this, that helps young illustrators know how to run a successful illustration business, would have been wonderful.

I really encourage anyone wanting to make illustration their full time gig to go to this conference and learn as much as you can!

Sarah McGinnis of Tilbury House, a small independent book publisher, recently told us about an upcoming show in NYC that sounds pretty fun, and the really fun part is that you can be in it! It’s an exhibit of kid-sized self portraits by children’s illustrators (though they’re defining that pretty loosely — see below)… If *I* could draw, man, I’d be all over it.

Here’s the deal: The show is May 24th. It’s celebrating the launch of “One of Us,” a book about a little girl who doesn’t quite fit in at her new school, but stays true to herself anyway and ends up inspiring her new classmates. It’s in conjunction with Powered by Girl, a campaign from Hardy Girls Healthy Women designed to “educate teen girls about the impact of media on their lives and empower them use their creativity, wit, and individuality to make a difference.” (*Personal sidenote: As the father of a future teen girl, I fully support the idea of cluing her in to what media is telling her). There will be speakers, interactive art exhibits, music, and more, and part of that “more” is where you come in.

On display (and on sale, to support the HGHW thing) will be 4×6-postcard-sized (“kid-sized,” as Sarah puts it) self portraits – including, potentially, yours. Do it “as if you are illustrating a page for a children’s book about your own life,” she says, and stresses that you can take just about as many creative liberties here as you can think of. Want to do a picture of you now? As a kid? As an iguana? How about a sketch of your studio? Or a scene from a favorite memory? Make it “realistic, funny, dramatic, fantasy-based, even abstract — whatever you feel best represents who you are.”

And if you get it in by May 15 (next Saturday – yikes! But we’re good at beauty in a hurry here at I-Fri, right?), you’re in the show. (She says they’ll do their best to get last-minute works in there as well, so don’t sweat it if you’re a day or two behind schedule.)

- Works can be any medium, but should measure 6″ wide by 4″ tall, the size of a (horizontal) postcard, and must be flat and lightweight enough to be displayed in a traditional box frame.

Doctors and Derrieres is a unique fundraising event in its 5th year where medical students pose nude for talented local artists and sculptors. Art pieces in diverse mediums celebrating the human body are then donated by each artist to be auctioned off at the main event. This years silent art auction event will take place on April 30th, 2010 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Enterprise Square (10230 Jasper Ave), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

20/10 Vision
Everyone knows that 20/20 vision is good, but 20/10 is even better. in January 2010, gallery hanahou is ringing in the new decade with a group show that doesn’t need to squint to see a better future. Participating artists include popular local artists like Mike Perry, Yunmee Kyong, and the Barnstormers collective, and artists from afar whose work is rarely seen in New York, such as Tanja Misery and Marcus Oakley. Plus many more!

“20/10 Vision” will comprise new, original artwork from more than 40 artists – friends of gallery hanahou and artists local to NYC – with the theme of positive visions for the new decade. The works in the show will be reasonably priced so that visitors can afford to start their new year with new art.

The talented Fernanda Cohen is producing a children’s book workshop led by Selina Alko & Sean Qualls at the Society of Illustrators of NY on Wednesday, October 28th. Alko and Quall’s clients include Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Henry Holt, Scholastic, Lee & Low Books and Knopf.

This event is perfect for illustrators who want to break into the picture book industry and need that extra push and solid pointers.
