2. IF : Theory...do animals have souls?

I usually try to come up with an animal related theme when contributing to the word of the week at Illustration Friday. Animals are such a big part of my world, it doesn't feel normal to leave them out of my posts. I knew what I wanted to do for this week's word, "Theory", but I first had to find the right model on Google. I was looking for an animal with a soulful expression to represent a point I'm going to make which is, I find it hard to believe there are people out there whose theory is 'animals don't have souls.'

Animals are known to make choices to help people, their own species, and often times other species. Animals come from a place of pure kindness unless someone has beaten it out of them. They're unjudgemental and love unconditionally. They respond to our emotions, and even if they're ill-treated, they're quick to forgive. They love us no matter how fat, thin, bald, ugly, or ignorant we may be. Animals are used as therapy aides in hospitals, nursing homes and classrooms all over the world. They can even detect when we're ill by picking up certain chemical signals our bodies give off. Many dogs and cats have been known to actually nudge their owner in a place where there is a growth starting, and thus saving many lifes. They lie grieving by the bodies of loved ones who have passed away, and many have waited for years and years by a door or on railroad tracks, wherever, for their owners to return, never knowing they passed away. Just waiting, waiting at the last place they saw them. It breaks my heart.

So, do I think animals have souls? You bet. They're pure kindness of heart and my life is richer because they're here.

Now look into this guy's eyes and tell me you don't see an old soul.

I thought so.

5. The Crow

(A Not-So-Scary Story) written and illustrated by Alison Paul Houghton Mifflin 2007 I am of two distinct minds about this picture book. 1. Interesting idea, flawed execution. 2. Not every recent illustration graduate from art school deserves to have their final project published. No, I don't have evidence of this last statement being true in this case, or in the many others I have seen

6. HALLOWEEN PROJECTS ALREADY?

Good Morning Friends:

Originally, I had intentions of going to the beach today, but alas...Autumn has taken over in my household. Not a single soul wanted to join me on one last summer trip to the ocean, and I even tried bribing with cash money!! Go figure. So, I will continue to dream of the sea breeze and the warm sun on my shoulders. In reality, I will be helping my daughter plan out some new Halloween decorations for the house. We won't put them up until October 1st, but we have lots of work to do.

The long and hot/dry summer has left my garden looking tired and drab. This is all the color she has left...

So much work needs to be done, but I am struggling to find the heart and the time to do it. Clean up for the Fall is all that's needed, so this weekend I will force myself to go out and cut back and tidy up. I bought 8 packages of various types of sunflowers earlier on, but haven't planted them yet. It's too late to have a fall harvest, but I'll plant them anyway, as I'm really using them as a food source for the goldfinch:

I've been working hard to find photos and collage pieces to use in My Greeting Card Shop. Unfortunately, I can't use any of my ACEO images because they aren't big enough. I can't resize them because they'll be too grainy. So, I can only use the scanned images from my 5" x 7" or bigger pieces. I'm also using a lot of photography. If anyone would care to take the time, I would love it if you would go to my shop and rate and/or comment on some of my cards!!

Just on a whim, I listed two "Christmas Crow" ACEO prints in My Etsy Shop. The originals are long sold, in 2005, but I still have access to the scans:

Christmas Crow #1

Christmas Crow #2

Well, I'm off to run around. Meds to my mom, Brayden (my almost 18 year old) to the show to meet a friend, then to the grocery and post office. Doesn't leave much time for art.

7. CUT-WORMS AND COLLAGE PRINTS

Good Morning:

Well...here I am cruising through another Saturday, no closer to creating than I was last Saturday. My week was filled with Dr. appointments for my mom and other "not so fun" logistical messes. Planning and time management have never been an area of strength for me, and as I've gotten older, I think I'm actually less inclined to be logical!! But...I have no real plans today other than piddling around in my garden and watching a ridiculously horrible movie on Sci-Fi tonight with Gary. The Saturday night movie on Sci-Fi has become almost legendary around my house. Tonight, we're watching "SuperGator"!!!! Now, doesn't that sound compelling and intense? Seriously, the movie is simply an excuse for my husband and me to have a glass of wine and share a bowl of popcorn together. After a week of dealing with "Gastrointerologists", I could use a nice, do nothing week-end.

I've strolled through my garden this morning and discovered the always dreaded cut-worm feasting on my Geraniums:

They are hideously masterful at camouflage...

and even after all these years, they still give me the creeps. I must admit, I do take a bit of sick pleasure out of squishing them beneath my purple garden Crocs. They are devastating little buggers and I really have no way to control them other than physically picking them off and destroying them. I don't use any chemicals in my garden that could harm my dogs or harm the naturally occuring lizards and birds, therefore, hand-picking it is.

On a brighter note, I have a flower box full of gorgeous "Angelonia"...

I love these flowers because they look like they have two huge teeth in their big wide open mouths...

After taking in the wild array of colorful growing things in my yard, I'm feeling a little creative spark now. Will it catch fire? Will I sit down in my studio chair and feel exhilirated and worthwhile? It is yet to be seen ~~

Although I haven't "created" a new collage in weeks, I have a huge inventory to make prints from. Considering my darkish mood lately, I've listed 10 of my crow collage prints in My Etsy Shop. Here's an example:

Thanks so much for dropping by today. My loyal readers mean so much to me, especially during these dry spells when my art and writing are intensly lacking.

8. GOODIES AND TREATS

Good Morning:

First of all, let me just give a hearty "Thank You" to all of my blog friends. You have continued to stop by and read and leave comments, even though I haven't had time to keep up with my end of the deal this past week. I can't really put my finger on why things have been so busy and hectic here, but I haven't been able to keep up with blogging, listing, and reading other's blogs. It's true, as we all know, that sometimes "real life" gets in the way of computer time! So...that being said, I think I've got things on a more manageable schedule and I have high hopes of visiting all of my favorite blogs that I have missed so much.

As the spring season progresses, the lovely warm weather is becoming more joyfully predictable. I'm so looking forward to laying my garden walkway this weekend. In the meantime, I found this lovely Clematis that I intend to plant this afternoon:

And I received a pleasant package in the mail yesterday. All the way from England, no less! I've been looking forward to this package for a few days, and I was absolutely NOT disappointed. I purchased a lovely and whimsical print from artandghosts last week. Not only did I receive the stunning rabbit print that I bought, but also included was an extra goody!! I am excited and so very happy with these 2 prints.

Another pleasant surprise came my way this week. My dear neighbors across the street came knocking on my door with an unexpected gift. A vintage set of green enamel wear.

I am planning on using them to store some of my art supplies on my desk. Isn't this a beautiful vintage set of enamel wear? I must say, this has been a nice week so far. Filled with unexpected goodies and treats.

I've listed 2 new prints this morning in My Etsy Shop. For whatever reason, I like crows! Many of my collages include crows and I guess I was in a somewhat crow-y mood today. So, I listed 2 of my crow pieces:

Pesky Crows (ACEO)

A Crow In The Desert (5" x 7")

Another heartfelt "Thank You" goes out to Sarah at http://fortheloveofbirds.blogspot.com for featuring my collage "A Crow In The Desert" on her blog today.
