1. New Eidtions

No, not New Edition, new editions. 2013 will see lots of new ways to enjoy books on my backlist!

Good Night, Monkey Boy will find a whole new sort of audience on May 14th when it published in a board book edition! So feel free to give it to your youngest of readers to chew, throw and drool on without concern. I'm especially excited as I've learned first hand how essential board books are to raising a little reader. Monkey Boy will also be published as an eBook on that same day.

Here's a photo of my youngest reader inspecting the cover proofs Good Night, Monkey Boy board book.

And speaking of eBooks, Baghead and Max for President have recently joined my growing list of digital editions. Look for those at your favorite eRetailer and take a whole stack of books along with you on your tablet computer!

Annie Was Warned is already available as a digital edition, but on August 6th you can pick up a paperback edition as well! The paperback edition posed a bit of a challenge. If you recall, there is a gatefold in the original hardcover edition. Gatefolds are expensive to print and therefore go against the whole point of having an affordable paperback. To translate Annie into paperback, the page layout changed a bit—that last page was no longer a single page, but a double-page spread. With that, I needed to revisit some art. A fun challenge—recreate the exact same style and colors for something that you painted ten years ago so that it can fit in seamlessly with the original pages. I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish. Below, see the original printed page with the brand-new art! The paperback edition will publish just as the book celebrates its 10th year in print!

2. Happy Halloween! Skelton flamingos and Lunch Lady pumpkins

We are feeling incredibly grateful here in the Krosoczka house to be celebrating Halloween this evening. The hurricane's fury avoided us completely. Our hearts go out to all of the folks in the affected areas. And I feel lucky to even be home. I had been in Austin for the Texas Book Festival. I had already canceled Sunday's appearances, but was scheduled on a flight out on Sunday morning. On Saturday afternoon, while signing books with Dav Pilkey, Lisa McMann and Mac Barnett, I glanced at my phone and saw that Massachusetts was in a state of emergency. I took off to pack my bags and head to the airport and got on the last flight of the evening. Sadly, many of my Northeast author friends are still stuck in Austin. Not a bad city to be stuck in, but I would far rather be home with my kids. Not only to shelter them from the storm, but to decorate pumpkins like this:

My three year old drew this. So proud!

And with the storm behind us, the yard decorations are back out on display:

Not only to I feel fortunate to have my house in order, I feel so lucky that folks like my work enough to use my characters as inspiration for their Halloween celebrations. Check out the awesome Nash family below! I had to pick myself up off the floor when I saw how they decked themselves out for their Halloween shenanigans.

And remember Lunch Lady super fan who drew this awesome comic? Her librarian sent in this photo of her storytime pumpkin!

And this morning, third grade teacher Kerry Ciccone tweeted this photo to me:

And that's not to mention that her son made this awesome project for his literacy parade project!

If you are celebrating Halloween and using any of my characters, I am so incredibly honored! And I would love to see your creativity in action! Please email them to me (props at studiojjk.com) or Tweet or Facebook them to me!

3. painting Baghead

Today is Baghead's 10th birthday!

An old friend from the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp recently scanned and sent me this photo. Here I am at camp in the summer of 2001, at age twenty three, painting a scene from Baghead. (I put the finishing touches for the book in-between camp sessions.)

It's been a joy to see the below scene repeated again and again at school visits:

It gets me every time!

Perhaps I'll update the book for current times. Reusable-Tote-bagHead?

It's been an honor to read this book to kids over the past decade. I'm truly touched that kids are still into it and it is still in print. Here's a photo of some Bagheads and me the from just the other week:

4. What was one of the best days of my professional life

Hamilton Elementary completely blew me away with what they called "JJK Day". I have visited so many wonderful schools so far in 2011 and would blog about each of them if I was more organized and if deadlines didn't get the best of me. But I'd be remiss if I didn't share some pictures and videos of what Jennifer Lucas did over at Hamilton El in Houston, TX. She created "JJK Day", which was an end of the year celebration and classrooms needed to win their way into the presentations. Kids worked together to make the most amazing videos! And Jennifer and her library aide even donned their Lunch Lady and Betty costumes for the day!

Check out the decorations put up around the school:

And the craziest part of the day—it almost didn't happen! It was scheduled for February 4th. I was in Houston for the week, but with the impending "snow storm", school had been canceled preemptively. Luckily, it all worked out with schedules for me to return to Houston for this awesome day!

Here are some of the videos that were made for the contest:

5. Halloween costumes

Nothing thrills me more than hearing that people have chosen one of my characters as the basis for their Halloween costumes. Recently, I received two awesome pictures of great educators bringing my characters to life. Check them out:

10. Baghead Pumpkin

The school library at Kuehnle Elementary hosted a literary pumpkin painting contest. And look what librarian Mrs. Mitchell created to lead the charge--a Baghead pumpkin! So cool! I think even Martha Stewart would be impressed!

11. Baghead costume

Mrs. Green from Bright Elementary is getting into the spirit of the season by dressing up as Baghead. Looking for a last minute Halloween costume? Have a paper bag and some scissors? I have an idea . . .

15. Shia Baghead

On Thursday morning, Shia had an idea.
A very BIG idea.
A very BROWN idea.
A very BIG, BROWN, BAG idea.

Shia thought it was a good idea.
The gossip bloggers did not.

Shia LaBeouf is a big fan of the ol' Baghead book. He's been campaigning for the part of Josh in the big-screen adaptation and just yesterday took to the streets in full costume. That's method acting for ya!

16. Baghead

Baghead by Jarrett J. Krosoczka (Dragonfly Books, 2004)

Ages 4-8

"On Wednesday morning, Josh had an idea. A very BIG idea. A very BROWN idea. A very BIG, BROWN, BAG idea..."

Josh sports a brown paper bag and heads off to school and soccer practice. His parents, bus driver, teacher, and soccer coach don't understand how he can go about his daily activities with a paper bag on his head, but Josh proves them wrong. It's funny that none of the adults ask WHY Josh dons a bag, until his little sister finally speaks up at dinner. "Why are you wearing a bag, Josh?" The answer to Josh's bag is revealed at the end, and his sister comes up with a creative solution to Josh's problem. This story will have your young readers wanting to create their own bagheads!

Jarrett Krosoczka's bold, bright and expressive illustrations are a staple in his books, so also be sure to check out his many other titles, including Max for President that was just released in paperback this week!

19. Dark Rival by Brenda Joyce

In her latest Masters of Time book, Joyce introduces Allie Monroe, a young woman of 25 who can heal just about anything.  But dark forces want to use her powers for evil and it is up to Royce to stop them.  What they didn’t plan on was falling in love.  In a tragic accident, Royce is killed and so Allie begs Aidan (another warrior) to take her back to 1430.  Royce is none too pleased to see her and Allie will have to use all her wiles to show him she really does love him while staying away from the evil that stalks her.  An intriguing look at time travel, this is a new look at historical, fantasy romance.
