1. The Sixty-Eight Rooms by Marianne Malone

The Sixty-Eight Rooms is a magical tale set in Chicago in the present day.  On a field trip to the Art Institute, Ruthie and Jack discover a key that allows them to shrink down and explore the Thorn Rooms.  The Thorn Rooms are miniature rooms from different times and places in history.  Ruthie and Jack are thrilled just to explore the rooms, but they are even more excited when they discover that the rooms are actually portals that allow them to travel to different times in history.  But how does it all work?  And has anybody been in them before?  Ruthie and Jack put together the clues to unlock the secrets of the Thorn Rooms.  A very fun read and excellent on audio.  Great for fans of Indian in the Cupboard or From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

2. Searching by Nora Roberts

I listened to this book and I quite enjoyed it on playaway.  It is the story of a woman who is still dealing with the scars of being almost abducted and killed by a serial killer.  He is now in jail, but someone else has decided to take the reins up where he left off.  Fiona has made a life for herself after what happened.  She teaches dog obedience classes while working as a volunteer for a canine rescue unit.  But when a new killer seems to target her, she will have to be braver than she has ever been.  Luckily, there is a new man in her life that should help her face her darkest fears.  This is a suspense novel, but also a love story between Fiona and Simon.

3. Courting Darkness by Yasmine Galenorn

This book is told through the eyes of Camille, a witch and sister of Delilah and Menolly.  She is happily married now to her three husbands, but that doesn’t mean she gets a break from hunting the bad guys.  She has a better control of her magic, but things can still go haywire.  But, when she is captured by her dragon husband’s father, her life will turn upside down.  Imprisoned and abused, Camille has no way to reach out to her husband’s or her friends.  But they are definitely searching for her.  It will be a battle of wills between Camille and her father-in-law.  Will she be strong enough to withstand him or will she wither under his abuse?

5. Harvest Hunting by Yasmine Galenorn

Delilah, along with her two sisters, is trying to track down spirit seals to protect the world from an invasion of the Fae.  Life has been hard, but they have stuck together.  Delilah, a werecat and Death Maiden, is adjusting to her new duties and starts being trained to be a Death Maiden, the only one to ever do her work while still amongst the living.  She has bigger issues on her plate though, such as a magical drug that serves to turn wolves crazy.  What is nice about these books is that they tell the stories of the three sisters and each book showcases a different point of view.

7. Bridge of Dreams by Anne Bishop

The stunning conclusion to the Ephemera series.  The final tale in this epic fantasy chronicles the story of Lee, Belladonna’s cousin and friend.  He is the only one who still feels he has not found a place in the world and who must continue to bear the burden of keeping the world safe.  But one day, he is taken hostage and he must determine what path he will walk.  He meets a girl who is not one, but three, and it is with her and the other friends he meets that he must forge his own destiny.  Whether it will lead him back to his own family or to another place, will be discovered with time.  As always,  Bishop’s books are multi-faceted and filled with rich characters, plots, and settings.  Just when you think you have a world she has created figured out, she throws something new at you.  This was a very satisfying ending to this trilogy.  Although, I do hope that like the Black Jewels series, she writes more books set in this world.

10. Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews

This was a great one.  The sexual tension that has been brewing between Kate and the Pack Alpha finally comes to a head.  She decides to take the plunge and enter a relationship.  But when the Order forces her to choose between the Pack and the Order, Kate chooses to go with the Pack.  Unfortunately, trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes and just because she leaves the Order, doesn’t mean that she is free and clear.  But Kate has decided to take life into her own hands and take steps to change the path her life has headed down.  This one was my favorite of the series.

12. Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews

Kate is now working full-time for the Order.  Her newest case puts her on the trail of a strange man.  One who can appear and disappear at will.  She soon learns that this is a much bigger issue when she is asked by the Pack to retrieve some stolen maps.  She soon learns that everything that is going on is intertwined and has something to do with a certain goddess.  Along the way, Kate picks up a stray girl whose witch mother has gone missing.  As she struggles to put the pieces together, she is also having to learn how to deal with a teenage girl.

13. Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

Kate Daniels has magical powers that she uses in her job as a mercenary.  The world she lives in is a combination of technology and magic.  When the magic flares, technology is useless, but when the reverse happens, magic reigns supreme.  After her guardian is murdered, Kate is pulled in to help solve the crime.  She meets new people, including members of the Pack who can either help or harm her.  What makes these urban fantasy books so great is the depth and range of the characters in it.

I listened to A Year in the Merde on audiobook a few years back and when I spotted this at a Borders closeout sale, I nabbed it.  This is a hysterical, but often spot on look at the French.  Clarke has lived there for a number of years and outlines what he thinks are the 10 Commandments for Understanding the French.  They are interwoven with funny stories, helpful French words, and other trivia about the French.  IF you are looking for a good laugh and enjoy things francais, than I recommend this book.

Georgina always seems to get into trouble and this time is no different.  She is kidnapped by an unknown foe and must live in a world of dreams while her friends try to figure out what happened.  There is more drama with Seth, but he is the only one who can save her.  I think the next book is going to be the last in the series.  It seems like she can wrap things up relatively easily in the next book, but we’ll see.

This book, like her others, is hysterical.  Poppy Wyatt is about to be married.  She and her friends are out at a fashion lunch and, after letting her friends try on her engagement ring, she loses it.  She, not surprisingly, freaks out.  While she is trying to find it, her purse is stolen and with it, her phone.  Luckily, she finds a phone in the garbage.  That is when the fun starts as the phone belongs to the assistant to a hot shot executive.  She quit and tossed the phone in the garbage where Poppy finds it.  Poppy refuses to give up the phone and what ensues is a witty exchange of texts, emails, phone calls, and an in person meeting between Poppy and the exec.  She won’t give the phone up because of the ring, but promises to pass on all information.  I laughed so much when I read this book.  Kinsella has a way of making the most unlikely of scenarios delightful and engaging.  If you enjoy chick lit, you’ve got to check this one out.

A new book in the paranormal romance genre that takes place in Victorian England.  Miranda Ellis has a secret; she can call fire with her mind.  Lord Benjamin Archer also has a secret, but his is due to a failed experiment from many years ago.  Benjamin decides to take Miranda to wed, but she doesn’t know about his secret nor he hers.  Yet, somehow the two end up working together (most of the time) to figure out how to stop a nefarious villain.  I like the world Callihan has created.  She crafts characters that are rich and multi-dimensional and a story line that twists and turns before leading the reader to a satisfying conclusion.  I look forward to reading more in this series.

This one was a great addition to the Lt. Eve Dallas series.  In this novel, Eve is being portrayed by a movie star in an upcoming film about one of her big cases.  Of course, there are other actors all portraying the important people in her life from Roarke to Peabody, Dr. Mira, and others.  While she isn’t thrilled (surprise, surprise) about having to schmooze with the actors, she understands it is unavoidable.  However, the end of an evening party results in the death of the actress who was playing Peabody, Eve’s partner.  Eve is on the case, but it is much harder when she is somewhat involved in the murder and was even at the scene when it occurred.  But Eve is nothing if not tenacious and so she keeps putting the pieces together until she has her murdered.  A well done tale and no blood, guts, shooting, or really any graphic violence.  Not that I am opposed to that, but this was a nice departure.

Eugenie is a shaman, half human, half fey, Faerie Queen who is pregnant with a boy who might mean the destruction of the world.  She has been on the run for a while in order to protect the children she will soon bear.  They are more important than anything else to her, but soon she will be called back to the Faerie world in order to figure out how to defeat an evil monarch.  The latest installment in the Dark Swan novels has a little bit of everything, danger, intrigue, happiness, sorrow, love and pain.  A very satisfying read.

The third book in the Calliope Reaper-Jones series, Serpent’s Storm gives Callie her most difficult assignment yet.  Her evil sister, Thalia, is on the loose and it is up to Callie to save not only her Dad, who has been kidnapped, but also all of Death.  Oh yeah, here Dad just so happens to be death.  She finds out more about her roots and also about the possible role she will have to play in the future.  Callie just wants to leave a normal life, but when you are Death’s daughter, that isn’t likely.  This book sets up an interesting twist for future books and I am curious to see what Benson does with it.
