About the Author:
Keith Knight was born and raised in the Boston area. Weaned on a steady diet of Star Wars, hip-hop, racism and Warner Bros. cartoons, Knight started drawing comics in grade school. Review:
I was excited to read Corked largely because of the father-daughter story behind the book. It was interesting to read about this family of gourmets and wine aficionados. I think that someone more knowledgeable about wines and vineyards would have gotten much more out of the book. I personally found Philippe to be such an unsympathetic character and poor father that it diminished my enjoyment of their journey. Instead of chuckling at Phillipe's selfishness and petty whims, I found myself wanting to skim over the passages where he appeared. If you can muster sympathy for Philppe and Kathryn Borel, then in reading Corked, you will uncover a story of love, friendship and family.

I enjoy a good romance novel and I'm partial to the highlander and historical romances. If you're looking for a fun historical romance, I recommend Paula Quinn's Ravished by a Highlander.

I enjoy the historical romances with loyal, protective, and kind Scottish warriors who fall for intelligent, independent and witty young women. In Ravished by a Highlander Paula Quinn introduces us to Davina Montgomery, a beautiful English lady who is of such high birth that she's been hidden for most of her life. We don't know who she is exactly, just that she's surrounded by soldiers and nuns in the middle of nowhere.
Somehow, four Scottish warriors come across Davina just as the convent is under attack. Robert MacGregor somehow finds himself agreeing to save the damsel in distress and is unwilling to leave her to her fate. He joins the fight to protect her. Though he tries to leave her somewhere safe, it soon becomes apparent that Davina will not be safe anywhere.
Davina knows the danger that she brings and tries to protect the MacGregors by refusing to tell them her background and her real name. Davina's attempts to protect Robert MacGregor and his cousins amuses them at first, but as they realize who she must be, they gradually recognize the incredible risk that they take. By the time that Davina admits her identity, Robert is willing to risk everything that he has to keep her safe.

I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, but now I live in San Francisco as a Southerner-in-exile. I've always wanted to be a writer, but was too scared to fully commit to it until my late twenties, when I stopped working in advertising and went to Columbia University to get my MFA. It took me five years to write Girls in Trucks. I wrote each chapter ten to twenty times. There are about eight chapters that ended up on the cutting room floor.

Review:
I first read Presumed Innocent almost fifteen years ago. I'd been thinking of going to law school and Presumed Innocent is on the list of books that many law schools send you the summer before you begin studying. I remember thinking that the book spent more time on legal technicalities than the other thrillers that I'd read. Reading Presumed Innocent with an eye to joining the profession gave it a certain air as well.
Now after years as an entirely different sort of lawyer, the detective work, legal technicalities and procedural law aspects continue to delight me. Though I've read the book and watched the movie and am vaguely aware that a twist is sure to come, Presumed Innocent draws me in as though it were completely new. Scott Turow's writing remains fresh and engaging.
Other reviewers have mentioned that the book has lost its impact for them, that they're not as impressed by it years later. I have a very different reaction to the book -- years later and after close to 15 years studying and practicing law, I find that Presumed Innocent has grown to be even more gripping and entertaining. Though you might have expected me to figure out the ending given that I'd read the book before and seen the movie, but the enjoyment comes from how Turow built up the suspense and described the trial. It's the execution of the concept that makes Presumed Innocent a legal thriller that will last for years to come. I'm very much looking forward to reading Turow's next book Innocent that comes out on May 4, 2010 -- next week!

I admit that when I read about Clarisse Burden in her large, well cared for and beautifully proportioned house with a husband frolicking with nude models in the garden, I didn't sympathize with Clarisse. I kept wanting her to get angry and kick the deadbeat out of her house!
But as Clarisse's personal history, wit and personality unfolded, I slowly sympathized and could understand why she didn't call her husband on his ludicrous behavior. Albeit, I kept hoping that she would. Getting to know Clarisse - her kindness and generosity to the young reporter, her wry internal voice, and interest in her surroundings - helped draw me in.
Once I got into it, I thoroughly enjoyed How Clarissa Burden Learned to Fly. Clarissa's voice is smart, observant, and a little sad. As she focuses on other people and their stories, she becomes engaged and you see how Clarissa was able to write stories that touched people's lives. If you're looking for an unusual absorbing read, I highly recommend How Clarissa Burden Learned to Fly.
