56. Scary Stories Giveaway Winner!

Oops, I was supposed to announce the winner yesterday. Blog slacker! Real-life October craziness has really distracted us from online October madness, apparently. So much Halloween awesomeness...so little time...

In any case, the (day-late) winner of our Scary Stories giveaway is SimplyK8! Congratulations, and thanks to all entrants!

Remember we'll be accepting entries for the Halloween Kids photo contest until the end of November 1st! We've received some really fantastic and adorable entries already and can't wait to see the rest of what y'all come up with!

57. The Familiars Winner!

I have the world's best number generator. When we have a huge number of entries we use a random number generator, but this contest was pretty straight forward. Everyone gets one entry, so there was no complicated adding to do (yes, i said addition is complicated). I wrote down a number for each entry, cut them up into squares and put them in a hat, and my three-year-old picked. And the winner is!!!!!!

Jessica E!!!!!

I already have your mailing address, Jessica, so you don't need to do anything. BIG thanks to all who entered! And doubly big thanks to those who spread the word about the giveaway, even though we didn't ask you to. That's always appreciated, and won't be forgotten.

Always remember to follow directions. Unfortunately, if you didn't comment AND fill out the form, you weren't entered into the contest. Very sorry, but rules are rules!

Thanks again!
Happy Thursday!

59. The Winner is Betsy Devany

About six weeks ago I had a contest for a first page inspired from a prompt ( __ Always wanted to ___, but ___ never expected ___).  I was very impressed with the entries that came in and will be e-mailing each of you with my thoughts, but someone had to win and the two anonymous editors came up with their choice – Betsy Devany’s young adult first page, Searching For Big Meanie.

There definitely is a skill to writing a first page.  You have to hook the reader with your first sentence, introduce the problem and characters, and end the page with something that will cause the reader to turn the page.  Here is the winning entry:

Searching for Big Meanie by Betsy Devany

I always wanted to escape from Big Meanie, but I never expected that he’d leave first. Just plain disappear. In broad daylight, my chicken of a daddy sprinted out the front door and down the sidewalk, tripping on a crack. Mama’s heirloom silver clinking inside the flannel pillow case to warn of his escape.

Five neighbors witnessed. Two waved. Missy Goodrich yelled “Good Riddance” and Miss Lila spit on the ground. Tobin (who filled me in on the details later) held his right pointer high in the air. The day before, I’d shown him how to flip the bird.

Being that he was only five, I guess he needed more practice.

As for me, if I hadn’t been assisting Bigelow steal a case of Hershey bars, I’d have snatched that bag of silver, bopped Big Meanie over the head with it, and watched him fall to the ground.  With a foot stomped on his big ole belly, I’d make him swear to never come back.

I hadn’t thought about my future.

Without Big Meanie I had no one. Mama was ten feet under the ground, so it didn’t take long for an ole black Plymouth to pull up in front of our house. Right in the middle of my supper: two Hershey bars.

Now I used to like Missy Goodrich, especially her oatmeal cookies with cranberries. (Even though, she didn’t cook them nearly enough.) And I thought Miss Lila had my back. But walking towards that ole Plymouth with a suitcase full of my dirty laundry, I knew the truth.

Those women had sold me out.

The car door slammed and off we went: me and some woman from D. C. F., trailed by a cop car. Miss Lila and Missy Goodrich held hands, waving. Like it was a parade or something.

I gave them my best glare, and then lifted my middle finger to thank them for what they’d done. “Tobin!” I shouted. “This is the way you do it.”

More prompts coming shortly to help you keep writing.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy

63. Agent Pitch Winners!

Here’s Sarah choice for winner and some honorable mentions (there were so many good ones!)

Winner: High Hopes by Lisa (contemporary YA)

You win a critique of a query letter and your first chapter!
Lisa - congrads and email me at [email protected] for instructions

HIGH HOPES is a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s “Northanger Abbey,” but instead of going to Bath, eighteen-year-old Katie Moreland takes a trip to Florida for Spring Break week. There, she meets Hal Tilney, who quickly wins her over with his charm and wit, and who also happens to live in one of the most haunted houses in America – the home where the events of “The Amityville Horror” took place. When Katie is invited to visit for the weekend, her horror-obsessed brain goes into overdrive and she imagines ghosts and ghouls around every corner. Hal tries to explain to her that all the sinister stories about the house are just rumors, but Katie is convinced that the Amityville home is hiding a dark secret. Katie tries to find the source of her supernatural suspicions, but doesn’t know she also runs the risk of something truly scary – losing the guy she loves.

Honorable Mentions

  • Flight by Allison Morris (literary fiction/magical realism)
  • Unraveled by Susan Bradley (YA mystery)
  • Mercy by Jess (YA magical realism)
  • The Last One by Chersti Nieveen (YA dystopia)
  • Waiting for April by Jaime Loren (paranormal romance)
  • The Ghost Writer by MarcyKate (YA ghost story)
The “honorable mentions” are in no particular order and that they were all great!

Next week, Sarah may post some critiques of these pitches so stay tuned.

I'm unplugging this week and heading out of town to be on faculty for SCBWI Carolina conference in Charlotte. I'll be back next Monday with a whole slew of fun new posts!

Have a great week! :)

64. Book Battle: Final (Round 5) Winner

Well, here we are. It's the final results of the final round of the 2010 YA Bloggers Debut Book Battle. And although I kind of dropped the ball on this one because of my busy summer schedule, I've heard back from our last pair of judges and it's time to announce a winner!

Bracket 24:
The Season by Sarah MacLean VS. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver
Judged by Kate from The Neverending Shelf and from Star from Star Shadow Blog

This bracket was probably one of the hardest to judge from the whole battle. Here two completely undefeated books came up to battle it out to find out who would be determined number one. So which book did our judges choose? Here's what Judge Star had to say about the winner:

"Wonderfully written engaging characters that I fell in love with after getting to know each and every one, This story was captivating and emotional and kept me interested from beginning to end, from hating people to falling in love with them."

Want to know the final winner? Scroll down to find out!

Almost there!

One more scroll should do it...

And the winner is... Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver!

And that's it folks! I hope you had as much fun with this as I did. There'll be a wrap up post in the next few days just in case you missed anything.

Congrats to the winner!
65. We Have A Winner

This was a lot harder than I thought, but after you see them lined up in the right order, it looks like it should have been easy.  No one got Tamra Tuller, Kate Sullivan, Mary Kole or Kelly Smith right.  Most only got one right and our winner, CONNIE COLON, only got four.  Congratulations! Connie.  See below for the matches:

Thanks to everyone who played.  Hope you had fun trying to win.

David Caruba’s sister, Cathy Rose is a vet in Knoxville, TN and has entered the Pepsi’s Refresh Program to win a grant to allow her to open a feline clinic for cats with HIV and other incurable diseases.  I know many of you are animal lovers who might be willing to help her help a lot of animals.  Here is the link http://www.refresheverything.com/fivfelv2  I think you can vote each day.

Talk tomorrow,

Kathy

66. Mary Kole Pitch Contest Winners!!

There were so many awesome queries it was hard for Mary Kole to narrow it down to one. WE have 2 winners and a few Honorable mentions. Mary Kole gave some feedback on each one in blue. (wasn't that sweet!)

There were many entries that went over 140 characters some even up to 200 characters!

To both winners - email me so I can put you in touch with Mary on your query critique!

If there is nugget you take away from this - whether chosen or not - it is this: I cannot stress how important it is to FOLLOW THE RULES when querying agents. Sometimes it can be the difference between a rejection or a request! They go through hundreds of queries a week and have to look for ways to say no. DON'T GIVE THEM A REASON to reject you just because you are going to fast or don't pay attention to the details/instructions!

WINNER 1: Blogger Wendy
Title: Burying Elsie
Genre: Contemporary YA
As Elsie dives into drugs, sex & even hardcore shows, goody-goody Shawna must decide if helping her BFF is worth risking all she believes.

Mary said: "I love the character conflict implied by this query and the high stakes. The title tells me that it might not work out for the best, but I’m really curious to see how the downward spiral plays out."

================================

WINNER 2: Blogger Rachael Harrie

Title: From The Other Side

Genre: YA Paranormal

Misfit Verity is murdered by the boy she loves and awakens with strange powers, uncontrollable rages, and an unquenchable desire for revenge

Mary said: "This query kicks ass. It has punch and voice, which is really hard to do in 140 characters. This sounds like something I might really like."

==============================

Honorable Mentions!

Blogger Amanda J.

Title: The Sandman's Apprentice

Genre: MG paranormal

To save her kidnapped bro

What makes a Winner?

I was on a kidlitchat the other night and something someone said really struck a chord with me.

The topic was - "what makes a book a winner?"

People were saying voice, plot, hook, characters, setting etc.

Then someone chimed in with, "You have a winner, when you get an offer."

If we were in a room, the room would have gone silent. At least 10 seconds went by where not one comment came through the chat. As if tweetdeck had crashed....again!

Now, my initial reaction was "you got that right!" I mean, if an agent doesn't offer representation or if an editor doesn't buy a book - than obviously the book is not a winner, right? That's how most of us feel right? Am I alone?

But then, surprisingly, an editor chimed in first and said, "So if an editor doesn't buy your book, then you don't think your books a winner anymore?"

I don't know why but that comment made me sit up in bed. (yes I am a lazy chatter! I lay down and chat while watching tv.)

I thought about it more. All night in fact.

I started thinking about a book I put down a year ago. A book close to my heart. A book I love. A book that I really thought was a winner.

I put that book aside to focus on my tween angel story because I felt it was more marketable.

Now that the book is off my plate, I've been contemplating what book to focus on next. I went through my idea document and picked a couple. Started a couple. And for some reason, during this time, I didn't really think about the book I love. That book was somehow and for some reason - still on the back burner. Why was I not focusing on Grace? After all, I had several agent offers of rep on Grace. Grace was developed - flaws and all. Grace had evolved so much. Grace got me my agent.

Had I given up on it? Had I given up on a winner?

This morning, as I was doing the dishes, I started to cry. (yes I am emotional that way. And it wasn't over the crusted overnight dishes.) Over the crusted spaghetti and old oatmeal, 'it hit me.

Over the last year, I've lost my way a little.

You see once you get an agent, you no longer write for yourself. And I can imagine that only gets harder and harder as you move through the process. Get an editor, deal with marketing, sell to stores. Now your agent needs to love the book as much as you. You are a team. Their reputation is on the line as well as your career. When an agent takes you on - they are stamping their name on you professionally. I don't care what anyone says, your agent must like your work

Somewhere along the way, I started writing for my agent, for editors, for submission, for everyone

74. Book Battle: Round 1 Winners (Part 3)

Time to announce more Round 1 winners. And there are three (that's right, three!) to announce today. So let's get started, shall we?

Bracket 6:
Ash by Malinda Lo VS. The Season by Sarah MacLean
Judged by Rachel from Jacob's Beloved and The Book Vixen.

This was an interesting match up with a unique retold fairytale in one corner, and a light historical romance in the other. While Ash showed a really strong lead in the beginning of our Goodreads group poll, at the close it was ahead by a much smaller margin, with 60% of the vote. So what did the judges have to say?

Judge Rachel made this comment:

While it's not likely I would have picked this particular book off the shelf if it were not for this competition, I have read similar works...for adults, and I have plans to read more of this genre in the future. I did enjoy this book...
And Judge Book Vixen adds:

"I have to admit, before reading either of these two books I seriously thought I would have picked [the other] as the winner. In fact, I wouldn't have picked up [the winner] to read had it not been for the Book Battle. That just goes to show you that you can't judge a book by its cover or its blurb!"

So who eventually won out? The winner is... The Season by Sarah MacLean!

Ooh, we have a bit of an upset. Just goes to show you can't always trust those poll numbers. :) Make sure you check out both judging posts (Rachel tackles the discussion of Ash, while The Book Vixen tackles The Season) to see the breakdown of for each book. And so the slight underdog moves on to Round 2, where it will battle for it's next position as part of Bracket 15.

75. Oops, I forgot. We have winners!

Yeah, so I had these two contests a loooong time ago, but as I'm shuffling things around for my move next week, I noticed these prizes sitting here unclaimed. So here we go.

The three winners of The Dark Divine Nail Polish are:
Robin K
Ann Diana Dinh
Lindsay's Photographys

And the winner of the ARC of The Reluctant Heiress is:
Lisa R

Winners, please email me your addresses at shadyglade(AT)mail(DOT)com within the next 72 hours. That way I can ship your packages before I leave for the summer!

And speaking of comment contests...

You may have noticed I didn't do a comment contest for May or April. With my move to Florida for the summer and my time being spent on the book battle, I haven't been on top of those things like I normally am. But as soon as I come back, the contests will resume! In the meantime I'll try to do better about weekly contest roundups, since I've been neglecting those lately too...
