A belated thank you to all of the teachers, students, and volunteer staff of the Humbolt County Author Festival - with a special nod to Jacoby Creek Elementary and Big Lagoon - it was a terrific experience as usual, and I look forward to seeing you all again in another two years. And to the kids and parents brave enough to GRRR! My heroes!!!
Click the image to make it more legible, but I enjoyed sifting through some Cervantes
Don Quixote quotes to approximate my current feelings towards starting this
Presidential Polar Bear Post Card Project :) Onward and upward!
In the spirit of the season -- a little mischief with a nod towards making a difference.
Reading the latest news on teens and social networking... and feeling older all the time.
It's that time of year again -- hopefully-- and the turn of seasons is finally under way. From all of us fine and furry critters here at Harts Pass comics, bring on the snow (and nighty night to the Ursus
americanus and others of their ilk)!
A polar bear cameo in this week's
Harts Pass. To understand why, read the post below... GRRR!
We lost our dog last week... but there is new snow in the mountains and the salmon are spawning in the river.
Stranded in Kaktovik last Monday I missed my deadline for Harts Pass. Back in the swing of it this week and I will be posting more polar bear photos a little later today as well!
For those of you farther from home, the three young firefighters remembered above, recently lost their lives while keeping our community safe.
Famous is a poem that Tom Zbyszewski, a local kid working summer fires, performed in his state finals for Poetry Out Loud in the spring of 2013. He may also have performed it here at Twisp's Merc Theater, as I swear that I can picture him reciting it.
In any case, it is a fine poem and a worthy tribute (I hope) to the everyday but still heroic efforts that our firefighters and many others make to keep others safe -- even at times at great cost. A humble kind of service that is inherently heroic of course, but never demanding of any particular praise or recognition. Thank you all for your service and rest in peace.
A GRRReat vacation on the Olympic Peninsula... and now its
full steam ahead and back to work. Alas, too short... And, as per usual,
I frequently exercise my own little grapplings with the world through the wise and knowing critters of
Harts Pass. Enjoy what remains of summer break!
Road trip! I'm really looking forward to taking an actual vacation next week. Alas, not a long one, but the art studio needs a little alone time.
It seems like my dog is constantly cleaning. Something that I usually associate with cats. Perhaps wolverines are a bit neat freakish as well (just guessing)... and I'm
absolutely sure that they love ZZ Top. Anyway, I colored today's strip while waiting in a car dealership and watching some smooth sales dudes in action as well. Cheers!
Thankfully, real wolverines don't haul around this much stuff, or have to work, or get their kits to numerous summer activities... but my parenting/people perspective
does seem to slip its way into the strip every so often :) Hope that your own summer's are going Grand and definitely don't miss out on splashing in a mountain lake or two!
The one-year anniversary of the start of last summer's Carleton Complex wildfire. Although extremely dry and fairly warm so far, the land is healing and the rebuilding is well underway. I haven't seen this week's edition of the
Methow Valley News, but
it promises to be an issue dedicated in some small way to remembering last summer's fires.
Tips for Graceful Aging No. 1: Life might just be a little easier with four feet and a less obvious waistline.
Kids at summer camp. Parents... still trying to adjust!
Nothing wrong with being No. 2, although an article in this week's
Methow Valley News speaks to renewed public support for the reintroduction of
Grizzlies (Dangerous N.A. Mammal
numero Uno!) to the North Cascades. Showdown baby!
This one pretty much explains itself. Hard to believe that Kit is moving on to middle school! :(
Another great comic courtesy of 5th grade guest cartoonist, Stella Gitchos. Looking forward to more comic creativity at both this week's Methow Valley Elementary Young Writer's Conference and throughout the summer in my North Central Regional Library summer reading visits. Write on!
Between finishing my next recent book and coaching at the State Track meet, I'm a little late in posting this week's comic. Lucky for me, it's guest cartoonist week here at
Harts Pass :) After a recent
Methow Arts residency at the local elementary school, I've put a few kids on the payroll for both this week and next. Kinda like
Family Circus... except these kids are the real deal! Much thanks to Isaac Carlsen for this week's excellent unicorn strip.
Personally, I can never
quite remember what snake it is that "looks" like a rattler. Bullsnake it is... but no matter what such thoughtful consideration of this particular situation isn't really necessary :)
My daughter asks a LOT of questions. Sometimes so many that I am certainly not this nice about answering them all... Anyway, maybe she gets gets inspired when she feels like she has our full attention. So it goes :)
For those that might be curious, here's a quick photo of what we'll call the "Peace Table" for
Little Star Montessori School's upcoming Puttin' on the Ritz auction.
10 years ago, my wife Sarah and daughter Keeley painted this little IKEA table -- at just about the time that Keeley was starting Little Star. While still retaining the original artsy base-coat of yellow and blue, plus a few character-lending pencil smudges from Keeley's own art projects, the table top has been freshly updated with a couple of friendly wolverines and a snappy splash of red.
So, slide those "GRRR!"chairs right on up to the "Peace Table" and work it out. Friends for life! For your reading pleasure, the table will come with a complimentary copy of
Welcome to Harts Pass - a comic collection featuring even MORE wolverines and tons of local insight to boot. Both the book and the table are signed by the artist!
PS I always thought it was really cool that Little Star actually HAS/HAD a Peace Table of its very own. If you've got kids, surely you need one of these at home.
PPS And it would work perfectly well for adults too. After all, who can stay mad/grumpy/hold a grudge or whatever when you're sitting in a kid-sized chair with bright primary colors and two clearly happy wolverines smiling right back at 'ya. GRRR!
What? NO WAY! Oh... And so it goes! Despite their purported demise, books are still a great window into an entire world of experiences that most of us will never have. Bring 'em on!
