Ag. I haven't delved too deeply into this whole situation, but here are the first few links I've come across:
- NYULocal: Sexual Abuse Allegations Rock YouTube Community. "After the Milsom allegations were made public, several former fans of fellow DFTBA musician and British YouTuber Alex Day came forward with accusations ranging from outright sexual abuse to general emotional manipulation and lack of respect for boundaries."
- The Daily Dot: Alex Day and the dangers of YouTube celebrity culture. "In the early days of the community that now combines DFTBA Records, popular Nerdfighter vloggers, and Internet celebrities, there was very little separation between creators and viewers. But with over a million YouTube subscribers, the Alex Day of 2014 is simply not on the same level as your average 15-year-old fan—particularly since the biggest names on the scene have obviously grown up, while newer, younger fans keep joining their audience every day."
- Maureen Johnson: About the Recent Events Concerning YouTube. "Aside from Melissa Anelli, I didn’t see any women speaking about it from entirely outside the sphere of events. And that did bother me...So, because that gap is there, and because I have the benefit of being older—I thought I might widen the focus a little and talk about my own experience and maybe how we got here and where we can go from this point. Because there are many, many places to go."
- Mellow Blueness: at least 9 people tangentially connected to nerdfighteria have been called out as sexual abusers.
- Telling Our Stories: "A community for nerdfighters who are survivors of sexual & domestic violence. Please feel free to submit your story (or use the ask box to go anon), share self-care ideas, tell me about how this situation is affecting you, ask for help -- whatever you need. We're going to get through this together."
- Nephiesworld.tumblr.com: "Yes Alex does do those things you’ve heard about. When I was 17, Alex and Danny traveled 3 hours (seriously.) to my house which is in the middle of nowhere along with a couple of others who were friends with me at the time to stay over. Alex texted Danny something along the lines of “which one do you want” because apparently he got first choice the last time this happened. Yeah, lovely innit." TRIGGER WARNING.
- Hank Green on Sexual Abuse, Consent, and Culture:
Josh: *sad sigh* There's not a Girls of Hart of Dixie calendar available on Amazon.
Me: *side eye*
Josh: What? I want one!
Me: *side eye*
Josh: WHAT? As if you wouldn't want a Hot Neighbor Wade calendar.
Me: Okay, you're totally right about the Hot Neighbor Wade calendar. But I'm still totally judging you right now. ALSO, IT'S MARCH.
Long story short, I AM SO HAPPY THAT OUR INTERNET IS FIXED AND THAT WE CAN GET ALL CAUGHT UP ON OUR SHOWS.
...in a nutshell:
(Minus the sentimental part. Basically just, I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU.)
So, unless you're living under a rock—even I've heard about this one, and it was freaking TWO DEGREES here this morning—or you don't obsessively follow the YA news, you've heard about Divergent/Fault in Our Stars star Shailene Woodley's take on Twilight's central love story:
“Twilight, I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship. [The protagonist Bella] falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”
Which, really, is a pretty low-key statement. She doesn't insult fans of the franchise, she expresses an opinion about the source material. I'm less comfortable with her comment about sending the right "message", but it's a short quote, so I'm trying to avoid making the assumption that she's suggesting that YA fiction should carry specific messages. Because yuck.
Anyway, as you may expect, she's taking a decent amount of flack from Twilight fans:
To be fair, of course, she's also getting plenty of applause from the anti-Twilight faction:
I find it interesting that so many people are taking her statement so personally... because she said NOTHING about the fans, the fandom, even about the quality of Meyer's writing or even of the movies. Disagreeing with someone, not liking the same things? That is not disrespect. She didn't say that people shouldn't like the book, she didn't say that people who like it are stupid or have bad taste, she didn't trivialize it by suggesting that romance stories are somehow lesser than other kinds of stories or that franchises with a largely female fanbase are silly.
The whole brouhaha is a perfect example of a larger issue that has way more bearing on the "evolution of the world" than Twilight: a disinclination towards, difficulty in having, a flat-out refusal to engage in rational discussion. Everything is black or white, right or wrong, red or blue, and if you disgree with one opinion that a person expresses, if that person doesn't share exactly the same value system or worldview that you do, well, to hell with her and everything else that she might ever say or do.
Ag. Now I'm all depressed and want to go back to bed.

ETA: Yes, I'm still thinking about this. Which is semi-ridiculous, probably, but as I'm a semi-ridiculous person, it's fitting. Anyway, it's also easy to draw parallels between the "if you don't like what I like, you're a mean jerk" mentality and the "people who indulge in literary criticism are haters" mentality. It's all tied in there together. Blerg.

Here you go.
I warn you, though: all you're going to want to do IS WATCH THE REST OF THE MOVIE IMMEDIATELY.
As the limited release doesn't include Maine (at least so far) I really might have to make the trek to Boston next week.
Like pretty much everyone else out there, I love Khan Academy like whoa.
So much that I occasionally go on jags of PRACTICING MY MATH SKILLS, which is TOTALLY OUT OF CHARACTER. But for whatever reason, KA makes it fun, and I find Sal's videos to be both helpful and weirdly soothing.
Anyway, they've partnered with the College Board and created a whole new section devoted to the dreaded SAT. So that's rad.
Relatedly, mental_floss recently posted some excerpts from the very first SAT.
I'm currently wading through a month of backlogged RSS feeds.
Here are a few links that have caught my eye (so far):
More later!
Long time no see.
I've been radio silent while dealing with my annual bout of Winter Malaise—which seems to get worse every year, maybe I should buy one of those full-spectrum lights or something?—but I'm finally starting to feel like myself again. And by "feel like myself", I mean that I'm finally wanting to blather on about books and, like, INTERACT WITH HUMANITY, and just generally do stuff other than play Gnomoria* and Kingdom of Loathing while drinking endless cups of tea and re-watching Next Gen.
But until I manage to get Totally Motivated, just so you know, I AM STILL ALIVE, and will be getting back to posting regularly very soon.
Annnnnnd I just looked outside and it's snowing again.
Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

*HOLY COW I LOVE IT SO MUCH AND I REALLY CAN'T STOP.
Josh: How are your gnomes doing? Did your yaks run away again?
Me: Pretty good! I've even got some emus and alpacas now, and they're all just trucking along. No one's even died y— ...OH MY GOD HOW DID ALL OF THOSE GOBLINS JUST GET INTO MY FORTRESS THEY'RE PUNCHING MY YAK AND STEALING MY STUFF WHAT THE HELL WHERE DID THAT MANT COME FROM!?!??!?!
Josh: I am judging you so hard right now.
I admit to getting a little choked up.
Sadly, no.
But happily, I'm:
OOO! Five minute warning!
...will include:
Fresh off the record-breaking success of “Ride Along,” Kevin Hart has signed on to voice one of the lead roles in DreamWorks Animation’s “Captain Underpants” along with fellow comedy superheroes Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Jordan Peele and Thomas Middleditch, TheWrap has learned.
...
Hart and Middleditch will voice scheming fourth graders George Beard and Harold Hutchins, who love playing pranks, hiding in their secret treehouse and writing comic books. But when they accidentally bring their favorite comic book character, Captain Underpants, to life through a hypnosis accident involving their megalomaniacal principal Mr. Krupp (Helms), their elementary school life becomes anything but elementary.
Peele will voice George and Harold’s nerdy nemesis Melvin, while Kroll will voice the villain, Professor Poopypants.
I CAN'T WAIT.

- Getty Publications' Virtual Library. From the introductory blog post: "The books in the Virtual Library come from three of the Getty’s programs: the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. The over 250 offered here today—and the many more we will continue to add into the future—represent a significant portion of our publishing list. Still, they are just a modest part of what is becoming an important, informally networked library, spread across multiple institutions and spanning thousands of years of art historical knowledge."
- Wellcome Images. From the introductory blog post: "The [over 100,000] images can be downloaded in high-resolution directly from the Wellcome Images website for users to freely copy, distribute, edit, manipulate, and build upon as you wish, for personal or commercial use. The images range from ancient medical manuscripts to etchings by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Francisco Goya."
From Deadline:
Emerald City is described as a modern and dark reimagining of the classic tale of Oz in the vein of Game Of Thrones, drawing upon stories from Baum’s original 14 books that include lethal warriors, competing kingdoms, and the infamous wizard as we’ve never seen him before. A head-strong 20-year-old Dorothy Gale is unwittingly sent on an eye-opening journey that thrusts her into the center of an epic and bloody battle for the control of Oz.
I kind of already want to skip it.
AM I THE CRABBIEST CRAB WHO EVER CRABBED?
Probably.
But, fair or not, the EDGY OZ description immediately made me think of this, which ewww.
I may have posted this link before, but it's a good one, so I don't mind repeating myself.
From the collection description:
What if the #savelibraries campaign had taken place between 1914-18? Then I expanded that out to World War 2 posters as well.
These are my two favorites, but there are loads more at flickr!

...that they're already working on the sequel:
At the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena on Thursday, Lifetime announced its developing author V.C. Andrew’s second novel in the incest-peppered Dollanganger series, Petals on the Wind. Screenwriter Kayla Alpert describes the sequel as taking place 10 years after the first film, “and I’ll just say its a very juicy and compelling revenge drama.”
"Incest-peppered." AHAHAHAHAHA.
Man, I need to find a friend who gets Lifetime.
LET'S WATCH THAT TRAILER AGAIN, SHALL WE??
Two of the Vampire Diaries books are $1.99 today.
As I've gotten somewhat hooked on the show, I'm curious about the books: are they worth it? Or is this one of those rare Dexter-like cases in which the adaptation is stronger than the original?
Relatedly:
Josh's new favorite game involves making Damon's Bug-Eyed Crazy Eyebrow Serious Face at me while asking completely non-Damon-y questions.
Like, standing at the deli counter at the grocery store:
Josh: Honey?
Me: Yeah?
Josh: Do you want to get some... *suddenly spins around and looms over me while making ↑ that face* ...BABY SWISS?
Me: *falls over laughing*
Lady at the deli counter: I hate my job.
Anyway, so yeah. The books? Are they worth my time?
Awesome.

From the BBC:
Classic video games from the 1970s and 1980s have been put online by the Internet Archive and can be played within a web browser for nothing.
The collection has launched with games from five early home consoles, including the Atari 2600 and Colecovision.
The games do not have sound, but will soon, the Internet Archive said.
"In coming months, the playable software collection will expand greatly," archivist Jason Scott wrote.
"Making these vintage games available to the world, instantly, allows for commentary, education, enjoyment and memory for the history they are a part of."
I SWOON.
Theo James, rowr. (<--I've had a soft spot for him since that ridiculous Bedlam show.)
