5. 61 Things You Should Know About Hoboes

www.buzzfeed.com/.../things-i-learned-at-the-national-hobo-co...

One of my children ( I won't say which one out of respect for their privacy) recently lost a
career-type job due to the economic 'recession'. His job loss made him turn to a job he's had
over the years as a bartender at a really popular restaurant and where he has become,
over the seven  years he's been there, an important part of the personality of the place.
Educated, and experienced now in business, he came back shamefaced that he couldn't make
a go of it in the insurance field.

"Nobody works harder," I told him. "It's not your failing that people can't afford to buy alot of

insurance. We saw a documentary the other night about people who were ordinary Americans
before this depression (I think they're fudging by not saying so.) who now live in woods and
gather around campfires..."

"Like the '30's," my son finished my thought.

Then yesterday, Mother's Day, my husband and I went to the local theatre and saw Matthew

Maconaghey in his latest film, "Mud".  Something along the lines of "Winter's Bones", which is
an award-winning film with Jennifer Lawrence from two years ago, this featured Matt Maconaghey
in the role of an underdog rover by the name of Mud. What a name! He tells two boys who find him
along the river where he's hiding from the law, "I'm not a bum, I'm a hobo. I'm willing to work!"
Excellent movie! Go see it!

However, my point is, it seems hoboes are becoming fashionable once again. I spotted an older

post from BUZZ FEED tonight by staff member Matt Stopera and the link to it is at the top of
the page, under the Jimmie Rodgers You Tube video. Titled, "Things I Learned at the National Hobo
Convention", it is one of the best feature stories I've read in a long time. Matt Stopera is respectful in his
open appreciation of the Hoboes he stays with in Britt, Iowa last summer for their annual convention.
I hope you enjoy it.

Click the link and go to the story now.

6. St. Joseph's Day Today!

My writing seems to gravitate to discussions about saints lately….St. Valentine, St. Patrick, St. Joseph today…and we’ll get to St. Francis soon because the Franciscans play a major role in my book, Angel’s Requiem. Not to mention our new Pope took the name ‘Francis’ in his honor.
A quick note about St. Joseph’s Day. Yes, today, March 19, is the saint’s feast day on the Catholic calendar. Again, the cardinals in Rome have elected a Pope, this time from South America, but, still, Pope Francis is Italian by ethnicity. St. Joseph the Worker (as Italians call Jesus’ father) is a very popular saint among Italians. Could it be the reason Pope Francis chose his feast day to be installed as Pope? If so, that is certainly consistent with his love of the little man.
St. Joseph is regarded as a very powerful intercessor with Jesus. Believers credit him with providing employment and protecting the worker while he labors. Believers also trust him to protect them from the dangers of war, fire and poison. I’m sure he is enjoying more popularity than ever these days with the world as it is.
When I was a girl, Italians in our school took off from school for St. Joseph’s Day and had a traveling feast. Going from one neighbor or relative to another, they ate an ongoing selection of Old World foods that took days to prepare.  I’ve often given them credit for their national pride, especially after being bombarded by the enormous ethnic chest pounding by the Irish the whole previous week because March 17, two days earlier, is St. Patrick’s Day.

7. Happy St. Patrick's Day! A bit of Music, A Bit of Food and Drink and a Story to Tell You!

Sl'ainte  and Happy St. Patrick's Day to you! This past week, I bought the makings for the traditional St. Patrick's Day meal, corned beef and cabbage, at my favorite grocery store, Shop-Rite, part of a chain of stores here in New Jersey. The manager moved a cold case up to the store front where the customers couldn't miss it. Inside was P.J. O'Reilly's corned beef brisket with flavor packets, only $1.99 a pound. Next to the case, in a bin were heads of cabbage, only 7 cents a pound. (I later researched it best I could, and for the life of me, I can't find '7 cents' as a price for cabbage. Maybe in the 50's, who knows?) So, I winked with my finger side of my nose, threw some gold dust at the manager to divert him, and stocked my cart with my St. Patrick's Day items before he could come to his senses and raise the prices.
Talk about Irish hospitality! Or…..in Shop-Rite's case, Italian hospitality, because this huge chain of stores is owned by the Inserra family.  These savvy folks never miss a holiday, or national event. I remember 2998 when the stock market crashed, Shop-Rite lined up flats of tomato sauce and canned tomatoes, bins of spaghetti - again, at rock bottom prices. Their trademark Shop-Rite coffee, an excellent brand, was priced low and stayed very low for a few years afterward.
I bought  P.J. Reilly corned beef last year and followed a simple recipe for superb results. Below is this recipe for succulent, buttery corned beef:
Turn the oven to 325 degrees
Place  2 pound corned beef brisket in a baking pan and fill with twelve ounces of beer. Many recipes say to use Guinness Stout. You don't have to. I had Yuengling on hand. I'm a Coal Cracker, as I said in my Valentine's Day story about the Pennsylvania miners, and Coal Crackers' favorite beer is America's oldest, Yuengling. I used it last year and the beef was delectable.
I added the full packet of flavoring and covered the pan securely with tin foil.
Cook for two hours and then add potatoes and raw cabbage and carrots, and some onions. Cook for another hour. Slice and serve.

Now, you've had music, dancing and food and drink. Next, I have a story to tell you. My story excerpt is part of a work in progress, its working title is 'Wherever the Wind May Blow' and takes place in Ireland in the year 1814. Enjoy! If you want a notification when the full story is published, leave your name and email at my mail: [email protected].

The sky was a bit overcast but the air was calm as the Desmonds left their farm in Cloughereen.
It was harvest time and today was Fair Day in Killarney. This was one of the high points of life in rural Ireland back at the turn of the 19th century. Da took the entire family by wagon from Cloughereen to Killarney town. Matilda, their prodigious milking cow was tethered to the wagon. Mother’s raspberry pie was wrapped in good linen and placed in a wooden box for safekeeping at her feet. Granny held the beautiful quilt she and Mother had worked on these past months. Ailean didn’t know why, but Matilda, the quilt and the pie all held an extreme importance to her family in the competitions this year
Once at the fair, Da led Matilda over to the animal husbandry court.
“Look, there’s Virginia McGee,” Granny whispered to Mother. “Let’s enter our quilt and take a look at hers. It won’t compare, of course, but I’m curious.”
“Girls, stay together, and Ailean, stay with your friends while we enter our goods in the competition. Remember, stay on the main fairway.” As Ailean nodded, Mother and Granny left her with her little sister, Beatrice.
Beatrice walked alongside Ailean as they stopped at the vendors for sweets and trinkets and played a carnival game or two. She guided the eight year old to the teeter totters and swings and foot-propelled merry go round. While little Beatrice rode with the other little ones on the merry go round, Ailean craned her neck to look for friends she knew. And one new friend she wanted to know a bit more….Brennan McGee.
An old tinker biddy suddenly stood off to her side, coming as if out of nowhere and Ailean stepped back in surprise as the woman caught her attention.
Crooking her knobby long forefinger, the old granny tinker, dressed in filthy rags and a bonnet pulled forward down onto her forehead, leaving the rest of her face in the shadows, motioned Ailean over to her with the words, “Young miss, would you like to have your fortune told? Only tuppence.”
Ailean turned away from the old crone as if preparing to run from fire! How often had Mother and Grandma told her fortune tellers were bogus and inspired by the Devil? How often had the parish priest stood at his podium and condemned fortune telling, declaring it a very serious sin?
“Feed an old lady, miss. Tuppence will buy some bread and tea. Just a wee amount and it would be an act of kindness.” The old crone held out her palm in supplication.  Ailean felt sympathy for the poor old lady, whose clothes were in tatters. Whatever else might not be true, surely she is telling the truth when she says she is hungry! It can’t hurt to give her some money without hearing the fortune. With that, she placed tuppence in the woman’s palm and turned toward her friends.
As she walked away, she heard, “Two predictions I have for you, pretty miss, with my thanks! First, you will meet your true love today. That you already know, but again you don’t know. Second, a mighty wind blows our way. Does it promise ill or good— only you decide.” Ailean looked at the sky, the day’s sun poking through the overcast clouds in the midst of the calm, July day, typical for Killarney at this time of year. So much for fortune tellers.

“Say, Ailean, over here! Come have some cider.” It was Brennan McGee, the man she’d most hoped to see today.
“Beatrice, I’ll be just a minute. Stay where you are. I can see you and then we’ll get some lunch.” She didn’t have to go more than fifty feet to where he stood in a group of Killarney youths. He stood when she approached. At twenty-two years old, he was a full grown man, standing six feet tall.
He was broad-shouldered and had long, powerful legs and a broad chest that filled out his collarless white muslin shirt, open to the chest to reveal a powerful torso. His deep blue eyes were devilish and Ailean’s heart went thump-at-thump when she looked into them. Her heart stirred and warmth expanded across her chest.  He had arrived from America months ago and when she had seen him at the church with his aunt on his first Sunday in Killarney, she set out to get Brennan McGee.
“Luv, you look beautiful!” Though the two had never talked except for greeting each other, still, he spoke so familiarly, Ailean knew he felt as she did. He reached out his hand, and she extended hers. Before he held her delicate white hand, he briefly touched her arm, extending his long, thick fingers downward from her forearm to her hand, giving off such warmth and strength that Ailean was magnetically drawn into his embrace as he encircled her waist now and held her firmly. She blushed at the same time and looked around to make sure Da was nowhere in sight. Brennan would be done for if he was. No matter at all to Da if Brennan was the nephew of  Widow McGee and here from the States.
For a bit, Ailean and Brennan sat and chatted with the group of young people. Then, it came time for lunch.
Brennan whispered in her ear: “Let’s separate and take a stroll.” The pressure of his hand was very firm against her elbow. She couldn’t have said ‘no’ if she wanted to. Ailean had longed to hear such words since she had laid eyes on Brennan. Suddenly,  she knew he would be hers, now and forever.  She was sure he felt the same as she did.  Fleetingly, she thought, the old lady was right!
He held his hand very firmly around her waist, and drew her ever closer to him as we walked the lane at the fair, then just outside its periphery until they approached a series of town buildings, one of which had a narrow alleyway. She began to feel, just for a moment, a sense of alarm. She quickly stuffed that feeling down deep inside. That was a mistake, for it was her intuition telling her she was going too close to the fire.
“Come, my love,” Brennan whispered to her. “Come here into the alleyway. I have something to ask you.” Without speaking further, he took her hand and pulled it and her into the narrow passage. Pressing her against the wall of a brick building, he leaned in over her and his chest pushed against her breast, setting her heart to thump-at-thump-at-thump! His full lips first grazed hers teasingly, and then he set to kissing her in a circular motion and then he kissed her firmly until her breath stopped for a second as she thrilled to feel his mouth on hers.  She wrapped her arms around him tightly to draw him closer to her. Ta-thump-at-thump! At that, Brennan pressed his mouth harder and harder against hers, and at her back, his hands that had held hers in seeming affection, now clenched tight against the small of her back so that she was caged. Confused and light-headed, Ailean flailed wildly at her assailant. Still, he held her in his angry grasp. Now her heart beat like it would pound itself right out of her chest. A sudden burst of power surged through her, and in a flash, Ailean had pushed out against his arms with hers and she freed herself
“You mustn’t,” she cried as she choked in terror.
“Oh, no, you don’t.” His arm reached out and grabbed hers roughly, and pulled her back into the alleyway. “You are mine. I know you love me. I know you do. Since I first saw you, I made up my mind that you would be mine.” So spoke the man she thought, however briefly, would be the love of her life. He spoke to her roughly and harshly and with an air of authority she realized could mean he would enforce his desires any way he had to. She started to scream, but he put his big hand over her mouth. She kicked and pulled away with all her might, but his strong arms and hands held hard against her flesh, where before he had used them to try to seduce her in a most inviting manner.
Just then, as he was dragging her further and further down the alleyway, she heard little Beatrice. “Ailean, Ailean, where are you? We have to find Mother and Da. I’m hungry. Where are you?”
She bit Brennan’s hand. He drew back with a venomous look on his face. “You!” and he back-handedly slapped her. She fell against the iron railing leading to some steps to a basement of an establishment. His leg got caught in the spokes of the railing. Still, Brennan kept dragging her. He let go of her mouth because he needed his hands to pull her harder and harder. Involuntarily, now, she let out a scream of agony.
“Help! Help me!” Ailean sank after the effort.
Beatrice appeared at her side. “You awful man, you. I’m going to tell your aunt what you’re doing. You’re hurting Ailean!” And with that, Beatrice started to whoop and holler and set up such a racket, it would  wake the dead. By that time, the local musical band from O’Halleran’s  had set up to play in the Town Square, and the strains of an Irish reel drowned out her pleas. Mobilized to protect her little sister, Ailean  got to her feet, and struggled free of the railing. She grabbed Beatrice’s hand and fled.
Gasping from his efforts, Brennan just shouted after her, “Later, my love. You and I aren’t finished yet.”
As Ailean and Beatrice struggled toward the square, a sudden wind blew in, blowing the tablecloths from the fair tables.  The grass bent to the ground blade by blade, a sudden rain drenching the town for a few moments, in time with the wind. The sky above darkened as if to warn of a hurricane, and everybody ran for cover. Five minutes later, it all disappeared. Silence. As if it had never happened. Ailean and Beatrice came out from under the awning of the clothier.

I'm alllll....out of Putty Tats. Send over another Putty Tat!... Tweety Bird

Sequestration: the action of taking possession of assets until a debt has been paid,or other action taken.
Synonym: seizure.

That is one definition of the word that we hear fifty times a day now in reference to cutting some fat off the huge national budget. Seems a bit radical a term for budget trimming, but there are many other big words out there ending in 'ion' and I've listed a very few below. I don't know about the rest of you, but I get a bit weary from all the fighting and bickering on Capitol Hill. Then I remember that I'm just a Tweety Bird and that the Cat is always out there and I laugh! So true! The Cat is a challenge to all of us, whatever form it takes each day. Like Tweety, sometimes the Cat wins........but other times we win. Hope you'll enjoy the Tweety/Sylvester cartoon!

10. Whatever Happened To The Missing Relics Belonging To St. Valentine?

Send Along Your Email Address to Receive a Free Copy of 'Angel's Requiem'- Special for Valentine's Day

The premise of my book entitled "Angel's Requiem", a mystery thriller is about a legendary Italian family that suffers a curse related to St. Mark's body, which went missing sometime after its transport to Venice, Italy in the 9th century. The drama unfolds in modern day New York City and has a love story to boot. I am offering to send a coupon for a free download of 'Angel's' to any lovers of mystery. All you have to do is leave a comment below and send along your email address to [email protected]. See the story of St. Valentine, himself, and the brief overview of his relics to see what prompted my giveaway.

The Overview of St. Valentine's Story
February is Valentines Day Month. February 14 is the official national day of celebration of love. The name, though, 'Valentine', has its origin in the early Christian Church, around A.D. 269, the year a bishop was said to have been beaten and beheaded for marrying Roman troops to their beloveds in spite of military rules against marriage for soldiers of Claudius II. At a time of severe persecution by Rome against Christians, his bodily remains were gathered quietly by early Christians and buried beneath the Via Flamina in Rome. The flower crowned skull of St. Valentine is exhibited now in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome and held in a place of honor. Sources vary-relics of a St. Valentine were exhumed from an old catacombs, There are relics belonging to St. Valentine, given as a gift to the Irish people by Pope Gregory XVI in 1835 , and exhibited in Whitefriar Church in Dublin today. But, there was a period of time when the relic went missing for a bit. It was eventually found in storage at the church site and so was put on display once again after a Church renovation had caused some confusion about its whereabouts.

I went to the CBS Denver online news site, following a discussion on a forum about the corrupt nature of the Denver Police Department. Sure, I found the story of police brutality I was looking for. However, a newstream video played this inspriational video that put a catch in my throat, to say the least. Watch and see:

12. THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF SONG: THE MUSIC OF HAROLD ARLEN

Playing Off Broadway at St. Luke’s Theatre, 308 W. 46th Street, New York City

I was fortunate to attend a musical revue of songs written by composer Harold Arlen (1905-1986, b. Buffalo, New York) last night.  The temperature was a frigid 19 degrees, and the crowd was rather sparse on Martin Luther King Day/Inauguration Day. Still, I was thrilled to attend.

We were there to hear songs by the composer who wrote Over the Rainbow, named the number one song of the 20th Century by The Recording Industry of America. Our American troops claimed it as their song during WWII.

However, the name Harold Arlen.  Hmmm. Surely I had heard of him. No, not that I could recall.

Yet, I must have heard his music because my husband winds up our You Tube ‘Victrola’ every Sunday night so we can listen to America’s greatest singers sing America’s greatest musical compositions. So, I thought, Here goes. Let’s get some culture.

And the show’s stars, three young men calling themselves The Three Crooners, performed one of my Sunday night favorites: Minnie the Moocher’s Wedding Song,  orchestra leader Cab Calloway’s Cotton Club signature song.

While The Three Crooners give pretty good renditions of Arlen hits like One for My Baby (And One More for the Road), This Time The Dreams On Me, Paper Moon, World On A String, Get Happy, The Gal That Got Away, and The Oz Medleyof tunes, complete with Arlen’s home movies of the Oz production set playing behind them, it was Black soloist Antoinette Henry who stole the show when she sang other great songs by Harold Arlen such as Stormy Weather, Blues in the Night, Come Rain or Come Shine, That Old Black Magic and, of course, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. She has a powerful rich voice that has played in regional theatre in roles such as Muzzy Von Hossemere in Thoroughly Modern Millie

My cup runneth over as we got caught up in the stage revue of songs by a prolific composer named Harold Arlen, who wrote many of my most whistle-able and nostalgic tunes. So this was Harold Arlen! I never knew before last evening. All these years I’ve listened to these songs during our Sunday nights spent You Tubing, but, of course, nothing compares to a live performance, even if The Three Crooners and Miss Henry are not known, as of yet, as the ‘greatest American singers’. Still, they were more than able to serve the songs they sang. To the Crooners, I’d say, though, that if they want to further promote themselves, it would be good to add another crooner or two - say, a baritone, and a counter tenor, to the three tenor voices they share.

The NYC debut of The Wizard of Songfollows an eighteen city tour with a month long appearance in Las Vegas.

Great Show!

14. IN THE NEWS: VIOLENCE AND DEATH AT SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Sandy Hook Elementary School, Friday, December 14

What is thought to be a single gunmen arrived at the elementary school and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle and killed twenty children and seven adults.

It made me think about my childhood in my section of the city, which was relatively crime-free, even for the 50's and 60's. It was safe to live there. What I remembered was this: all the schools in the neighborhood were locked all day, every day. Once the bell sounded and we filed into the school, the door tenders (boys who also served on safety patrol) closed the doors, which automatically locked from the inside. Of course, the pupils could open the door if they had to leave, outsiders just couldn't enter without permission.

This is the way it was at every school, whether public or private, in my neighborhood. We were used to it. It didn't crimp anybody's style. With today's intercom systems and with massive cell phone use, the occasional parent or delivery person can call ahead and have an attendant open the door for them if it's appropriate. It's even less restrictive than it once was for the parent who had to call the principal's office at day's beginning to schedule an entrance.

Do all of you lock your doors at home? I do. Almost one-hundred per cent of the time. Why on this earth would we leave the doors open at our schools, where our youngest and most vulnerable citizens, our most precious people, work and play?

I expect that tomorrow, Monday, every school across the country will have their doors locked. Quietly. Without fanfare. Without making an issue of it. Makes sense to me.

15. NINE'S BOOK REVIEWS: RJ PALMER'S "SINS OF THE FATHER" 99 CENTS!!

A 99 CENTS READ FOR ALL HALLOW'S EVE

"Sins of the Father" will:
Scare  the  pants  off  you!
Scare the daylights out of you!
Raise the hair on your neck.
And  mainly, It will:
Scare the hell out of you and scare some sense into you.

Cause Evil is real!!  And Ms. Palmer will show us just how real!

Something is happening to Aaron, the Midwestern pastor who suffers waning faith in God. He experiences physical pain with evidence of his being tortured, caused by an unknown source. He can't tell anyone and doesn't know what to do. Then he meets Lucian and experiences all the mental pain and tortures that were inflicted on the little boy. He realizes that the little boy and Aaron's own previous occult suffering, are connected. He becomes committed to saving the boy!

The ultimate evil lives inside little Lucian, the autistic boy who has no know history.

I liked her book very much. Strong opening and closings. Intriguing story development  between  the two. In fact, Ms. Palmer's opening chapter just won author Cheryl Bradshaw's September award for Best First Chapter. Well deserved, too, if I do say so myself. In fact, after I just started the book, I read the first chapter and immediately started talking about it to everyone in my family.

This is classic horror genre writing, with many riveting scenes. The opening is touching and deeply disturbing. Next, the two characters, Lucian and Aaron, are drawn together by the vagabond, Philip Moran, who suffers mental illness and had to 'rest' a bit at the local mental hospital. It was Philip who  asked  Pastor Aaron to come visit an autistic child named Lucian. Aaron, a naturally compassionate man, feels drawn to help Lucian and visits him a couple of days a week.

Ms. Palmer starts each of Lucian's chapters with a description of the interior of Lucian's mind as he relates to Aaron in the manner an autistic child might. Aaron produces some feelings of safety and so Lucian is attaching himself to Aaron. That, and his liking of Aaron's 'purple' eyes, like his own. It is the seed of salvation growing in Lucian, and nurtured by Aaron's attentiveness to his needs, that hint at personal development in this child, who suffers in a way that is horrifying for the reader to contemplate.

Meanwhile, devastating  fires break out in the city.  One such fire happens at the mental hospital where Lucian stays and he escapes the fire and Aaron finds him and brings him to live with him because the state was going to send him away where Aaron could not easily see him.

Once the two live together, the magnitude of Lucian's suffering from cold, darkness and fire become painfully obvious to Aaron, who can feel the little boy's pain and torture in a literal sense. What Lucian suffers, Aaron does, too. Helped by two female characters, Lena and her mother, Nancy, Aaron cares for Lucian's physical needs as well as seeking to unravel the mystery of the scenes from Lucian's life, which include servitude in a medieval monastery and torture by whipping at the hands of perverted and malicious monks.

No spoilers here. However, the resolution of this often hair-raising tale (perfect for Halloween, by the way!) will scare you onto the straight and narrow…..IF you haven't already found your way!

17. BOOK REVIEWER/PUBLISHER ALBERT ROBBINS III/ THE RUPERT MURDOCH OF INDIE PUBLISHING!!!

 ......http://freebookreviews.blogspot.com/p/free-book-reviews-nation-forum.html.......

greatindiereads.blogspot.com.......

  .................... freebookreviews.blogspot.com.................................

As promised, I sent along a questionnaire to Albert Robbins III, and he responded promptly with answers. Albert is the owner/operator of three book blogs. He was most kind (and very insightful, I might add!) in giving me a great review for "Angel's Requiem" a year ago and then he followed that up in January, 2012 by naming it to his top 25 books for the year!!! I  log into his site to reread his very supportive review of 'Angel's' when I most need a lift as I slog through this very unstable world of self-publishing where a writer has to enjoy and relish the act of writing and keep reminding herself that 'a bird doesn't sing to be heard. It sings because it can.' It often feels like that saying IS for the birds!! The time has come to frame a copy of both his review and the List of 25 Top-Rated Books for 2011. Without adding anything further except that Albert vehemently denies he is the Rupert Murdoch of Indie Publishing.......H..E..E...R..E'S ALBERT ROBBINS III:

KK:  Albert: Reason for founding.

AR:  The first blog I started was Free Book Reviews. I started this blog because as I was trying to promote my wife’s (RJ Palmer) book “Birthright”, I saw a lack of outlets for “Indie Authors” to really get their work out there for free. Therefore, I figured that I could help her promote her work, if I help the “Indie Author” community promote their work. Sounds like a good idea, even if it was a bit self-serving at the time. Then as the months went by my involvement in the “Indie Author” community became larger than a mere wanting to promote my wife and became about helping readers find and connect with authors they were told were not good enough. I then started Great Indie Reads so that authors did not have to wait for a review in order to promote their work. I started The Nation Forum for the same reason. In the time since starting these blogs and forum I have had millions of visits and have read hundreds of books and have never looked back. These sites will continue to grow as my experience in promoting RJ Palmer and her books, “Birthright” and “Sins of the Father” expose me to a greater amount of resources in which to share with the masses.

KK:  Briefly describe the evolution from one site to another.

AR:  Free Book Reviews is for Book Reviews, Book Excerpts, Guest Posts, Blog Tours and Author Interviews. I also occasionally post news or tidbits about other things that interest me either in the writing world or on a personal level.

Great Indie Reads is strictly a place for books to be presented to the masses. With links to purchase and a description of the material.

The Nation Forum is just that. A place for readers and author to connect. Anyone can join in and anyone can post whatever they want.

I believe that together these three offer authors a chance to “get out there” and readers a chance to find the one book that they NEED to read.

KK:  Do you have a career other than publishing your blogs?

AR:  At this point in time I run my own Computer Repair Business (S7 Computer Solutions).

KK:  Would you share with the reader any interesting, rewarding, moments?  Any epiphanies?

AR:  Within my first year of reviewing I had an author call me a lazy reviewer. (On a five star review) However, anytime and every time I have an author tell me how much they appreciated my review of their work it makes me feel all warm an fuzzy. When I get messages from readers that tell me how I helped them decide to buy a book I feel proud. These are the moments that make it worth it.

KK:  Anything else you are inclined to share:

AR:  Also while you are at it hop over to my blogs or other links and give me a shout. Be on the lookout for Free Book Reviews best of 2012.

I also have to take this chance to say that I would love it if you would buy my wife’s books “Birthright” : http://www.amazon.com/Birthright-ebook/dp/B0040GJGQO/ref=sr_1_8?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1348945232&sr=1-8&keywords=birthright and below:

“Sins of the Father” : http://www.amazon.com/Sins-of-the-Father-ebook/dp/B007Z4WUWU/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1348945280&sr=1-2&keywords=sins+of+the+father

They really are good tales and I am sure you would enjoy them.
Attention readers! Pick up a copy of any of Kate Kindle’s books, you eill not be disappointed.

KK:  Thanks for the plug, Albert. As for RJ Palmer,  I already have picked up copies of her books and will leave comments/reviews and post them on my blog as well. It has been a pleasure having you here. Much good fortune.

18. Angel's Requiem Number 7 on Top-rated Books at FREE BOOK REVIEWS for 2011!!!

"What You Don't Know Won't Hurt You!!

But, That Doesn't Apply to Good News!!

How sweet it is! Albert Robbins II, book reviewer, owner and operator of FREE BOOK REVIEWS and a couple of other blogs related to each other, has been promoting Indie Author books for a couple of years now.

While I subscribe to GREAT INDIE READS, one of them, it seems to have morphed into two others, which land in my mailbox one to three times weekly with really mindful reviews as well as advice, advertising, and publishing tips.

I missed the January 17, 2012 blog which named Angel's Requiem Number 7 out of 25 top-rated and reviewed books on his site. That's out of 218 blog reviews!!!!! I certainly would have been trumpeting that news to the public had I known. However, now I know and now so do you!! I have put a feeler out to Albert to see if he'll come do a post on my blog.

Mark Twain's character, Tom Sawyer, gets a boy to do his job of whitewashing the fence...Google Doodle November 30, 2011

Just go to Smashwords.com/books/view/12422 and pick your eReader style and click 'download'. That's all their is to it.

When the window opens to choose date of publication, you'll notice Angel's has had a number of publication dates. At Smashwords, each change or publishing tweak an author gives her book is recorded as a date. This was a first book and I made many changes as I learned the process of self- publishing from the ground up. I'm still learning and I'm not afraid to say so. The fact is, I finally hired a highly skilled proofreader and editor who did a perfect job of presenting my work in its present form. I'm proud of my completed book.

It reminds me, though, of Mark Twain, who wrote professionally all his life. His manuscript for " The Adventures of Huck Finn" was written in part during his year of living in Buffalo, New York right after his marriage to his wife, Olivia. They suffered through illness and death of her father and their firstborn son as well as Livy's typhoid sickness. The year was traumatic and they were glad to move away. A partial manuscript of 'Huck Finn' used to be on display in the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. In Twain's own hand, the manuscript has many, many corrections, crossouts and insertion of new words. The finished product became an American masterpiece. Why? Well, this isn't just convenient thinking. I believe it was because Twain wouldn't settle for less than his concept of 'perfect' for his work. He stopped correcting his work when he felt he had done his best. See below a copy of a manuscript he worked on entitled 'A Family Sketch'.

See what I mean? He wrote. He rewrote. Then he edited. That's what I was doing on Smashwords when publishing my first book, Angel's Requiem.  Why? Because it was my goal, and I believe I succeeded in it, to offer the reader my best possible work. And so far, all the reviews have been very good. I hope you enjoy it.

25. TRIP TO AMISH COUNTRY IN LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA

The best trips are often those my husband and I take on a whim. Thursday of last week, I decided to go to Hershey, Pennsylvania and then on to nearby Lancaster, home of many Amish folks. It worked out to be alot of fun, tremendously relaxing among acres of well-tended, fertile farmland in the hills of  Pennsylvania.  We were there thirty-five years ago when our children were very young and the family had a wholesome, memorable vacation. Something about the Amish, with their horsedrawn buggies and traditional, simple clothes and their famous shoo-fly pie. With their luscious Dutch cooking at many diners around the Lancaster area. We left stuffed and happy.

It was a pleasure sitting on Adirondack wooden benches Sunday morning near the pool at our motel. We sipped coffee from the Continental Breakfast and pretended to read so we could glimpse the Amish in their buggies as their horses cantered by, carrying families to one of the local Mennonite churches. 'Clickety-clop' went the heavy hooves on the asphalt road-a sound that offered comfort to the ear much like that of summer rain falling on a roof.

They are polite people and will nod in the general direction of those of us they call 'The English', meaning the non-Amish.  However, it never goes beyond minimal civility. They are a group apart, living
a lifestyle from 300 years ago. (http://www.padutchcountry.com/towns-and-heritage/amish-country/amish-lifestyle.asp) Yet, their farms are scrupulously tended and decorated. This could well be due to their community support system whereby all help each other. Theirs is a testament to their Christianity through their habit of living according to their beliefs in a quiet manner. And, yes, everyone who sees them IS watching. Very nice weekend!
