In the shadow of the Segrada Familia, Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece in the heart of Barcelona. Towering cranes still hover over this life's work, like guardian angels. Busloads of gabby tourists disembark from the hop-on, hop-off buses to view the sandy colored cathedral, while Barcelona natives hang banner outside their apartment windows imploring quiet.
Yet, Barcelona buzzes with the sounds of motorcycles, day and night.
So, Paris.
A city swimming in cafe's.
Thought there would be only a few Starbucks, not as many as....
almost 40?
This one, in the 1st arrondisement, not far from Notre-Dame, was full.
Nope, didn't partake.
What would Hemingway say?
Cathi R. sent this along.
Seeing red here
China red
And gold
Flags and lanterns in the largest city in the world,
Its long history of shipping and trading.
Coffee is the new tea.
Love this bluesh photo Carolyn sent me from Victoria, British Columbia.
From a passing car?
Let's imagine.
It was a blue moon over picturesque Victoria, a little bit of England in North America.
And three stars above.
Just another day.
The little girl on the right is playing chess with her dad.
White Shirt Guy on the left is intense on his laptop.
And if you look closely, the word "Rethink"
running across White Shirt Guy, backwards.
Got to be a metaphor in that somehow, right?
Or not.
A big chunk of Pearl Street is a pedestrian walkway, and there are no cars, but you might bump into an elk (?) moose (?) on your way to Starbucks...
Or a Buff fan, a cyclist, rock climber, power walker, marathoner or other sport enthusiast. Boulder's high altitude and Flat Iron mountain is picture perfect for those who want/need to seriously train.
Not an ounce of fat to be found in this lean, clean city.
Couldn't resist.
What a Starbucks might have looked like in the 50's, 60's?
Love Instagrams.
Now, just Polaroid needs reinvention for us photo nerds.
Beverly Blvd and Robertson, congested, construction, photo red light cameras, you name it - this mid-city intersection's got it.
BUT.....this is L.A.'s interior design mecca, high-end Italian and French furniture design stores to drool and dream over....
Speaking of interior design...
Looking for an eco-friendly, cost saving, use-what-you-have, lose-what-you-don't-need approach to home design?

New, wonderful, Middle Grade book by Jackie Hirtz and Marcy Winograd:
"Eleven-year-old Lola Zola panics when her parents announce, “We were laid-off.”
“Fired?”
“Not fired, Lola, laid-off—from the auto plant.”
Either way, it’s bad news.
How will Lola rescue her parents and tail-less cat Bowzer from the jobless blues?"
Sadly, sooooo relevant in these hard times of layoffs and economic uncertainty. Available on Amazon.com
The new world trade center and footprint memorials, in the distance, rising.
Normalcy?
What can be more normal than a cup of coffee,
Even here.
Look closely at the original mermaid.....
quite a different look.
:-)
San Telmo, Buenos Aires.
What would i do without world traveler, Cathi R., who shoots pics for me?
I like the ornate balcony and shuttered window above, an open door, below, but no line.
Not one person in sight.
A sleepy street.
A blue sky peeking out behind wispy clouds to match the blue arrow, pointing,
To where?
Kind of early morning, dreamy.
There's a crazy tango waiting to be danced,
hours away.
This is so newsworthy.
Not.
Nothing like a dashboard view of the world.
After all, we Angelinos spend a lot of time in our cars.
Don't you love it when the sign says "ONLY"
So definitive.
So authoritative.
This Starbucks, at the intersection of Sherman Way and Whitsett, is in the wilderness of home improvement and contractor warehouse heaven, and a bunch of marble/tile stores added in for good measure.
It's got an interesting, artsy facade, though, but ONLY if you're looking carefully.
Look closely and you'll see three laptops, and their owners, seriously mesmerized, hunched over them.
The Macs have taken over!!!
Except for the guy in the foreground.
He's focused only on me.
For now.
Me, I'm not a skier.
But for those who are, a first of its kind -- a Ski-Thru Starbucks.
Toss those mittens away, snow bunnies, no need, when you can warm up those frozen fingers with a hot cup of java. Right?
But, can you maneuver your skis while holding your cup?
Will there be spilt coffee on white snow?
A coffee trail?
Me, I'm still feeling Brrrrr.
Tea for Two.
Cup touching cup.
Love doubled.
Not quite a Hallmark card, but who wants that anyway?
Happy Valentines Day to all.
No need for words.
The metaphor is in the photo.
He's rushing. Rushing across the street. In full backpack regalia.
Quick. To Starbucks?
Inside, it's so steamy that all the windows are fogged up.
This is Noho, AKA North Hollywood, on the road to gentrification at the corner of Vineland Ave and Magnolia.
Here, you'll be surrounded by upcoming actors and dancers. Millennium Studio is nearby, so too the Academy of Television.
So, breathe it in, you can smell it in the air.
It's Hollywood, baby. Hollywood dreams.
It's a dog-day-afternoon at a King City Starbucks.
The City of King is situated on Highway 101 in South Monterey County in the heart of the California's Salinas Valley.Agriculture is king in this city and surrounding areas. But this pooch is king of the patio. Most of the other stores are empty in this round-type strip mall, "For Lease" signs everywhere you look. :-(
What would John Steinbeck say if he could see this today?
I'm hoping he'd write another book.

January 24, 2012 Starbucks customers are about to get a different kind of buzz.Already a go-to for morning commuters and afternoon pick-me-ups, the coffee giant is going after a happy hour crowd by offering wine and beer at select Southern California locations.
Starbucks said it would bring alcoholic beverages to four to six new or remodeled stores...The introduction of beer and wine was met with skepticism by some customers at a downtown
Starbucks on Monday afternoon. "If I wanted a beer, I'd go to a bar.".......
By Tiffany Hsu and Matt Stevens, Los Angeles Times"
REALLY?
C'mon.
Not a good move!

Just a not-too-distant walk from Royce Hall, or the student union, or Pauley Pavilion. Here's where Bruins find a little caffeine before/after/during classes. And at night, sometimes star-studded premieres at the Fox or Bruin theaters, a couple of the last one-screen movie theaters around. Ms. Long-Pony-Tail is about to have company at her window perch. Did he, Guy-in-Purple-Shirt, talk to her? Maybe ask her out? I'll never tell.....
