“The Little Lutheran” Magazine was kind enough to give me a story that is now running on its current issue – September 2011.
So here’s a little story. Because, I HAVE to tell you a story and you know that. A couple of weeks ago on my bedtime routine, I checked my stats – like everyone does, of course. I saw some people coming from The Little Lutheran’s site. Uhm. Click. Surprise! I made the cover! “Look! Look! Chris! Looooook!” “Cool” My husband is so immune to my overdoses of excitement by now and that is a good thing.
So yep. Exciting. I got my copies last week and here are some picks so I can share. My first magazine cover eveeeer!
Nothing is as exciting as having a copy in your hands of a book that you wrote or illustrated. That time has finally arrived for “The Messy One”. The book is part of the “Little Boost” Series written by Christianne Jones, published by Picture Window Books/Capstone Publishers and illustrated by yours truly. And I have to tell you, I couldn’t be any happier. The book looks INCREDIBLE! And to celebrate such niceness, I’m giving away a copy. Woop! Woop! or to say it better: Oink! Oink!
The Main Character
A year ago, I received a manuscript by email. I liked it immediately. Vivienne was the main character and she was fun, full of energy and messy. The next day they told me, she could be any animal that I wanted. Oh, the possibilities! I saw Vivienne morph from a cute little fox to an artsy cat to later become a hairy javelina. Kind of like an inverted caterpillar to butterfly evolution but oh, I loved that javelina! She had an attitude and hair to donate to the masses.
The Editor and Art Director liked the javelina as well and requested two changes: loose the tusks and hair. And as you can imagine, we ended up with a piggy.
The Technique
Capstone liked the colors from my colored pencil pieces and the textures from my mixed media work so I ended up mixing both techniques for the book. Final results were illustrations done with colored pencils and acrylics over different textured backgrounds with some collage elements on Canson Bristol Vellum 100mg.
Some illustrations had textured backgrounds that covered the whole piece while others only had texture as accents – like you can see below where I only added texture to the grass.
The best example of the collage elements I used in the book is Vivienne’s cute denim dress. It was done with real denim – my denim shorts. In the picture below you can see the title page and endpapers and it shows how I used the fabric in the book.
The Illustrations

The Book
I can’t wait for all of you to see the book but in the meantime a few images of the interior pages of

June normally means Summer camps, 100+ degree weather and the beginning of personal pieces in preparation to SCBWI’s Los Angeles Conference. This year it meant: “Poppy’s Best Day Ever” – A Picture-book in 30 Days Challenge. From signed contract to delivered artwork in 1 month (DVD coming soon).
And I know what you are thinking: Why did you do THAT? Two reasons: 1) story was about birds and 2) it was for Nestle Latino™. What a great opportunity! Still, why did you do that? Well, at the beginning the project was for 6 illustrations so it sounded doable. OK, then. Did you make the deadline? Yep. Was it difficult? Yep. Would you do it again? NO. And I warn you, don’t even try to convince me to take a deadline like that again. I will hurt you!
So I survived that June of bad meals, long hours and endless cursing to the lack of clones available for purchase. Now I got my copies in hand and get to blog about it. So get comfy and here we go!
The book is about a little bird, her birthday and her birthday wish. It is printed in both English and Spanish. Copies are handed for free during Nestle Latino™ events in California, Texas, New York and Florida.
Now a little bit of how I work. First I sketch my characters and then move on to a color version of at least my main character. This is the first Poppy I painted for the book. Later the beak got longer and curved upwards. A good improvement.
I normally sketch to size on paper and take care of revisions on tracing paper. I scan the revisions and add to the initial sketch in Photoshop. Some spreads are sketched and done with no revisions. Others take many, many revisions. A matter of tweaking as needed and requested.
When I’m working, I like hanging the character studies and sketch I’m working on right in front of me. A good reminder of were I need to get. As I’m done with each illustration, I hang them and look at them over and over again – for reference and looking for changes. I always have changes. With this book, the time was really limited per illustration but I still made changes until it was time to ship them.
It’s Monday again and here I bring you this week’s delivery: “Morning!”
Can you believe that next week is the last delivery of the Summer? I hope you and your children are enjoying the coloring pages. And I leave you all for now. I’m working on a picturebook and the deadline is getting dangerously close.
Until next Monday!
