51. Ruth & Naomi Made the Cover!

“The Little Lutheran” Magazine was kind enough to give me a story that is now running on its current issue – September 2011.

So here’s a little story. Because, I HAVE to tell you a story and you know that. A couple of weeks ago on my bedtime routine, I checked my stats – like everyone does, of course. I saw some people coming from The Little Lutheran’s site. Uhm. Click. Surprise! I made the cover! “Look! Look! Chris! Looooook!” “Cool” My husband is so immune to my overdoses of excitement by now and that is a good thing.

So yep. Exciting. I got my copies last week and here are some picks so I can share. My first magazine cover eveeeer!

52. “The Messy One” Giveaway

Nothing is as exciting as having a copy in your hands of a book that you wrote or illustrated. That time has finally arrived for “The Messy One”. The book is part of the “Little Boost” Series written by Christianne Jones, published by Picture Window Books/Capstone Publishers and illustrated by yours truly. And I have to tell you, I couldn’t be any happier. The book looks INCREDIBLE! And to celebrate such niceness, I’m giving away a copy. Woop! Woop! or to say it better: Oink! Oink!

The Main Character

A year ago, I received a manuscript by email. I liked it immediately. Vivienne was the main character and she was fun, full of energy and messy. The next day they told me, she could be any animal that I wanted. Oh, the possibilities! I saw Vivienne morph from a cute little fox to an artsy cat to later become a hairy javelina. Kind of like an inverted caterpillar to butterfly evolution but oh, I loved that javelina! She had an attitude and hair to donate to the masses.

The Editor and Art Director liked the javelina as well and requested two changes: loose the tusks and hair. And as you can imagine, we ended up with a piggy.

Final Vivienne

The Technique

Capstone liked the colors from my colored pencil pieces and the textures from my mixed media work so I ended up mixing both techniques for the book. Final results were illustrations done with colored pencils and acrylics over different textured backgrounds with some collage elements on Canson Bristol Vellum 100mg.

Some illustrations had textured backgrounds that covered the whole piece while others only had texture as accents – like you can see below where I only added texture to the grass.

Vivienne spread with textured accents on background

The best example of the collage elements I used in the book is Vivienne’s cute denim dress. It was done with real denim – my denim shorts. In the picture below you can see the title page and endpapers and it shows how I used the fabric in the book.

Denim used throughout the book for Vivienne's dress

The Illustrations

A few of the illustrations that are included in the book.

I Can Do It!

Oh, where would it be?

Bikers and Unicorns

The Book

I can’t wait for all of you to see the book but in the meantime a few images of the interior pages of 11 Comments on “The Messy One” Giveaway, last added: 9/20/2011

54. “Poppy’s Best Day Ever” – The Post

June normally means Summer camps, 100+ degree weather and the beginning of personal pieces in preparation to SCBWI’s Los Angeles Conference. This year it meant: “Poppy’s Best Day Ever” – A Picture-book in 30 Days Challenge. From signed contract to delivered artwork in 1 month (DVD coming soon).

And I know what you are thinking: Why did you do THAT? Two reasons: 1) story was about birds and 2) it was for Nestle Latino™. What a great opportunity! Still, why did you do that? Well, at the beginning the project was for 6 illustrations so it sounded doable. OK, then. Did you make the deadline? Yep. Was it difficult? Yep. Would you do it again? NO. And I warn you, don’t even try to convince me to take a deadline like that again. I will hurt you!

So I survived that June of bad meals, long hours and endless cursing to the lack of clones available for purchase. Now I got my copies in hand and get to blog about it. So get comfy and here we go!

The book is about a little bird, her birthday and her birthday wish. It is printed in both English and Spanish. Copies are handed for free during Nestle Latino™ events in California, Texas, New York and Florida.

Now a little bit of how I work. First I sketch my characters and then move on to a color version of at least my main character. This is the first Poppy I painted for the book. Later the beak got longer and curved upwards. A good improvement.

First Poppy

I normally sketch to size on paper and take care of revisions on tracing paper. I scan the revisions and add to the initial sketch in Photoshop. Some spreads are sketched and done with no revisions. Others take many, many revisions. A matter of tweaking as needed and requested.

Sketch of Poppy for Activity Pages

When I’m working, I like hanging the character studies and sketch I’m working on right in front of me. A good reminder of were I need to get. As I’m done with each illustration, I hang them and look at them over and over again – for reference and looking for changes. I always have changes. With this book, the time was really limited per illustration but I still made changes until it was time to ship them.

58. Jorge and Iguana Magazine

During the Spring I received a short story to illustrate for the July/August issue of “Iguana Magazine”. I immediately said yes knowing that “Iguana Magazine” is published in Spanish, it’s a children’s magazine and it aims to instill Latino pride to the children that read it. What else did I need to know? That the story was about a little boy that dreamed of Mermaids. There was no going back. Tight deadline and all, I took the project.

So this week I got my copy and eek! I loved what I saw. I picked up my envelope on the long ride to a furniture store in search of new bookstores – I’ve run out of shelves in my studio hence we are in search of new bookshelves to move some of my books to the living room but that’s another story so I digress. I picked up my envelope on my long ride to Tempe to a furniture store in search of new bookshelves for the living room. I opened and closed the magazine on the same page about 15 times. Opened. Looked. Ah! Closed. Opened. Looked. Eh! Closed. And repeated the endless loop as if I’d find something new the next time I opened the magazine on yet the same page. No, I was not the designated driver to our Tempe furniture “boutique.” What do you think? I’m not that reckless!

So as soon as we got home I took some quick pictures and wrote this post. And I know that deadlines are pretty tight for me right now but I had to share them with you. So without further ado, boys and girls, “Jorge, el Pintor de Sirenas” IN PRINT.

And now with all my Peruvian pride, some process photos I took while working on the pieces last June. I love taking process pictures and I bet you know that about me by now.

Christianne and Mark work really hard to bring an Spanish children’s magazine to this country and they deserve support. Show it by subscribing to “Iguana Magazine” for a year, two, three or four. You can read more about the magazine duo here. And now I leave you proudly saying: Hasta pronto!

59. A Day Like This

A Day Like This
10 years ago Chris Neal and I almost burnt a church down in Manhattan Beach with Peruvian hand-made candles. By 7pm that same day, my last name got longer and I would officially no longer have to go to the grocery store ever again. He gave me two crazy boys, a cat and a puppy. We built a home. He believed in me and made me go back to children’s illustration. Thanks to him I’m here now and you are reading me. They have been the best 10 years of my life and here’s to another 30 years together and a couple more quasi-burnt churches in our near future.

It’s been crazy, hectic and inspiring these last 3 weeks. I’m back to painting today and I’ll be posting a new coloring page next Monday.

61. Snorkling Buddy – Coloring Page

Snorkling BuddySummer Break Coloring Pages by Juana
Your Monday delivery is here, my friends. This week: Snorkling Buddy.

It’s going to be busy the next couple of weeks:

  • “The Messy One” with Picture Window Books/Capstone Publishers will be available August 1st
  • “Poppy Best Day Ever” a bilingual book with Nestlé Latino will be released that same week
  • I’m attending SCBWI LA Conference from August 5th through the 8th
  • I’m turning the big 40 August 5th

  • With that all going on and the books I’m currently working on, there’s lots of back and forth between my computer and drafting table chairs. Overall keeping calm and like Dory would say: “just keep swimming, just keep swimming” – Dory from “Finding Nemo,” my favorite animated character.

Our boys are done with their Summer Camp and I’ll get to spend some time with them until they start school in (yet again) 2 weeks. Uniforms, schools supplies and regular school preparation are keeping the house busy, too. Fun times. But don’t you worry, your regular weekly delivery will remain as scheduled during these crazy 2 weeks :)

And for now, I leave you and go back to work a little. See you next week!

You can now order “Lellie The Different Elephant” a book written by Lois Ann Garza. I illustrated the book with colored pencils. These pieces were the last done with this media. For the brighter pieces, I used inks to create an under-painting.

I got my copies this week so here I am sharing some pictures with you.

    64. What I learned from Dan Santat’s Workshop

Things take time for me to sink in so it makes sense that after a month of attending Dan Santat’s workshop here in Phoenix I finally can sort out what I’ve learned from it. So here is my recap of what I got out of the experience.
Warning: Results may vary depending on locations and illustrators.

1 Know Who You Admire In Order to Understand What You Need To Do As An Artist
Dan asked us to find a piece that we love. So as diligent as I am, I immediately created a Dropbox folder and dragged and dropped pieces that I felt were gorgeous for one reason or another. It didn’t take long until I realized I had over 30 jpeg files. So I had to narrow it down over and over again. Until I was left with 1 piece. The process confirmed my love for Rebecca Dautremer‘s work. In the process I clearly outlined what I love about her work and I know what I need to achieve on my work: her use of light, her portray of different cultures, and her incredible compositions. Now I have a clear direction.

    2 Learn From The “Masters”
Part of the assignment was to copy the 1 piece that you loved. So I did my copy. What did I learn? My eyes see colors a lot brighter than they need to be. Rebecca’s work has all these colors yet when I was copying her piece I had to force myself to mute my palette – a lot. I also learned how to use gouache by looking at her illustration. So next time that you love a piece even if you are too busy, I dare you to copy it. You have no idea all that you can learn.

My “copy” and the original below. The piece is from the book Cyrano from Edelvives.

Copy of Rebecca Dautremer's Cyrano piece

    3 Adopt From Everyone
Dan also gave us an acrylic demonstration. He painted a big, round, yellow moon for us. Before starting, he showed us how to make the Dan Santat Acrylic Palette. This part of the workshop I processed and adopted the very next Monday – I had to stop by the Art Store to pick up a couple of things. I can tell you, my new palette is fabulous. Thanks, Dan! So go out and look at other artists at work, you’ll always get something that you can incorporate in your work.

Copy of Rebecca Dautremer's Cyrano piece

    4 Face Your Fears
I’m going to be honest here: it was extremely difficult to get my copy started. I didn’t start until the Thursday before the workshop. I was simple scared of not being able to make a copy that looked like the original. It was a fear to look like a bad artist in front of other people that I really admire. The fear paralized me and if you think about it, there is no need to prove yourself against anyone but yourself. Once I accepted that, I was able to paint my assignment “copy” piece. So go ahead, face your fears. If you get a bad piece, so what? Next one will be better. Practice makes perfect.

Lellie and BuzzSummer Break Coloring Pages by Juana
It’s a special Monday today for 2 reason:
    1. It’s 4th of July aka Independence Day in the United States. Happy 4th!
    2. “Lellie the Different Elephant” that I illustrated is available at Amazon since last Saturday. Happy Lellie Day!

Lellie the Differente Elephant - Winter Light Books, 2011
With such special events happening this Monday, I dedicated the page to my friend Lellie and her bestie, Buzz. A bit more about Lellie: this is the story of a pretty unique elephant, her friendship with the most unusual friend, Buzz and her overcoming her “shortenings”. “Lellie the Different Elephant” is a 32 page picturebook written by Lois Ann Garza. All illustrations were done with colored pencils – the last book I did with this medium. I’ll follow up with a blog post with more pictures once I receive my copies.

Now back to you and your family: Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July and you get to see lots of fireworks if you are in the United States.

See you next Monday, my friends! :)

    67. My New Puppy – Coloring Page

My New PuppySummer Break Coloring Pages by Juana
Monday again and that means New Coloring Page! This week I bring you: My New Puppy.

Do you remember years back when it was only you and your puppy having some special time together? I do. So much love and I remember it being so quiet. Quiet time: sometimes a sweet memory in this home. Sigh. We all need and deserve some so print your coloring pages and get your little ones busy for a few minutes. If your pups is cuddling next to you while you are enjoying a quiet home, even better.

    Puppy
My dog is always next to me when I’m working. He doesn’t care if it’s too hot or too cold in the studio or if it’s too early in the morning or too late at night. He’s always there. I do love Puppy. Yep, my dog’s name is Puppy or as I pronounce it: Papi.

Have a great week, hug your pups and see you next week!

Recuerdan años atrás cuando eran solo ustedes y su perrito pasando un rato juntos? Yo me acuerdo. Tanto amor y tanto silencio.
