Chrysalis: The Vicereine’s Elemental Dagger
Many of the Vicereine’s allies, and even a few of her opponents might consider her carrying a physical combat weapon just another of her many eccentricities, but those who know her are well aware, eccentricity aside, Reina is not given to a lack of rationale. So it is with Chrysalis, her treasured elemental dagger.
Coming as she does from the northernmost province of Aventar, Reina’s study of arcane magic has included considerable work with crystals, ice and snow, and the elemental forces behind them. As she expanded her knowledge to include alchemy, Reina gained the ability to conjure elements and to transmute their forms one to the next. So the Vicereine of Kulnas set about to see if she could conjure a blade and use the structure of the metal itself to fashion a fine edge.
Exiled in her Thesian sanctuary, there was nothing to interrupt Reina’s progress, and so she discarded some of her more successful attempts as she obsessively sought the ultimate expression of her inspiration. Each conjured blade had to be broken out of the mass of ice that surrounded it as it formed, and with each shattered batch of melting shards strewn across the floor of her alchemy lab, Reina inched closer to her goal.
It was not until the blade she had conjured seemed to absorb the ice around it that the Vicereine was sure she had succeded. There on the worktable was the finest blade Reina had ever seen. She examined it thoroughly. The edge was so perfect that even with her ability to see beyond the physical realm, she could find not a single flaw. It was during this examination that she also realized she had unknowingly infused the blade with an elemental spirit of ice.
Reina named her new dagger Chrysalis to commemorate its transformation from conjured metal and ice to weapon and then to being. Although very few have ever seen her use Chrysalis in battle, Reina’s aides-de-camp have often whispered among themselves that the power of the enraged elemental ice spirit can be released when the blade strikes, and that it can instantly freeze all the blood in the veins of the Vicereine’s opponent solid.
