I have loved every thing I've seen him do. Such completely engrossing visuals - telling entire tales and building complex worlds in such a short period of time. Complete with super models...

Heh - I fell in love with this ad campaign when it first aired starting back in 2000-2001 I believe. I looked up the director back then - hoping that he was also directing fantasy/period movies, since these were so fabulous. (As far as I can tell, that is not the case - darn!) He does continue to direct breath-taking, award winning commercials - as I will demonstrate in a follow-up post.
These are wonderful! What a shame he isn't making movies. I especially like the firefly one! Thanks for sharing and giving me inspiration this morning. x

Hayden and Garden Ms. S - I know! I had to watch it about 10 times before I quit crying every time. (My daughter walked in on me during one of the early viewings and was appalled at my emotional display over a commercial!)

It amazes me what business practices are accepted in some arenas when you would never consider them in others. I've lost count of the number of 'offers' I've had for the luxurious remuneration of 'exposure' or 'it'd be good for your portfolio'.... You know, steak/beef - it's all 'cow'...

My particular favorite - "Well, we don't have the budget now, but we just want to license your old work for royalties. It's no extra work for you, and we're sure to hit it big!"
If people were to think for more than five seconds and follow the Golden Rule, they wouldn't pull stunts like this.
Even with my very limited skills in crafting, I've come across hijinks like this. People wanting to barter, then saying, "Oh, well, my shipping costs are higher than yours, so I'll take $30 worth of your stuff and send you a single item I've priced at $8." Pass, thanks.
This happens all the time in tattooing, too. Everyone thinks if they give you a sob story about how poor they are somehow your price will miraculously drop. They all believe they are deserving of a "hook up", and will even explain how they could get "the same thing" for $20 by their friend in their basement. Seriously?!? It drives me nuts.
Love. Love. Love . Eddie Steeples, aka Rubberband Man, aka Crabman (My name is Earl). Fell in love with him from the first time I saw this commercial. I would stop what I was doing to watch these spots! YouTube has "the making of" that commercial, worth the watching, too.

Gloomy, chilly January...you should come down and visit Texas sometime. :) Today was bright and cheerful with blue, blue skies. No clouds once the fog burned off this morning. Just a bit of ice here and there in those ever dark shaded areas untouched by sun.
Well, that was the original intention, anyway. I was going to find a series of interesting links involving authors and their daily lives. For example, here is the charming Cecil Castellucci talking about her life as it relates to her new YA novel Beige. I love, Ms. Castellucci. She stopped by my library one day in search of Mo Willems (this is true) and I had the opportunity to chat with her. I want to be her friend.
Remember, I don't review YA, so I'll never be able to give my opinion on her newest, but for a book that I DID review, check out her new graphic novel The Plain Janes, which is completely child appropriate and deserves a glance.
Moving on, proof positive that Neil Gaiman is charm incarnate.
Two facts come to mind. The fact that he evinces no fear of the large furry rodent flying about his head proves that he IS Neil Gaiman. The fact that he has a bat in his house establishes that, yes, he does indeed live in the Midwest.
Well, so that was my intention with today's Video Sunday. And then I saw that Galleycat had posted the YouTube preview of the French adaptation of Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis. The French speakers amongst you will appreciate this.
After that, everything broke down completely. Animation seemed a good way to go. Eric Berlin had linked to a nice and wholly illegal version of Calvin & Hobbes (which tied in nicely to the Chicken Spaghetti discussion on old C&H earlier this week. I was going to put it here. Heck, I copied the URL and everything. But look what happens when you click on it now.
Looks like old I-won't-sue Watterson actually brought action against whoever created this. Color me disappointed. Only a book trailer for a picture book could cheer me up now.
That's the stuff. Sent by illustrator Brian Floca himself no less.
And, for those of you who may have been a bit disappointed by the latest Spiderman film, take comfort. Here's a look at a bit of Spiderman ala Japan that is so oddly charming, I know I would have adored this film as a kid.
Because what is more children's literature related than comic books? This came from the Sandbox with love. I love how the woman could only memorize one line for the show.

One wee correction: bats aren't rodents. They belong to the order called Chiroptera, which means "hand-wing." They've more in common with humans than they have with mice (though many of them have those cute mouse-like faces).
Neil Gaiman is gallant, though.

Second correction: Persepolis was originally written and published *in* French, so it's the English edition that's the adaption. The French is the original.
Do bats not happen in other parts of the country? I just thought that was normal. I live very near Gaiman, so bats are a fairly normal thing here, but it never occurred to me that they may not be normal elsewhere.

Then again, since Persepolis is being made into a film from a book, it is an adaptation. And since it's citizens of France who are doing the adapting, it is French. So one could say that it's a French adaptation. If one were looking for an out.

I think the bats-are-rodents idea harkens back to the Calvin & Hobbes where Calvin keeps insisting in his "report" that they are, in fact, insects.
Thank God for YouTube. People think I spend a lot of time on this blog, but usually I fool them by merely linking one YouTube video to another. Presenting other people's hard work makes it look, by extension, as if I work hard. And we know that this is not the case.
Now half the charm of this first piece lies in attempting to spot someone you know. Five points to anyone that locates a familiar face. The music gives this just the right tone too.

OK, here's my guess: is that Betsy B. filmed walking away during the "hipster librarians" segment, at minute 1:30, wearing colorful wellies and carrying a large pink bag over her shoulder?
I remember taking library science classes in Minnesota, where the topic of luring more people of different backgrounds to the field came up regularly. Copious grants were offered at the time to potential students. I don't know if MLIS programs elsewhere around the country do anything similar.
And sadly I've ne'er owned a pair of wellies a day in my life. Sensible librarian shoes, that's the life for me! I do not know anyone in the video, myself, though for half-a-second I thought I could see my boss of all bosses.
