& book giveaway contest!
Most of us have heard of that famous literary nurse, Cherry Ames. Cherry Ames' only dream was to be a nurse, she never went anywhere without her perky smile and things always worked out perfectly for her. Lois Roelofs is no Cherry Ames...but then, Cherry Ames is no Lois Roelofs! Roelofs' memoir Caring Lessons: A Nursing Professor's Journey of Faith and Self focuses on her nursing career but it isn't a book just for those in the medical profession. Her memoir is a record of making difficult choices, dealing with changes in the workplace, returning to school, juggling career and family—challenges we can all identify with no matter what our chosen career.

About the Author:
Lois Roelofs describes herself as a rebellious minister's daughter, a reluctant nurse, a restless mom and a perpetual student who eventually became a fun-loving teacher of mental health nursing. During her forty-year nursing career, she cared for patients and taught nursing students primarily in mental health and medical-surgical settings. As a caregiver, she learned the value of caring for herself and did so by changing jobs to suit her interests, going back to school more than once to feed her craving for learning, and seeking professional help when personal and family crises invaded her life.
You will be amused, saddened, and inspired as you read this intimate and introspective memoir. Plus you will learn the importance of faith, family, and friendship—whatever your profession—and come away with a new appreciation of caring for yourself as well as caring for others.

What a fabulous inspiration for me! I began nursing school in Fall 2010 at age 62 and am now entering my 3rd quarter...hopefully I'll make it through this one and the next three. I have waited a very long time to pursue a passion - I love the medical field and desire the credibility to accompany my alternative beliefs in the area of healing. I look forward to reading this memoir that I know will be filled with rich and rewarding memories! Thank you for writing it!
Amazing post! Thanks a lot for sharing.
I have the utmost respect for nurses and how much you add to every single patient's life and care. My newborn was in the NICU for a month, and the nurses became everything to us. It is wonderful that you've written a book about your experiences as a nurse(which aren't easy) and how it affected every aspect of your life. Good luck with everything--a nurse and an author--goodness you like challenges. :)
I am psyched for this book as I am an RN and worked mental health for several years!
My son has mental health issues, and through all of his hospitalizations, I've wondered how the nurses can keep showing up every day, and how they continuously offered caring and patience for this populations of patients. I love my son, and care for him, but am at a loss as to what to do when he is in the middle of a crisis - thank goodness there are nurses (and doctors and medications) who we can call on for help!
I almost went into nursing many years ago & have been considering going back to school for it. Very much looking forward to reading this! Thanks!
Lois, I look forward to reading your book. I want to tell you how much I appreciate you writing this book...at this stage of your life. I am 62 years old, and have recently decided that I have some important things to share and I need to write them down. Thanks for being an encouragement to me... and I am sure many others!
I am a retired nurse turned children's book author. I enjoyed the interview and I look forward to reading Caring Lessons. Thanks for sharing.
Lois, I think we are kindred spirits: We're the same age; we both worked in jobs that generated lots of great stories; and we both want to share those stories with everyone. I was an English teacher for thirty-two years, and I have wonderful "war stories" from those three plus decades in the classroom with teenagers. You have inspired me to write a memoir of those precious, priceless days! I'd love to read your stories about nursing. I, too, was "nursing" . . . diagnosing "illnesses," prescribing remedies, and watching my "patients" work their way to good health . . . in grammar, vocabulary, composition, and literature. Strange comparison? I don't think so. Congratulations on your publication!
So cool very nice!
This reminded me of the promise I made to myself 6 years ago to tell a family story that was inspired by an old doll given to me by my grandmother over 40 years ago. Congratulations on your publication snd your encouraging words to help keep me on the path I've chosen. I will get there, too.
Hi Lois,
As one nurse/writer to another, congratulations on your book. I wish you great success with your blog tour and your writing career. Enjoy your success; you've earned it.
my congratulations!
