1. A Pup Just For Me, A Boy Just For Me

Pup Just for Me, a Boy Just for Me by Dorothea P. Seeber (Author), Ed Young (Illustrator); Philomel, 2002.

Ages 4-8

This book is very innovative because it can be read from front to back and back to front. When read front to back, Seeber tells the story of a boy's search for a puppy. "I'll get him a kitty," thinks Mother. "I'll get Rod a turtle," announces Dad. "Goldfish are nice," says Plump Polly Price. "I'll give some to Roddy." But Roddy doesn't want a gold-fish. The pet Roddy wants is a puppy!
When read from back to front, Seeber tells the story of a little black dog who bounces from owner to owner, but none proves satisfactory. He is alternately mistreated, neglected, or teased, and he runs away from each home in search of what he knows will be the perfect situation. When read either way, they meet up in the middle of the book and each finds what they've been looking for all along- very creative!
