2. Books Read in January 2010

This is a list of the books that I read in January, broken up into Picture Books, Middle Grade Books, Young Adult Books, and Adult Fiction. 3. Books Read in 2009: Picture Books, Easy Readers, Middle Grade, Young Adult, and Adult

This is a list of all of the books that I read in 2009, broken up into Picture Books, Easy Readers, Middle Grade Books, Young Adult Books, Adult Fiction, and Adult Nonfiction. That's a total of 220 books, though 59 were picture books and easy readers, leaving 161 MG/YA/adult titles. Surprisingly, I read exactly 161 MG/YA/adult titles last year, too. I guess I'm more consistent than I give myself credit for. I did read more adult and young adult titles this year, and fewer middle grade books, which likely means that my page total is up a bit. I'm not setting any reading goals for next year, but if I manage to stay in this general ballpark, I'll be pretty happy.

Wishing you all a book-filled 2010!

12. Books Read in 2008

This is a list of all of the books that I've read in 2008, broken up into Picture Books, Middle Grade Books, Young Adult Books, Adult Fiction, and Adult Nonfiction. The grand total is 211 books read, but 50 of them were picture books, so I ended well short of my goal of reading 200 books not counting picture books. (Did I really only read 5 books in December? I find that very sad!) Still, I managed to review a pretty good percentage of the books that I read this year (123 to date, or nearly 60%, with a few additional picture book reviews pending), so that's a happy thing. Here's hoping for more reading and reviewing time in 2009!

14. Books Read in August

This is a list of all of the books that I read in August, broken up into Picture Books, Middle Grade Books, Young Adult Books, and Adult Fiction. August was a good reading month, 30 books total, of which 9 were picture books. In an unusual breakdown for me, I actually read more adult titles than middle grade and YA combined. 17. 2008 Titles I'm Most Eager to Find

This morning I noticed that lots of people were writing about books that they are looking forward to reading in 2008, and I thought that I would join in. Colleen Mondor has the round-up of other participants - all great posts, well worth reading.

I'm not including books that are already in my to be read stack (because those are a foregone conclusion that I will get to them), or 2008 titles that I've already been fortunate enough to read (2007, 2008). But here are a few titles that come out this year that I don't already have that I am particularly looking forward to:

18. My 2007 Reading List and 2008 Plans

Here is the list of all of the books that I read in 2007, with links to my reviews, where applicable. (Some favorites are also highlighted here.) The list is broken up into Children's and Young Adult Books, Adult Fiction, and Adult Non-Fiction. My goal for this year was to read 200 books, slightly more than I read last year. Being a bit of an over-achiever, I ended up at 230, including 35 books for adults. For 2008, I'd like to read 200 books not counting picture books. I still plan to read picture books, but I'm going to keep track of them as a separate number. I would also like to continue publishing at least 3 book reviews a week throughout the year, though that one is likely a stretch goal. I wish you all a book-filled 2008!

Adult Fiction

  1. Jacqueline Winspear: Messenger of Truth. Completed January 4, 2007. The fourth book in the wonderful Maisie Dobbs series, historical fiction set in post-World War I England.
  2. Andrea Camillieri: The Smell of the Night. Completed January 18, 2007. My latest read from the Inspector Montalbano series, set in Sicily.
  3. Harlan Coben: Promise Me. Completed January 20, 2007. This is a new Myron Bolitar book, after several years absence. It's great to have him back!
  4. T. Jefferson Parker: The Fallen. Completed January 26, 2007. This is a standalone book about a cop who is thrown from a sixth floor window. He survives with a new ability: he sees emotions as colors, and can tell when people are lying to him.
  5. Lee Child: The Hard Way. Completed February 2, 2007. This is the latest in Child's Jack Reacher series, which I normally really enjoy. I didn't like this one as much as the other because a) I found the mystery and clues a bit too easy to figure out, and didn't understand why Reacher didn't figure them out and b) there was a searing recounting by a character of previous torture that I'm having trouble getting out of my mind.
  6. Jasper Fforde: The Fourth Bear: A Nursery Crime. Viking. Completed February 8, 2007, on MP3 from audible.com. This one took me a long time to get through, because I was listening at a time I wasn't walking very much. It was entertaining, but I still prefer Fforde's Thursday Next series to this one.
  7. Barry Maitland: No Trace. St. Martin's Minotaur. Completed February 15, 2007. The latest David Brock / Kathy Kolla mystery, this one involving three kidnapped girls, set in the cutting edge London art gallery scene. I suspected the bad guy from early on, but Maitland did an excellent job of mis-direction, keeping me thinking, "no, maybe this is what's going on." Definitely on the dark side of the mystery spectrum.
  8. P. J. Tracy: Snow Blind. Completed February 23, 2007. I found this suspense story well-written and engaging, but it left me dissatisfied. I thought that the ending was frustratingly ambiguous, and, on reflection, thought that the plot relied on too many coincidences. I have enjoyed the previous books in the series, and I probably would still read future books, but I didn't care for this one.
  9. Ann Benson: The Burning Road. Dell. Completed March 1, 2007. Sequel to The Plague Tales.
  10. M. C. Beaton: Agatha Raisin and The Deadly Dance. St. Martins. Completed March 7, 2007 This is an entertaining cozy series, centered around a somewhat grouchy retired career woman who lives in the English Cotswalds and stumbles upon various mysteries. I don't read very many cozy series, but something about the bite of Agatha's personality appeals to me.
  11. Laura Lippman: No Good Deeds. Harper. Completed March 8, 2007. This is a return by Lippman to her Tess Monaghan series. Tess is a Baltimore private investigator. In this installment, her boyfriend Crow, through an intended good deed, drags her into a dangerous situation.
  12. Ann Benson: The Physician's Tale. Delacorte Press. Completed March 17, 2007. This is the third, and apparently final, book in Benson's Plague Tales series. I found this book, set in a plague decimated world, utterly compelling, and kept thinking about it when I was away from the book.
  13. Julia Spencer-Fleming: All Mortal Flesh. Completed April 6, 2007. The latest in the Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Allstyne series, about a female Episcopal priest who falls in love with a married small-town police chief. They solve mysteries togther. I'm a sucker for these star-crossed lover stories. The mystery in this one is a bit too close to home for the pair - the murder of Russ's wife, Linda, for which both Russ and Clare are suspects. This is one of my favorite series, and this one did not disappoint, and even surprised me with a major twist. Best sentence: "Meg's family room was always filled with sprawls of teenage boys, her kitchen overrun with giggles of girls."
  14. Victoria Thompson: Murder in Little Italy. Berkley Prime Crime. Completed April 8, 2007. Eighth book in the Gaslight Mystery series, set in New York during the 1890s (while Theodore Roosevelt was Police Commissioner), featuring Sarah Brandt, a midwife from a wealthy family, and Frank Malloy, one of the few honest police detectives in the city. This series just keeps getting better. The next book, Murder in Chinatown, is due out in June.
  15. Cormac McCarthy: The Road. Knopf. Completed April 9, 2007. A beautifully written tale set in an incredibly bleak post-apocalyptic future. I didn't find it as compelling as some post-apocalypse/dystopian stories because one of the key ingredients was largely missing. There's little wondering what you would do, because the available options have already shrunk down to "scrounge for food and warmth", pretty much. But still an interesting and quick read.
  16. Carol O'Connell: Find Me. Putnam. Completed April 21, 2007. Latest book in the Mallory series, as compelling as the others, and revealing new layers of Mallory's character.
  17. Margaret Atwood: The Handmaid's Tale. Anchor Books. Completed May 9, 2007. Mini-review at Dystopian Challenge Blog.
  18. Robert Crais: The Watchman. Simon & Schuster. Completed May 20, 2007. This book is a twist on Crais' Elvis Cole series, featuring sidekick Joe Pike as the star.
  19. Lee Child: Bad Luck and Trouble. Delacorte Press. Completed June 14, 2007.
  20. Janet Evanovich: Lean Mean Thirteen. St. Martin's Press. Completed June 26, 2007. Very funny. I don't know how she manages to sustain the Morelli-Ranger tension, basically walking a tightrope through the whole book, but it works.
  21. Jeffrey Deaver: The Sleeping Doll. Simon & Schuster. Completed July 5, 2007, on MP3.
  22. Carrie Bebris: North by Northanger. Tor Books, the latest in an adult mystery series featuring Elizabeth Darcy, after Pride and Prejudice. Completed August 5, 2007.
  23. Andrea Camilleri: Rounding the Mark. Penguin Books, from the Inspector Montalbano series set in Sicily. Completed August 6, 2007.
  24. Andrea Camilleri: The Patience of the Spider. Penguin Books, from the above series. Completed August 7, 2007.
  25. Nancy Pickard: The Virgin of Small Plains. Ballantine Books, more a literary novel than a mystery, winner of the Agatha Award. Completed August 7, 2007.
  26. James Rollins: Black Order. Harper. Completed August 9, 2007.
  27. Elizabeth Kostova. The Historian. Little, Brown. Completed August 17, 2007, on MP3.
  28. Louise Penny: Still Life (A Three Pines Mystery). St. Martin's Minotaur. Completed August 31, 2007.
  29. Benjamin Black (aka John Banville): Christine Falls. Henry Holt. Completed September 6, 2007, on MP3. Well-written, very detailed characterization, but a bit slow-paced for listening on audio. I think I would have preferred it in print.

Adult Non-Fiction

  1. Craig Kielburger and Marc Kielburger: Me to We: Finding Meaning in a Material World. Completed January 5, 2007. This book was a gift from my friend Jonathan White, who works closely with the authors as a member of Free the Children's board of directors. It's a great book that will give any reader food for thought about finding meaning and joy in life.
  2. Kathleen T. Horning (ill. Stacy Innerst): From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books. HarperTrophy. Completed March 16, 2007. While much of the material is introductory, I thought that the author made some excellent points about reviewing children's books thoughtfully and seriously.

19. Favorite Reads from 2007

Colleen Mondor was kind enough to include me in her Recommendations from Many Bookish Folks series this holiday season. I'm in illustrious company, with editors and authors and the like. I'm grateful to Colleen for inspiring me to put together a favorites list, and I've elected to re-publish the list here, with links to reviews of each book.

I've read many wonderful books this year. These are just a few that stand out as personal favorites, books that I want to keep on my shelves. I'm not saying that these are the "best books" of 2007 (some of them are actually from 2006 or 2008). I'm saying that these are some children's and young adult titles that I first read this year that resonated with me personally. There are many others that I loved, too, including some re-reads, but I tried to keep the list to manageable proportions.

Picture Books:

Middle Grade (in age order):

Young Adult:

Thanks again, Colleen! And happy reading to all!

20. November 2007 Reading List

This is a list of all of the books that I read in November, all children's and young adult books this month. It's not as high a number as I would like (I always want to have more time to read). However, I did do a pretty good job of reviewing the books that I read, with one planned review still pending. I find that for me, the key is to sit down and write the review immediately, if at all possible. And for those keeping score, I'm at 198 books for the year so far, which makes my goal of 200 pretty well within reach. I think that for 2008 I'm going to break out the picture books separately, and go for 200 not including the picture books. But that might be a bit aggressive...

22. September 2007 Reading List

September was a pretty good month for reading for me, and also a good month for writing reviews (though I'm still behind on a few middle grade titles). Of course, this month's 22 titles is not as impressive as it might seem on the surface, because many of the books were picture books. Not that I don't love picture books, but they don't require quite the same time commitment for reading, do they?

This is a list of all of the books that I read in August, broken up into Children's Books and Adult Fiction.
