The selections for Cartoon Brew’s 5th annual Student Animation Festival will be announced next Wednesday, June 25. Also, since many students learned about the festival recently at Annecy, we are re-opening the submission period through this Sunday, June 22nd. If you’ve already submitted, please DO NOT send your film again. But, if you haven’t sent your film yet, learn how to submit HERE.

For the fifth year in a row, we are pleased to announce our annual Cartoon Brew Student Film Festival. The mission for the festival is simple: to honor student-produced animated shorts and share them with the widest possible community of industry decision-makers, fellow students, and animation enthusiasts from around the world.

For the fourth year in a row, we are delighted to present the Cartoon Brew Student Animation Festival, the premier online showcase for animated short premieres by student filmmakers.

Our 2013 festival offers one of the strongest and most dynamic slates of short films since we launched the festival. Chosen from a record-breaking 266 film submissions, the eight films in this year’s festival represent a remarkably high level of creative vision and filmmaking skill. The films selected were made by adventurous filmmakers who show a commitment to exploring the narrative and visual possibilities of the animation art form, and whose ideas and concepts are fully realized.

More quality student work was submitted than ever before. In fact, half of the films in this year’s festival are from schools that haven’t been in the festival during its first three years—Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, DePaul University, University of Southern California and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. On the other hand, Eric Ko is the first filmmaker who has been selected twice for the festival; his junior film Troubleshooting was a part of our festival last year.

Each of the eight filmmakers whose work is featured in this year’s festival will receive a cash award of $500 (US), thanks to the generosity of our festival sponsor JibJab. Further, Evan Spiridellis, the co-founder of JibJab, will select one additional film to receive the Grand Prize and an extra $500, for a cash prize totalling $1,000 US.

The festival will debut on Monday, July 8th, and a new film will be presented every week throughout July and August. And now, we proudly present the 2013 class of Cartoon Brew’s Student Animation Festival:

Lady with Long Hair

It’s that time of year again. Our annual call for entries for Cartoon Brew’s 4th Student Film Festival, a yearly showcase of outstanding student films from around the globe. We received over 200 submissions for last year’s festival, and aim to top that number this year.

Our mission for the festival is simple: to draw attention to student-produced animated shorts and share them with the widest possible community of industry artists, fellow students and animation fans. And not just any student films, but films of the highest caliber…the most original, the most thought-provoking, the ones that make us laugh hardest and engage us emotionally. Of course, we present student films throughout the year on Cartoon Brew, but we want the festival to draw even more attention to the exciting work being produced by the art form’s emerging talents.

Every filmmaker whose work is selected to screen in Cartoon Brew’s Student Animation Festival will receive $500 US. This year, special guest judge Evan Spiridellis, the co-founder of JibJab, will select one additional film to receive the Grand Prize and a $1,000 cash prize.

RULES

1. Your film has to be animated. (Obviously.)
2. 
 Your film has to be a student work. (Even more obvious.)
3. Must have been completed after May 1, 2012.

4. Must be an online premiere. (Films that are accessible online to the public will not be considered.)

5. Submissions due by Friday, May 31, 2013.

To submit, send an email to studentfest (at) cartoonbrew (dot) com with the following info:

• Your name, school and country

• Film title and synopsis

• Private link & password (ex: Password-Protected Vimeo/Unlisted YouTube link).

WHAT HAPPENS IF I’M SELECTED


Up to 8 films will be selected for this year’s festival. We will announce the festival selections in early to mid-June. Screenings will begin on Cartoon Brew in late June. Every film that is selected to screen as part of the Cartoon Brew Student Film Festival will be paid a screening fee of $500(US). One of the selected films will be awarded the Grand Prize and a $1,000 cash award. We don’t assume any exclusivity or ownership of your film. In other words, you are still free to submit to festivals, sell it to distributors, and post it anywhere else on the Internet shortly after it debuts online in our festival.

We’re extremely delighted to announce today that the winner of Cartoon Brew’s 2012 Student Animation Festival AUDIENCE PRIZE is Money Bunny Blues by Ellen Coons. The award was voted by Cartoon Brew readers who participated in a poll earlier this month. (We audited the poll and eliminated any IP that voted multipled times.) Ellen’s film was created at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. She will receive $500, in addition to the money she already earned for being a part of our Student Festival.

Beginning tomorrow morning and for the nine weeks that follow, get ready for Cartoon Brew’s 3rd annual Student Animation Festival. We can’t wait to share this year’s amazing line-up of student films with everybody.

Join Cartoon Brew this Monday, October 3, for a FREE screening of this year’s selections in Cartoon Brew’s Student Animation Festival. Sure, you can see them all on-line (we’re posting the last one this Monday), but we think the films are even cooler viewed with an audience on a giant HD-format LED screen against the side of a building in midtown Manhattan.

We’re putting on the show in collaboration with the fine film purveyors at the Big Screen Plaza who have been hosting a solid line-up of animation and live-action films all summer long. Most of the films they show are professional productions, and we’re extremely delighted that they’re celebrating the quality of these student productions alongside their other programs.

Screening starts at 7pm and the location is 851 6th Avenue (between 29th and 30th St., behind the Eventi Hotel). If you’re coming from work and hungry, rest assured there’s an indoor cafe where you can grab a bite before or during the screening. And if you see Amid, say hi. (He’s friendly as long as you don’t talk about animation with him.) Here’s the Facebook invite page.
