1. Meeting Miss Molly and Miss Kelly

Me and Kelly Light

Me and Molly Idle

I have some great friends I've never met. Let me clarify, I've never met them in person. We Skype, Hangout, text, tweet, & message, but have never met face to face. This year has been great for finally meeting some of them in real life. The wonderful thing is, the online friendships flow right into real life seamlessly. I feel like I've known, really known, some of these friends for ages. We just click. I feel so lucky!

I also want to thank Hicklebees for bringing some of these friends to my area so we can spend time together. They've been acting as my social secretary this year.

I also got to meet Mary Engelbreit this summer. You can read about it here.

2. More sketching

I met with Tracy Bishop again for a sketch date today. We usually meet to draw from life, which has been a great way for me to get over my FEAR OF DRAWING IN PUBLIC. Today, we both used the time to work on some personal projects. I've been up to my ears illustrating organic gardening books lately, so I haven't been creating characters like I used to. I was so happy to let these guys out!

After sketching, we hit our local kids' bookstore, Hicklebee's. Love that store! I've had this book, When Blue Met Egg, on my list of must buys for a couple of months. It's illustrated by Lindsay Ward, who used to work at Hicklebee's, by the way. I love her use of collage!

3. Weekending

We said goodbye to my friend, Devon, who's heading off to Germany this week. I'll miss her, but I'm so excited for her and her family. What an adventure! I hope she finds the time to post all about it on her blog. (Hint, hint).

We had a quick lunch in Willow Glen on Saturday. It has such a cute Main Street feel. It's also the home of my favorite children's bookstore, Hicklebee's. This week they are hosting Jon Klassen and Mac Barnett who are promoting their book, Extra Yarn. Such a clever book! To promote it, Hicklebee's covered this tree in yarn! So fun!

4. Meet David Shannon!

I got to Hicklebee's and found a sea of babies!
David Shannon was actually quite hilarious. He read his latest book, 'It's Christmas, David!' to the crowd.
He then drew David & broke it down for everyone with a little story. The jagged teeth are based on his childhood friend's yellow, ugly teeth. His nose is a crooked triangle because he broke his nose 5 times. My favorite: the left nostril is bigger because he's left handed (nose-picking... chuckle chuckle :)
David: what accessory could we give David?
Everyone: A HAT!!
Small voice from the crowd: Awww, I was gonna say ornaments for earrings.
David: No crossdressing, David!

5. A Hicklebee's Hurrah

Last Thursday I drove down to San Jose to be part of Hicklebee's Educator Night. Owner Valerie Lewis invited children's authors to be the surprise guests during her book talk to teachers. A whopping 150 teachers attended, and many more were turned away, so you can imagine the energy at the bookstore! I spoke about An Eye for Color, then signed my books and met the teachers who will be sharing my biography in their classrooms.

One teacher from Trinity School in Menlo Park told me a tradition at their school is to buy a book in the name of whomever's birthday it is - be it teacher or student - and donate it to the library. I thought that was a great idea.

I had the pleasure of sitting next to Alex Beard who drew animals inside his book covers for people who bought The Jungle Grapevine.

As a first-timer at Hicklebee's I was asked to sign the bathroom wall, a tradition in her store. Now I share wall space with Mo Willems and J.K. Rowling.Thank you, Valerie, for inviting me!

Authors in above photo: Natasha Wing, Alex Beard, Sarah Klise, Teri Sloat, owner Valerie Lewis (in back), Betsy Franco, and Kristin Venuti.

6. I Heart Chris Brown

Strictly in a musical way mind you. He's young enough to be my...younger brother.

His CD dropped today and the music channels are on CB overload. He was on 106th & Park tonight, one of the music channels was doing a Chris Brown special and BET is doing one tomorrow.

When the camera panned the 106th & Park audience, one girl was crying and screaming. The hubster was like, Seriously?

Men just can't appreciate the special bond between fans and teen idols.

The crying seems over the top to anyone over the age of twenty or with an X chromosone, but music evokes emotion. And Chris Brown makes some really fun, young tunes. Add to that his energetic dance moves and playful smile and you've got a bonafied teen heartthrob on your hands.

What I like most about Chris Brown is that he's not one of those manufactured teen idols. The type where the looks are the primary focus and then like, oh yeah he can sing too.

Unlike the average teen pop idol, it's his music and dancing that make him a cutie. The focus is very much on the way he moves and how playful he is when he's performing.

Now, much respect due to Jay-Z, whose CD also dropped today (and I love me some, Jigga), but I think Chris Brown can give him a run for his money. First of all, his single, Kiss, Kiss is 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Second, never underestimate the power of the teen girl dollar.
