I was sitting down, pencil in hand, sketchbook in front of me, when I heard the weirdest thing.
new posts in all blogs
Still playing with perspective. I've noticed that it does involve more thinking and closing your eyes in order to picture how it would look like from a different perspective. But I also think its worth it, it makes the illustration much more interesting to look at. Why do you think that is?
I think the reason is that it is silently saying much more from the character's point of view. It is just as if the viewer gets to be there with the characters, therefore experiences the plot in a deeper level.
I don't think all illustrations should have different angles, or exaggerated perspectives but some of them really benefit from this, while others need the simplicity and quietness of a plain perspective.
I'm calling out to all you out there to come and join me and Gina on a challenging exercise. Gina Perry is a wonderful illustrator who came back from her last conference all charged and inspired. This is what she had to say:
"During Laurie Halse Anderson's keynote at the 2008 NESCBWI conference last weekend, she gave us a challenge. Think you don't have time? She does. At least 15 minutes. Pick a time of day and mark it in your dayplanner or calender. She mentioned that it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Also, pick a buddy or two to help you stay focused and on track. I challenge all of you who read this to join me."
So.. what do you think huh? Want to join us? She already started but I'm going to join her anyways. It doesn't matter if you don't post about it one day, not a big deal, the idea is to force ourselves to do something on a regular basis for at least 15 minutes a day, for 21 days... to challenge us to be creative, think outside the box. To experiment with new things, subjects, materials.
This is what I'm thinking, I'll start first with the exercise of drawing and sketching things I don't usually do. If you see my sketchbook is full of cuddly and soft characters, usually bunnies, dogs, cats, etc... So I'll start my excersise working on subjects I never do, like for example bugs. I never draw bugs.. don't know why really.
After that I might try and work on sketching at different and odd perspectives. I think I need to challenge myself there. From high above, really down below or from a character's point of view.
Another one will be to try different mediums. I love my watercolors and will stick to them loyaly. But I want to try out different things like pastels, acrylics, gouache but always trying to mantain my style.
After this I'll think of something else. But I find this opportunity to be a challenging one and if we are together on this then even better. Who cares if we screw up, we are just playing around and having fun together, right?
If you feel you want to join us, leave a comment saying so and I'll link you to Gina's blog and I'll post the people that joined on the sidebar so that it will be easier to visit all.
I will be starting tomorrow, but you can join us any day.
Come on then, pick up your pencil, pen, brush, mouse or whatever it is you like to sketch with and let's dare to be different!!

I had to turn down the volume of my music to listen more carefully. But nothing.. just silence..
I was about to do my sketch for the exercise of the day and thought of trying to render in colored pencil again but with a lighter paper this time as suggested by our friend Paola, when I heard it again... it sounded something like this:
"psss.. psss... draw me.. , choose me.., color me..."
I have to say this is the first time something like this happens to me, but the voice I heard..
..wasn't the radio.. wasn't a neighbor.. No! It was Super Bunny!!
And you know what else he said?
He said he should have his glasses on, because he couldn't see a darn thing! ;o)
Super Bunny

Robots
Another subject I never sketch is robots. So I thought I would give it a try today.
I found out that there are so many possibilities for drawing robots as far as parts and shapes I mean, that you would think is easy to come up with a great and unique looking one.. not the case. I think is difficult actually.
Anyway.. here are my very basic robots on their very first ballet lesson. Good thing little Martha is a very patient teacher :o)

I am in the last stages of the book I'm working on and have been quite busy but they moved the deadline of the book to earlier so this is going to be a crazy crazy week for me. That on top of a terrible cold I woke up with this morning! I will try my best to keep posting, even if they are tiny posts, promise...

Happy Friday to all! This week seemed to creep along for me and I am looking forward to some rest and relaxation. Here are some fun links to help you get through the day.
Perhaps this article excites me so much because I graduated from Emory’s Creative Writing program, but I think Natasha Tretheway’s poetry is genius (as does the Pulitzer board) and this interview is illuminating.
An interesting look at the Booker Prize.
As a Raymond Carver devotee I voted for the original stories to be published. (more…)
