1. Chester's Colorful Easter Eggs

With Easter fast approaching, I want to recommend this adorable picture book written and illustrated by Theresa Smythe.
Chester's Colorful Easter Eggs, is a delightful book that reinforces counting and color recognition skills while we watch Chester happily decorating and hiding rainbow colored eggs for his friends.

I asked Theresa how her book came into being and she explained that it was originally a sequel to her popular Christmas book, Snowbear's Christmas Countdown. The
idea was born from her childhood and how elaborate her family's egg decorating was-- an article
in a McCalls or Women's day magazine with Alice in Wonderland themed eggs still stands out in her mind.

When she initially developed her dummy book,  Snowbear starred in the show but it just wasn't feeling right for her. Next, she approached it with a quirky artistic pig named Maurice living in New York City. Although he was well received by Theresa's editors, Chester the rabbit, ultimately stole the show.  "Now it's hard to believe it started out with a bear, went to a pig and ended up a bunny. Because the bunny fits -- just like that!!! Everything is a stepping stone to get you from a to z ; nothing is wasted."

(I agree, nothing is wasted. I have my fingers crossed that Maurice will have a book of his own one day.)

I'm captivated by Theresa's richly textured cut paper style that feels as if the pieces can be pulled right off the page. Here is a fun example
of her process, click to enlarge...

Chester's Colorful Easter Eggs is a sweet treat to add to a little one's Easter basket. As well as a fun read aloud, this treasure will keep kids engaged visually as well as motivating a rainbow filled egg coloring activity!

Happy Easter!

3. 12 Things I Love

I came across this post by chance while Googling one of my images. I do that from time to time to check what's going on online regarding my illustrations and to make sure things are fine and no one is doing anything they are not supposed to.

Anyway, I found this post I did a few years back on the PBJ's and I decided to repost it here today. I think is ok to repost isn't it? I mean there is no law on no reposting your own posts is it? He he..

Anyway, here is a little about myself:

12 Things I Love

My morning coffee.

Stopping to smell the flowers.

Henrietta, my chicken.

My dogs.

Nutella!

Illustrating and painting with watercolor.

Listening to music.

Children's books!

Yoga..

Being outdoors.

The PBJ's..

. .and my family. :o)

How about you, what things do you love?

8. Are Ebook/Apps revolutionary? by Will Terry

"I get asked all the time if I think ebooks are a fad? If I think it's worth it to produce them? If I think making apps are better? How I found my programmers? Is it better to try to find an agent and get my book published traditionally? How I plan on marketing my apps? What should I do?

I'm flattered that so many would think I have the answers but the truth is that I'm just a dumb guy who fumbled his way into this industry and is now trying to figure out what my next moves will be.

But for what it's worth - here are my thoughts...."

10. Time Management

I know, I have my own little Fan club going for Will Terry but I couldn't pass up sharing his blog post this week on time management. Great subject.

My time management skills aren't great but I'm trying to get better. I'm juggling a few deadlines right now and I admit, it is overwhelming. I am fortunate that my kids are older now, so my time is my own and I have plenty of it. Believe it or not, though, I think I got more done when they were little because every minute of my time was scheduled. Okay, I know those with little ones don't want to read that. It is hard, very hard when they are small, no doubt. But when you do have the time, you can easily waste it away.

I liked Will's idea of using the ipad to sketch. I have one and could be utilizing it more. However, I do have my work space in the living room which I love because I'm in the hub of it all. For me that is an advantage because I can be with the family yet keep pressing on with the deadlines.

My biggest time eater is my addiction to, "Words With Friends", as I've mentioned before. I haven't stop playing, it still helps me decompress as I work, but I have edited my amount greatly. I used to have at least 20 games going at a time and now I have 3 or 4 which can take several days to finish (right, Gina?) . For me that is a vast improvement and a fair compromise.

My other time management tool? SLEEP. Yes, sleep. For years, I was trying to burn the candle at both ends trying to get everything done until I realized it was backfiring on me. I was always tired and it was fruitless. Instead I've tried to give up my night owl ways, go to bed. BINGO. I don't know why, but for me that has done the trick. I'm not taking several hours of coffee and self motivation speeches to get to work each day.

Anyway, be sure to read Will's blog post. It's always interesting and insightful to see how others handle their time. I still have a long way to go, but like the deadlines, it's a work in progress. :)

12. Publishing dates!

Hope everyone is having a great start to their summer. It is hot, hot, hot here and it looks like I will be spending most of my summer working. No complaints! I was on Amazon recently and noticed that a couple of books I wrote/illustrated for Dover have publishing dates now! These were a lot of fun to create so I'm happy to say that I'm working on a 4th book for them.

16. Little Bear- Maurice Sendak RIP

Maurice Sendak  1928- May 2012

Maurice Sendak is best known for “Where the Wild Things Are” but his illustrations for the Little Bear Series will always have a special place in my heart.  I remember reading these endearing books as a child but Little Bear became an integral part of life with the animated children’s television series. It was one of my son’s favorite program’s and I miss it running continuously in the background- what soothing sweetness and light it evoked.
Rest in peace, Maurice and when you see Kevvy, know you are with one of your biggest fans. J

18. Blog tool and coloring

Hi all!

This week I'm relearning how to work in Adobe Illustrator. I so rarely use this program that I forget the platform easily. After some suggestions from illustrator friends, I found these tutorials to be very helpful and thought I would pass it on. This shows how to do basic line and color fast and easy using the blob tool and live paint bucket.

The embedding of the link was disabled so you can check out the tutorials here and here.

These are through, "the virtual instructor" where you will find other free art lessons as well.

19. Draw Something

Hello...do you recognize me? I am the #1 pbjunkie slacker coming to post. Hope you all have been well. I have been working on some fun assignments and still multi tasking with my favorite game, Words With Friends.

But have you all heard of the new rage in gaming?

"Draw Something" can be played on your Androids, Iphones, Ipads etc and is a mix of the game board Pictionary and the word jumble from your newspaper.
You play with a friend or a random opponent, taking turns drawing clues to words and solving them.

(drawing provided as an example- from app store)

On your turn you choose from 3 levels of difficulty and then draw the word with your finger or stylus. You press "send" and your opponent watches a video of your brush strokes and must guess the word using your drawing. Also provided is a jumble of 12 letters which includes the letters of the word. After your opponent has solved (or passed) it is your turn to watch their video and solve the puzzle.

It's a very simple and easy to learn game--- so I've heard.

I haven't started playing yet but my fingers are itching to try. I have stuck with wwf telling myself that if I'm drawing, I should be "working". But the flip side -what a fun way to exercise your drawing muscles without the restrictions of a deadline. A warm up if you will.
Yeah, I like that justification better. ;0)

I have always thought of myself primarily as an illustrator and have illustrated a book, Cats for Golden Books and educational books for Evan Moore Publications. I do a lot of illustration for licensing for products as well.

It had been suggested by an editor a while back that I try writing. I joined a wonderful critique group and learned a great deal from them. I have a huge respect for good writers which has grown tremendously since I started putting pen to paper. I have a much easier time with the images than the words. It is more of a struggle to get it just right. I am grateful to my writer's group for really helping me hone the words.

I usually start with an idea. In some cases I have the characters and the story line in my head like a little movie. I start by doing little thumbnail drawings and putting the words to them. It is an evolutionary process. I am inspired by how children think and interact. I really try to create something that I think they would really like and relate to.

I don't know what I would change about the business. It seems that right now the business is being turned on it's head by all the changes that are happening. I think I would want to continue to see good writing and good art on what is being produced. I love books and there are so many talented individuals that my collection of favorites continues to grow. I do love having a book in hand that I can turn the pages of, so I hope that format doesn't totally go away.

My books- Friends, Amanda and Max. It is a picture book for 3-6 year olds. It's about a big orange tabby cat and a wee dachshund pup exploring what it is to be a friend. I have it on Barnes and Noble and Amazon for $.99. Amanda and Max also have a blog with free coloring pages and paper dolls for kids to download. htt

My name is Mandy France and I am children's book illustrator. I work
part time as a graphic designer for the Walt Disney Company in Florida
and the rest of my time is spent illustrating in my studio at home.
What inspires me most is travel. Whether I actually travel someplace
new, read about exotic lands, or watch a documentary, I am truly
inspired by travel. It's just something about new places and spaces
that get my creative juices flowing. When I think of traveling to
distant lands, I just want to get my sketchbook out and start drawing.
My husband and I trekked the Inca Trail in Peru this past September,
and when I got back I filled 3 sketchbooks!

I do all of my illustrations digitally using my Cintiq. I have been
painting in oils and acrylic for years, but now that I have moved to
the digital realm, I feel like I have a lot more options with my
painting style. I paint in Photoshop and I never have to wash my
brushes or figure out a way to store my unused paint! And did I
mention the undo button?

There are a lot of ups and downs in this field of work. I'm a rather
new illustrator, so trying to find an agent and sending samples to
publishers takes up most of my time. Something that has really helped
my transition from graphic designer to illustrator has been joining
SCBW: The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. I
recently returned from the SCBWI conference in New York City where I
met a lot of fantastic illustrators and au

Meet Kristi Valiant!

Lean in and I'll tell you a secret. Digital illustrating has come a long way, baby!

Years ago in art school I took a digital illustration class and learned that 1990s-airbrushy-absolutely-made-with-a-computer illustration style. Now I work completely digitally and some of my art directors have no idea that I do so. It's so much faster to move around my characters, resize, and play with color on my computer than if I were to use regular art supplies. And I don't have to worry about my toddler, or more likely clumsy me, knocking my dirty painting water over.

I'm blessed to be illustrating a fun series of chapter books for Random House right now called LITTLE WINGS about Willa Bean, a cupid with a crazy mess of curls. When I visited Random House in New York, I had a hard time convincing one person that all the illustrations were indeed drawn on my computer. My publisher for a picture book called CORA COOKS PANCIT didn't realize that I created all the illustrations digitally until she read an interview I did after the book was out.

How do I make even my sketches look like they were drawn with a real pencil? By customizing Photoshop brushes and using a tablet and pen instead of a mouse. The pencil tool in Photoshop is abysmal. Instead of that, open the Brushes palette, choose a brush with some grit to it, size it down to a pencil line (I use 8 to 12 points), and play with the Shape Dynamics, Texture, and Other Dynamics. I like to control both my Size Jitter and Opacity Jitter with my Pen Pressure. There are also a host of free Photoshop brushes online to download. But even those I play around with in the Brushes palette to make them my own. If you get a hankering to give it a try, there are also loads of YouTube videos to watch for technique hints.

Hope you enjoyed my geeking out post about digital illustration.

23. Book done!

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. This week I completed my 3rd book for Dover, a 65 page activity book that I have written and illustrated.

I had a very hard time getting started on it but once I did, it was great fun!

I have literally spent months sitting here with my 3 favorite things-
Photoshop, Netflix and Words With Friends. Draw a little, play a few tiles, "listen" to something good.

Awww, Netflix, I heart you. I completed the " A Touch of Frost" series, then started "Midsomer Murders". I have 12 seasons to go through of this lighthearted British murder mystery series, so you know what I will be watching through my next project.

And there is a "next" project, I'm tickled to say. Dover has hired me for a fourth book. This one will be less pages and more focused on illustrations. I'm rolling right into that project so you know where I will be. Right here at my desk!

And heck- if you want to keep me company, look me up on Words with Friends. I'm always up for a game! ;o)

Our first guest!
Meet Jane Heinrichs:

Hello readers! I'm Jane Heinrichs and I'm a globe-trotting children's book writer and illustrator. I grew up in Canada, studied in England, and now I’m living in South Africa with my husband.

The one thing I love about working in children’s books is the ability to open young minds to all sorts of new and exciting ideas. Children are more able to suspend disbelief than adults, and as a result, so much more is possible (rather than impossible) in their world.

For the past year I’ve been working to illustrate new curriculum picture books in South Africa. This has been an amazing challenge. The absolute key to the survival of South Africa is the education of the next generation. These books will go into every elementary school, and hopefully inspire a whole new generation of children. A tall order for an illustrator!

It’s been such a rewarding and challenging project, and I so happy I was invited to be involved.

I do all my illustration work from my studio at home, which overlooks our garden courtyard. When I’m stuck for an idea I look out the window to the top of Table Mountain and inspiration always returns.

Since I work from home most of the day, I love to read blogs and chat with other illustrators via Twitter. It’s like a window on the world from my small studio in Africa. Please drop me a line, or pop my blog to say hello!

X
Jane
