3. A-Ha!

Remember this song?

I tear up every time I watch this video. It’s the love, the determination to be together, THAT’S what it’s all about. THAT’S what I want to portray in my stories.

They don’t make videos like this anymore. :(

8. Song of the Week - #13

I love music. I love unknown musicians. I post a song from an unknown musician every week. Support your local musicians, won’t you?

This is from the electronic genre. I have a “thing” for dance music. It soothes me and sort of blends into my background so that I can concentrate on other things. It also energizes me when I’m feeling sluggish.

I like this one. It’s exotic and sounds mysterious.

Song of the Week:

Album description:

An electronic album with an exotic and sensual flavor. A film score without the movie. Somewhere between Enigma and Prodigy.

10. Whatever and Blah

Afternoon all,

Here’s another audio entry. You can hear me chewing a pretzel in your ear. Doesn’t that make you want to listen? lol

(Click the arrow to play
Length: 6.39)

If you don’t feel like listening, you can read about it below. Just click the “more” button.

Hope your Monday is going well!

**UPDATE: MK didn’t find out if he made jazz band today. For some reason, they delayed the announcement until tomorrow. I wonder if this means they are having a hard time deciding? More later …

Howdy ho, bloggerettes.

I was going to write something meaningful today but I’m not feeling in a very philosophical mood today. In fact, if you will note the little punkymood girl in the sidebar, I’m feeling pretty “whatever” today. It’s going to rain? Whatever. I need to get the chili on for dinner tonight? Whatever. If I don’t make it, then we’ll have fish.

I don’t have an idea for NaNoWriMo yet? Whatever. I’ll find something. My laptop has a Trojan? Whatever. I’ll just reformat, no biggie. And on it goes.

I’m currently eating my lunch – a pretzel. Can you hear me chomping? (chompchompchomp). Sorry, I won’t chew in your ear anymore. I’m sure there are some kids out there going – “Ommm, she’s not supposed to do that. How rude!”

And you’re right kids, it IS rude. My apologizes. I’m so disgusting, especially when I’m bored.

I have most of my emails caught up, so far, and I’m left sitting here, lost in space and daydreaming about two things:

1. our house

and

2. NaNoWriMo

First our house. The hubs and I went shopping this past weekend. We have decided to redo our front bathroom. The décor is roughly six years old and the paint looks nasty – sort of a mustard-y look. We’re sick of looking at it and it just looks grody in there. So, we went to JCPenney’s home store and bought a new shower curtain. Which is cool, because now I have my focal point. Remember it’s all about the focal point for me. The shower curtain is well, here, let’s see if I can find a link to it. Er, no, I couldn’t find a link. Okay, so picture this – it has palm trees on it and is a sage/khaki sort of color. Clear as mud? Anyway, I love it. And I bought some dark green towels and a chocolate bathmat and we’re going to paint the walls the same color as the shower curtain and we’re changing the light fixture … well, I’ll post some before and after pictures because I suck at this explaining thing.

I need to find some pictures for the walls. Swell. I hate shopping for art because I never find anything. But we’ll need something for the walls – some sort of beach-y theme thing.

Enough about the decorating thing. I know that must bore ya’ll but it’s been on my mind a lot lately. And please don’t think I’m a Martha Stewart or anything – not that there’s anything wrong with that – but it’s not my cup o’ tea, let’s put it that way. The only time I ever think of doing anything to the house is when we host Thanksgiving dinner for my in-laws because they intimidate me and have great taste and though they deny it, I know they are looking at my house thinking, “I so would not have put that there,” or “those colors .. what was she thinking??”

Moving on …

NaNoWriMo. I turned on my laptop yesterday, for the first time in weeks, to see if my 2006 project was on there. It was. And it’s not that bad, quite frankly. At least, the parts I read. But in the process of looking up the project, my virus scan thing kicked in and before long I had one of those dreaded little notice boxes pop up in upper left-hand corner of the window. I had a virus. A Trojan, no doubt. Dang it. It was some sort of ad/clicker thing and though it tossed it in quarantine, I knew it wouldn’t do any good. Once you get a Trojan, it’s pretty impossible to get rid of them entirely. So, I spent a few hours last night reformatting my laptop. Even though getting viruses is a major pain in the butt, it’s sort of a good thing (did you hear that hackers? You’re actually doing me a favor, you slime buckets) because it gives me an excuse to clean all of the crap off and start over with a clean slate.

So, my laptop is running like new again and I’m all set to tuck that baby under my arm and hole up in Barnes and Noble somewhere and write my fingers to the bone. Only, of course I won’t do that because I have to have it completely quiet when I write. But that’s neither here nor there.

Ideas. I don’t have any. But I will. I’m actively looking and I’ll find something. And I’ll have the first few chapters outlined out before I start thing in seventeen days. I’m not nervous, but I am feeling anxious. Anxious and antsy – I’m ready to get started. Which doesn’t make any sense considering I’m not ready. But when have I ever made sense?

The boys and I drove to Mt. Vernon, Missouri this past weekend to attend the Apple Butter Makin’ Days with my mom. She’s a huge craft nut and really looks forward to visiting all of the craft fairs this time of year. The boys were actually okay with going – I think they were looking forward to just getting out of the house for a bit, and it was fun to hang out with my mom, who always makes the boys smile and laugh (which is more than I can do nowadays), but after walking around and looking at crafts for an hour, we were done. My mom, however, was just getting started. Luckily, we had taken two cars so we were able to leave her there and drool over all of the goodies.

MK is supposed to find out if he made jazz band today. I’ll post an update later after I pick him up. I really want that boy to make it. I think he would be so good and think of all of the neat experiences he’ll have! I still think it’s so cool that he tried out at all. I never really had the guts to do anything like that when I was his age. Then again, I was like GD – I didn’t really DO anything outside of homework and read.

Man, I’m in a blah mood today. I can’t seem to get worked up over anything. Is the calm before the storm? Knowing me? Probably. I’m going to sign off now. I’m craving a white chocolate mocha from Starbucks. Anyone want to go with? Well, get your shoes on and let’s go – I’ll be in the car.

14. Three Word Wednesday - A Mismatched Pair

null

Bone, at If You Only Read One Blog This Year, has challenged us to write a story using these three words: Feather, Misplaced, Useless

Here’s what I came up with:

A Mismatched Pair

Listen to the audio version

(Click the arrow to play)

“So, are we on for tonight?”

“I don’t know. Let me call Brian and find out.”

Ginger reached into her Louis Vuitton blue bag and dug out her cell phone. She made sure Vicki could see the designer label. Of course, it was actually a fake, a very good fake, but as long as Vicki didn’t sneak a peek at the lining, she would never know. Finding the phone, Ginger flipped it open, pressed 2 on her keypad and waited for Brian to pick up.

“Cute bag.”

“Oh, you think?” Ginger shrugged her shoulder to make the bag bounce a bit. She feigned a nonchalant shrug and smiled. “Brian gave this to me last month for … Oh, hi honey.” She smiled at Vicki and twisted her body away to give her the illusion she was actually somewhere private instead of on a busy city sidewalk at lunchtime.

“How’s your day going?” She paused to wait for Brian’s response, a plastic smile still glued to her lips. “Well, I know you’re busy … I’m sorry to bother you … well no, this isn’t an emergency …” She glanced over her shoulder to see if Vicki was listening.

She was.

“Well, it’s just that … oh sure. I can understand that … yes, I remember what we talked about …” She cleared her throat and rolled her eyes at Vicki as if to say, “Men. You can’t kill them and get away with it anymore.”

Her friend nodded once and then quickly averted her gaze. She seemed embarrassed for her and that suddenly made Ginger very angry.

“Look,” she said through gritted teeth and interrupted her boyfriend’s scolding. “I just need to know if we’re still hanging out with Vicki and Race … yes, I know that’s not really his name, but he’s insisting we call him that because … okay, fine.” She released a long, frustrated sigh and continued, “Randy. Are we still hanging out with Vicki and Randy tonight?”

Vicki tapped her on the shoulder and indicated that she was successful in hailing a cab.

“Right. Tonight. No. Your presentation is tomorrow night, not tonight.” She paused, the phone glued to her ear as she followed Vicki into the cab. “What do you mean I never listen? I heard you very clearly, your presentation is on Thursday, October 4th …”

The women settled themselves into the cab. Vicki leaned forward to give the driver the address of the restaurant and Ginger’s gaze zeroed in on the tag dangling from the back of Vicki’s expensive sweater. She really should say something to her friend, but she knew she wouldn’t. She refrained from smiling at the thought of how upset her perfect friend would be tonight when she realized she had run around town all day with her tag showing.

“What do you mean today is Thursday?”

Vicki settled back and nodded in confirmation.

Ginger mouthed an expletive and winced at Brian’s harsh tone. He then proceeded to call her a very unflattering name shortly before hanging up on her. She swallowed and shot another uneasy look at her friend. Vicki was seemingly staring out of the window but she knew she was listening to every word.

“Oh well, then. My bad.” She forced a laugh and pretended to continue with her conversation. “So, I take it that’s a no?” She nervously plucked at the hem of her ivory Banana Republic skirt. She stiffened as she sensed Vicki’s impatience next to her. “Brian? Brian?” She pounded the phone a bit as if by sheer force, she could fix the phone’s reception. “I lost the signal.” Ginger shrugged and flipped the phone shut with a decisive click. “Stupid phone. It’s useless.” She dropped the electronic gadget back into her bag.

“What happened to your black, skinny phone?”

“Oh? The Razor?” She blushed and chuckled softly. “I, um, ‘misplaced’ it.” She put signed quotation marks around the word misplaced.

“Ah.” Vicki just nodded and offered a sympathetic smile. “I know all about those misplaced accidents.”

She chuckled and assumed a sheepish air. “Well, they’re so damn small. How’s a girl expected to keep track of them all the time?”

“Exactly.” Vicki crossed her arms and Ginger couldn’t help but notice how the bronze threads in her Prada sweater shimmered in the sunlight. Her eyes grazed over the adornments on her very expensive sweater. Who else could get away with wearing feathers on her shoulders? “So, are you guys going to the party with us tonight, or what?”

Ginger blinked her companion back into focus. She did NOT envy this woman. Sure, she was beautiful, fit, had killer clothes, a husband who adored her and the coveted corner office. Forget it. Who was she trying to fool? She was jealous. She was so jealous her fingernails were actually tinged green. Why couldn’t she live a charmed life? Why did she even hang around with Vicki? She always felt like crap afterward, her self-esteem plummeted and she found it hard to get up in the mornings knowing she would have to face her yet again. She should stop hanging out with her. She WOULD stop hanging out with her. She was destructive and so out of her league.

“Absolutely. I wouldn’t miss it for anything.” She said with a sunny smile and false enthusiasm.

16. Three Word Wednesday - A Smell to Remember

Bone, at If You Only Read One Blog This Year, has challenged us to write a story using these three words: Caught, Eager, Perfume

Here’s what I came up with:

A Smell to Remember

Listen to the audio version

(Click the arrow to play)

He pressed his ear to the door and listened to the cackle of various girls as they walked by the doom room. He licked his lips in anticipation as he pictured all sorts of females, tall, short, black, white, blondes, brunettes and redheads, walk down the hallway. He allowed his imagination to run wild and conjured up various modes of dress, or undress. Those visuals caused his breathing to quicken. It really didn’t matter to him what they looked like, not really – he loved them all.

But there was one in particular that he continued to dream about at night. He held her scarf up to his nose and breathed deeply. Her scent was simply intoxicating. Her smell went beyond the sexy, musky scent of perfume, there was something more, something he couldn’t quite put his finger on, but it drove him mad. He had to get closer. He had to define, and analyze, her very essence.

His grip tightened on the expensive silk scarf and he held his breath as he sensed a presence just on the other side of that thin, wooden door.

“Is Julia back from class yet?”

He jumped at the girl’s voice. She was close, so very close. He could open the door and simply touch her. The thought excited him and he clamped his lips shut to quell his heavy breathing.

“I don’t think so. But she should be back any time. I think her class gets out at 8:00.”

He glanced at the monster clock on Julia’s bedside table. The blood red digits read 7:56.

“Crap.”

“What’s wrong?”

He heard the other girl pause just outside the door. Though he didn’t recognize the voices, he pictured what the girls might look like in his mind.

“I need to borrow her algebra notes.”

“Why weren’t you in class?”

The first girl giggled. Her voice came out low, mischievous. “Carl.”

“Ah. Say no more.”

He had no idea who the girls were talking about and suddenly, he didn’t care to hear anymore. He felt a surge of impatience tickle the back of his throat and he glanced at the clock once more.

7:57.

“Well anyway … if you catch Julia, tell her I’m looking for her?”

“Will do.”

“Cool. See you later.”

The girls separated and he exhaled in relief. He didn’t wish an audience when he talked to Julia.

He wound Julia’s scarf around his neck and leaned back against the door. He crossed his arms and idly looked around her room. He had been in Julia’s room so many times he knew the place blindfolded. Her closet was to his left. He had spent countless hours touching, and sniffing her clothing. In some far back corner of his mind, he knew his obsession with Julia was wrong, but he couldn’t help himself. There was something about her.

He smiled as he pictured her long reddish-brown hair. He loved the way the sunlight caressed the strands in late afternoon. He loved how it almost appeared copper in the early morning fog. He didn’t like it when she tied her hair back. It somehow felt wrong to harness all of that free-flowing beauty.

She had her hair tied back when they bumped into each other. It really had been a total accident. He had just left the Powell building and was thinking about how he would break into her dorm room that night to borrow her scarf when he turned a corner and there she had been. His fingers tightened around material at the memory.

“Oh!” She had exclaimed in surprise.

He had been so taken aback at actually being that close to her that he had been unable to say anything.

She had stood there, reshuffling her books and notebooks while waiting for him to say something.

He had nothing to say. He simply breathed her in.

She had begun to frown as the silence stretched into long, awkward seconds.

He could nothing but stare at her. He had never been this close to her before. Her skin … was perfect. Her lips were neither too thick, nor too thin. He had guessed her eyes were green, but he was wrong. They were light brown, with dark green flecks sprinkled around her iris.

“Um, excuse you.” Her voice was harsh, almost abrasive, and he had frowned because the voice didn’t match her outward beauty.

She had brushed past him. And he simply allowed her to escape.

She would not escape this time.

He glanced at the clock. 8:02. She would arrive any time. She always left class right on time. She would hurry back to her room, unload her books, change clothes, brush her long, beautiful hair, freshen her makeup and hurry back out to party with her friends.

He knew her routine. He had watched her many times from under her bed.

8:03 Where was she? He was eager to see her, to be around her, soak up her presence. He grasped both ends of the scarf and pulled. The thin material stretched and released more of Julia’s scent. He inhaled to appreciate the smell, and froze.

The hairs on the back of his neck stood straight up as he listened to a voice, a faint voice, in the hallway. He knew that voice.

He quickly moved to the other side of the room and plopped down on the pink and purple beanbag chair. He would act nonchalant. He would act like he belonged in her room. Indeed, after she got to know him, he WOULD belong in her room.

He crossed his ankles, assumed a casual pose and waited to be caught.

This short story was inspired by the movie “Perfume.” It’s a dark, rather disturbing, movie about obsession, murder, and the power of scent. Here’s a link to the movie trailer if you’re interested.

17. A Sample of the Hubs Playing

This is an example of some of my husband’s original music. Every instrument you hear in this song was generated by him. Most of them are from his keyboard, the drums are from him playing a small drum set, and of course, the guitar is all him. Listen carefully, there are a lot of neat chords from the string section. And don’t forget to listen to his guitar solo toward the end.

Can you tell I’m very proud of him?

This is called “Feel the Rain.”

18. Song of the Week #8

The hubs’ first gig didn’t go as expected. About half of the songs they played, they were spot on. The other half? Not so much. They also had some problems with their sound system - it crackled and generally sounded bad. He came home feeling both excited and disappointed. But it was good the band had this opportunity to practice in front of a live crowd. Now they have a better idea of what they need to work on and will be more prepared for their next gig.

I admire his courage. It’s not easy entertaining people.

I love music. I love unknown musicians. I post a song from an unknown musician every week. Support your local musicians, won’t you?

21. Song of the Week #5

My husband is a musician. And I was wrong, his first gig wasn’t on Friday, it’s September 14th. They are playing at a tavern in Strafford, Missouri. So if you’re in the area, drop in and cheer them on, won’t you?

I designed their website. I have to say, I’ve been having a GREAT time playing around with this website. This is the first time I’ve gotten a contact form to actually work with a php script - it’s just a matter of time before I learn more, isn’t that a scary thought? *grin* And I also have to say, I think their website looks sexy, in a dark and dangerous way. ;)

midnitethunder.com

The band is called Midnite Thunder and they rock. The hubs plays the electric guitar and is sounding mighty fine. In fact, this is the best he’s ever played, quite frankly. He’s been working very hard to catch up on the songs and his hard work is paying off. I’ll post a sample of their music soon.

I have a softspot for up and coming musicians. I post a Song of the Week from Sonific Songs every week at Blog Talkers - I’d also like to post the song over here, too. These songs will be all over the genre charts: rock, pop, electronic, new age, jazz, blues, country. These are all songs that had that special something that caught my attention. Perhaps you’ll discover a new talent, too. Perhaps listening to new music from unknowns will expand your horizons and your mind. Perhaps it will inspire the artistic part of your brain.

I also post a daily comic strip from Baby Blues. Life is tough - take a moment and laugh, won’t you? :D

22. Song of the Week #4

My husband is a musician. His first gig is this coming Friday. He’s pretty nervous about playing on stage again. The last time was in 1992. It’s a relatively small gig and one the members are considering a good “practice” gig. I have every intention of going to support him (and to fight off the screaming females, of course). We reserved the band’s domain name the other day, you can keep track of my husband’s gigs at midnitethunder.com. I’m currently working on gathering ideas for their banner - no easy feat considering the name implies something intangible. Any ideas?

I have a softspot for up and coming musicians. I post a Song of the Week from Sonific Songs every week at Blog Talkers - I’d also like to post the song over here, too. These songs will be all over the genre charts: rock, pop, electronic, new age, jazz, blues, country. These are all songs that had that special something that caught my attention. Perhaps you’ll discover a new talent, too. Perhaps listening to new music from unknowns will expand your horizons and your mind. Perhaps it will inspire the artistic part of your brain.

That has to be a good thing, right? Please support your local musicians. :)

My husband is a musician. He’s currently working very hard on learning songs for the new band he just joined. (I’ll most likely design their band website - when it’s ready, I’ll let ya’ll know). Their first scheduled gig is sometime next month.

As a result, I have a softspot for up and coming musicians. I post a Song of the Week from Sonific Songs every week at Blog Talkers - I’d also like to post the song over here, too.
