1. best town on earth, again

My daughter let me know the link to “The Best Town on Earth” video in an earlier post didn’t work, so we’ll try it another way.

The Best Town on Earth

We survived the strongest tornado to hit the United States in 2005.

We didn’t let the 2009 ice storm of the century get us down, either.

We’re small, but strong!

2. biking to save the children

Today I met three men who are on a cross-country bike ride to raise money for The City of the Children, a Mexican orphanage.

Please take time to read their story on their Web site. They are three extraordinary individuals with numerous achievements to their credit; yet to them, this bike ride is one of the most important things they’ve ever done in their lives.

Their concern for these orphans is genuine, and the friendships they share with one another are real and deep.

Days like today — when I get to tell the story of people like John Shinsky, Eljay Bowron and Joe DeLamielleure, and the cause to which they are so committed  – make me thankful that I’m a writer and can tell their story.

3. a small success

After weeks of avoiding yummy things (as in foods that are deep-fried or smothered in chocolate) I finally was able to step into, zip up, and button the waist of a pair of khakis I haven’t been able to fit into since September.

Yes!

I have fallen off the wagon a few times, but have climbed back on, though grumbling and grouching about it the whole way. I still have some pounds to go but today’s milestone should keep me motivated for a while.

4. Really Cool Stuff, Part II

Hi. I’m Patricia. I’m addicted to Kellogg’s low fat brown sugar cinnamon Pop-Tarts.

pop tarts!

I eat them for dessert, or for a snack, or whenever. I buy several boxes at a time for fear of running out. I don’t know why I love them, but I do.

Bandit, my cat, likes them too. I usually have to share a pinch or two of the crust with him because if he sees I’m eating one, he jumps in my lap and pushes himself between me and the Pop Tart.

5. Really cool stuff, part I

Welcome to the first installment of Really Cool Stuff, where you will learn a) about stuff I think is really cool, b) why I think it is cool, and c) how to use Roman numerals correctly. (That’s because all RCS posts will be assigned a Roman numeral. I can’t wait to get to the Cs, Ms, and Xs!)

The reason I can’t call these posts My Favorite Things is because a very nice and famous person has already claimed that phrase (Oprah), and the reason I don’t call these posts Good Things is because that’s been taken also (by Martha Stewart). Besides, RCS fits my personality. I overuse adverbs, I have been known to use the word ”cool” too often, and refer to everything as ”stuff.”

Just want to remind everyone: I’m not endorsing any products, just telling you what I like!

So what gets the honor of the first post in the RCS category? (Warning: If you’re a guy, you may not enjoy this post so much.) Drum roll … ahem … I mean, purrrrr please …

Meow Cosmetics!

A couple of months ago, I decided to make the change from liquid foundation to mineral makeup. I did a lot of research, trying to find the brand I thought would be the best.

Not only did I read great reviews about Meow, when I went to their website I immediately fell in love with their campy kitty theme. Yes, I’m a sucker for anything with whiskers, four paws and a purr.

Meow lets you order small baggies of sample colors for 1.00 each. They have 60-plus shades of foundation, plus numerous shades of blush, eyeshadow, etc. The baggie-size samples last for several days if you’re careful. They are a great way to test the colors to see which ones fit you best.

I ordered four foundation colors that looked closest to my color. All four appeared OK, but one matched best; I am a “Sleek Sphynx” foundation shade. The Meow gals also send one or two freebies along for you to try, which is fun.

So, I ordered a jar of foundation, a jar of concealer in the same shade, blush, and finishing powder. I LOVE using mineral makeup. It’s so easy to apply, the coverage (especially with the concealer) is so much better than what I used to wear, and my face doesn’t feel like I’m wearing a mask.

Honestly, I was getting to the point where I hated to wear makeup. Now I love wearing makeup again!

So here’s to Meow Cosmetics, the first on my list of Really Cool Stuff for 2008!
