1. Oscar-Winner Daniel Greaves Wants to Kickstart “Mr. Plastimime”

Winning an Oscar for best animated short can do many things for a filmmaker’s career, but it does not guarantee an endless stream of funding for the remainder of their lives. That is why Oscar-winning English director Daniel Greaves has turned to Kickstarter to fund his next project Mr. Plastimime. Greaves and London-based Tandem Films are asking for £33,450 (approx. $51,000). They have reached more than two-thirds of their goal with less than a week left in the campaign.

Greaves won the Oscar in 1992 for his short film Manipulation:

His new short Mr. Plastimime mixes clay animation with hand-drawn facial expressions and CG backgrounds. Greaves often mixes animation techniques in his work, such as in his well-received short Flatworld:

The rewards packages are well considered, and include artwork from the earlier films Manipulation and Flatworld. The new short Mr. Plastimime also appears to be well into production at this point. The project updates on Kickstarter show an impressive amount of visual development and dedicated craftsmanship, including hand-animated pencil tests by Greaves.

2. Little Joyful Things

Abstract patterns in the season's first snow flurries:

The sound of a babbling brook on a cold, clear morning:

A birdhouse bursting with last spring's nest:

Loads of dry firewood neatly stacked:

Ragweed, frozen at last!:

What makes you feel joyful?

"Kitties 'n' Cream"

Acrylic and collage on wood board

This is the perfect subject for me this week. Five tiny acrylic and collage paintings that I've created will be a part of a "small works" art show which is opening this Friday November 14 at Custom Art Framing and Gallery 9 in Norwood, MA. I posted another of the paintings for Illustration Friday this week, and I may just post one or two more this week on my blog to tease the show! :)

7. Moonflowers

Have you ever seen these before? They are called Moonflowers. A friend gave me some seeds a few years ago and I planted them to see what would happen. What happened was they went crazy.

They bloom in the evening, and stay open until early morning. If you're patient, you can actually watch the petals unfold over the course of a few minutes. They have an exquisite smell, but are extremely poisonous. So don't eat them!

I've let them grow wild along part of the fence by the road, where I have my sorely neglected "cottage garden." My futile attempt to make it so beautiful that cars would have to slow down. Ha, good luck, Jen! I'm not sure what will slow people down these days... Read the rest of this post

10. Big big news

I have some great news that I can finally share! I now have children's illustration representation in the form of the fabulous group at Tugeau 2. I am so proud to be repped by them. I'm not going to publicly gush here, but let's just say that I am, in a word, completely thrilled (okay that's two words). I hope you will join me in my celebration of this momentous happening. You can check out my work and profile on Team Tugeau's web site, here.

11. IF : Little Things

So many images come to mind for this topic~some are whimsical, while others are just quiet observations.
I get most of my inspiration from nature. I love trees. I draw them, paint them, photograph them~can't get enough of them. If the old, stately trees could talk, imagine the history they'd share. The younger trees are just starting out, reaching towards the sky with so much hope and promise. Not much different from us in many ways.
I love the way the same tree looks so different in morning light as compared to dusk. It's these seemingly little things that are huge to me.
It's the little things that make up the big picture.
Be sure to check out my entry for this topic in my Moleskine!

12. Quick Watercolor Sketch - Garden

My brother was kind enough to send along a surprise present. I was beyond excited about this amazing little travel box. The 'cap' of the box fits in a groove to form the water holder, the white bottle on the right, which stores water, also forms a palette when placed on it's side, and to top it off, a foldable brush!

Winsor and Newton Artist's Field Box

Recently I made myself even more mobile with these:

Niji Water Brush
You store water right in the brush - squeeze the base to push it out. I painted the above quick painting on my moleskine journal with the middle sized brush while standing and waiting for a friend to pick out flowers at the flower shop.
