My neighbor dropped these by today. Aren't they beautiful? I'd love to draw them, but not sure I'll have time. Maybe I'll take good photo ref and do them later.
I'm always impressed with people who grow vegetables. That's one thing I've never done. Never had the urge. I guess because living here there's so much readily available in stores or farmer's markets that I've become spoiled. Also, here, I'd have to dig up flowers or lawn to "do" veggies, so I think that's a good enough excuse not to.
And here's part of what's on my drawing table. A new self promo piece. This is a tracing over a tracing over I think a rough sketch, that's why its so messy looking. I still like to draw the old fashioned way, with my black Polychromo pencil on tracing paper, rather than doing sketches digitally. Some of us will never change I guess.
My turkey is still here! She (I've determined she's a hen) comes and hangs out for several hours every day.
Other neighbors have spotted her too, so she's making the rounds. I have no idea where she came from or what her story is, but she's a sweet thing and except for all the poop, she's a love. The cats find her sort of entertaining, but are pretty much over the novelty of having a turkey in the yard. And she leaves them alone too, so its all good. Today Isabella and the bird were hanging out on the back porch together, it was pretty cute.
I'm going to chain myself to my drawing table this weekend, mostly. What are all of you doing?

Lovely pencil sketch! I'm another of the old fashioned ones who will never change.
Please do take a picture of the vegetables and draw them sometime. I would love to see your finished drawing of them and please let us see the finished drawing of your promo piece. I have enjoyed keeping up with "your" turkey! I too will be drawing all day. I am working on pencil drawings of little snippets of gardens. I want to complete 12 of them for my gallery show in September. So far 8are finished.
Thanks Anni! Yay, another dinosaur.
Melissa, I hope you post your garden drawings on your blog. I will definitely do my veggies at some point (before they get eaten!) They're too pretty not to.
A few years ago I asked our mutual old friend from school if not working digitally meant I was a dinosaur. I'm sure you'll recognize the "voice", and I loved the answer:
"I think we need to reserve the 'magic' of our process and keep it special--at least that's what I do. It’s harder. . . but people only value the skills they don't have. Using Photoshop devalues the process in most cases. And most arguments [are] based on the idea that you need to do it to be competitive.
I am not an illustrator because I want to sit in front of a screen. And believe me, computer skills are nothing nowadays. I had Photoshop long before it was commercially available, and I used it then (1989-ish) on a primitive system. I did some of the first-ever digital illustrations used on book covers. I decided that in the long run, everyone would be using it and it was better to rely on my skills and training which was going to be abandoned to stay competitive . . . Because of the demand for faster delivery times, I have tried to learn to paint fast. I do things now in an hour that took me days or weeks before; but I do them by hand.
To answer your question, I may be a dinosaur, but I am an evolved carnivore that will eat the weak ones. Photoshop makes you weak in most cases."
