This is from an educational book I finished this year that will be out in the Fall. These two girls were so fun to paint and show together, over time, facing challenges. I remember being this age and how important my friends were to me, and not surprisingly, how important they are to me still.

 

I'm now taking registration for the next session of my online class: Writing Children's Nonfiction Books for the Educational Market.  In this class, you will learn about the educational market and how it differs from the trade market. You will learn how to put together an introductory packet to send to publishers. We'll work on the various components of that packet so that by the end of the month, you have packets ready to pop in the mail. You'll also learn how to deal with some of the practical issues of educational writers: research, dealing with editors, finding expert consultants, etc. Then, once the class is over, you can join (if you like) the "post-grad" blog community The Guppy Pond (members only), where you can continue to chat and get feedback from other writers hoping to or starting to write for the educational market.

My first session, back in January, filled up and had a waiting list. This session is partially filled already with people from that waiting list, but there are still some spots open.

I've enjoyed teaching for the Loft Literary Center and the Institute of Children's Literature and speaking at various SCBWI conferences over the years. I really like teaching (in fact, I sometimes still miss being in the 8th-grade classroom), and it's something I think I'm good at.

I'm in the middle of teaching a month-long online course on Writing Children's Nonfiction Books for the Educational Market, and it's going well. The writers in the class are talented, enthusiastic, curious, and hard-working. I predict I'll be seeing their bylines in educational market catalogs before too very long.

In Feb/Mar, I'll be teaching a couple of poetry workshops online. 

One, Getting to a Poem: For Brand New Poets, is a week-long workshop. 

The other, The Line Forms Here: Writing Poetry for Kids and Teens, is four weeks long.
