Issue one of Stymie Magazine, edited by Erik Smetana and containing my story The Flat-Packed Golfer is now available to read online for free, and you can flip the pages over like a real magazine – how cool is that?
In other news – I just crossed the 20,000 word mark on Theatre of Curious Acts with these words:
The dragons skittered about their ankles leaving scorch marks on their uniforms and setting Harvey’s shoelaces alight. The man jumped down into the sludge to put himself out. The dragons rolled onto their backs and released a sound akin to laughter.
Here's an unusual new magazine for you. Erik Smetana is putting together a magazine with the excellent title, Stymie.
Now don't let the golf theme put you off, in fact let it inspire you. Here are the fiction guidelines:
We want fiction, we crave it. We want mystery, lit fic, noir, humor, spec fic, whatever -- just so long as it (your submission) somehow involves golf. We have a penchant for flash fiction and would prefer nothing over 3000 words.
You can read an interview with Erik over at A J Brown's blog.
Oh, and talking of things golf related, and to get you in the golfing mood (I think someone mixed lawn feed with my morning cereal,) check out Back Spin by the fantabulous Harlan Coben. Despite being a horror writer, my favourite author writes thrillers. I'm sure there's a rule against that somewhere, but rules were made to broken.
Oh, and as a side note: Erik designed the above 'The Poisoned Apple' banner... The one I had before was, well... Crap!
"In the winter you come to the pit to warm your feet in the tar. You stand long enough to sink as far as your ankles - the littler you are, the longer you can stand. . . But in summer, like this day, you keep away from the tar . . . Ikky was tal
Congratulations-- both on the story (I really do need that for my golfer-husband, don't I?) and on the 20k mark. Those are some pretty cool words for such a landmark, too :D
HAHA. Okay just read it. Cate, you are made of awesome <3
A zillion thanks, Katey. It's good of you to take time away from your book - this is one bad month to have something published online. :)
Two thumbs, up!
Thanks, Jodi.
People really don't use the word "skittered" enough.
I agree. ;)
I just 'skittered' across the 20,000 word mark myself, although not quite as eloquently as you. Now I can go read a golfing story.
Whoot on 20K! Off to read "The Flat-packed Golfer"...
Okay - just read it. Fun site by the way. Love the voice, delivery--perfect timing with that last line...
Good one Cate! Enjoyable story, after I conquered the mouse-fooling page turning thingy. Cheers!
That story is a lot of fun! Not at all what I expected, either. :)
Congrats on the 20k!
I hate it when dragons immolate my shoelaces.
Snarf.
Jamie, we are doing so well. ;)
Thanks for reading Aaron, Ian & KC.
Carrie :)
Congrats! The Flat-Packed Golfer is a fabulous title. :)
And... I see you’re reading The Graveyard Book. I bought a copy on Monday and put it right to the top of my TBR pile. Can’t wait!
Thanks, Mary.
I don't think I need to say that The Graveyard Book is very, very good, though I just did. :)
What a way to pull the guys in...golf... my husband will "read all about it" - when it involves golf.
You have to have a plan. :)
Congrats! I'm following Nano like crazy and you're doing awesome. Great golfer story, too.
Cheers!
