2. Queens Libraries Stopped Buying New Books in December

In a cost-cutting measure, 62 branches of Queens libraries in New York City stopped adding new books in December 2010. According to The New York Daily News, Queens libraries annually purchase 8,500 new books.

This means Queens patrons do not have access to the latest titles or new copies of old favorites. With mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s  looming “Agency Gap Closing Programs” proposal, things look worse than ever for New York City library services.

Here’s more from the article: “Overall, city libraries are facing nearly $100 million in budget cuts, which they say would lead to an estimated 1,500 layoffs…Without restored funding, city libraries would be forced to shorten hours and close dozens of branches, library officials testified.” (via Ron Hogan)

3. Library Layoffs & Cuts Proposed in New York City

Earlier this month, mayor Michael R. Bloomberg‘s Office of Management and Budget released a “Agency Gap Closing Programs” (PDF link) proposal that would dramatically cut library services in New York City.

Librarian Rita Meade took a personal look at the cuts: “These cuts would result in reduced library hours, the reduction and/or elimination of programs & materials, and staff layoffs. (Based on this budget model, Brooklyn Public Library could potentially lay off 158 employees this summer, including yours truly. Zoinks.)”

If you want to help, Meade linked to three online petitions to fight for library support. Choose your library: Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Borough Public Library, or NYPL (Manhattan, Staten Island, Bronx). For readers outside of New York, you can join the American Library Association’s National Library Legistlative Day to lend your support. (Link via, photo via)
