1. Roots and Branches: YA Services Past, Present and Future – the 2011 YALSA Past Presidents’ Lecture

The first annual YALSA Past Presidents’ Lecture was scheduled for Saturday, January 8, at the 2011 Midwinter Meeting. Unfortunately, the speaker, Mary K. Chelton, was unable to attend the Meeting and could therefore not present her lecture. However, Chelton was able to record her speech and it is provided here in its entirety.

Mary K. Chelton Past Presidents’ Lecture – 2011

Topics covered by Chelton in the lecture include:

  • Service to immigrant teens.
  • The role of school and public libraries.
  • Intellectual freedom.
  • YA collections.
  • The importance of expanding research on adolescence and the value of that research to those serving teens in libraries.

You can also read the speech. (pdf download)

2. YALSA Coffee with the Candidates

On Sunday, January 9, YALSA hosted Coffee with the Candidates. This new approach to getting to know the candidates running for YALSA Board, in an informal setting, was an excellent way to learn about those on the 2011 YALSA slate.

This is how it worked. Candidates running for each position sat together at tables. In other words Board candidates Christian Zabriskie and Sandra Hughes-Hassell sat together, candidates for President Jack Martin and Mary Hastler sat together, Fiscal Officer candidates Penny Johnson and Jerene Battisti sat together, and candidates for Secretary Sarajo Wentling and Krista McKenzie sat together. Those attending the session sat at each table for 15 minute Q and A sessions. After a 15 minute period attendees moved to another table to sit with another set of candidates.

Questions ranged from “Why do you want to run for YALSA Board” to “How do you see your role on the YALSA Executive Committee having an impact on that Committee.” (A question asked of those running for Fiscal Officer and Secretary.). Sometimes the questions asked provided opportunities for those sitting at the table to discuss the world of teen services and the ways in which YALSA supports teen librarians.

Coffee with the Candidates marks the beginning of the ALA/YALSA election season. Over the next several months YALSA members will have more opportunities to learn about the association’s 2011 election slate. Stay tuned to the YALSA Blog for more election information.

Thanks to the 2011 YALSA Nominating Committee Chair, John Sexton, and his members for putting together the slate and organizing the Coffee.

5. YALSA Not So Silent Auction: Skype Author Visit Selene Castrovilla

Authors Daniel Ehrenhaft and Jacqueline Woodson, along with SLJ blogger Diane Chen, all say that Selene Castrovilla is an author to “watch out for.” You and your teens will have that opportunity to “watch out for” Selene at YALSA’s Not-So-Silent Auction on Friday night of Midwinter when her Skype visit will be auctioned.

For those of you who attended the YA Lit Symposium in Albuquerque this past November, you may have met Selene or received one of her rubber chicken keychains. Her young adult novels include Saved by the Music and The Girl Next Door, while she also has written several historical fiction titles focusing on the American Revolution. With a choice of YA titles or titles with a curricular theme, both public and school librarians may find they are competing on the bidding for Castrovilla’s Skype visit.

More information about Selene is available on her website.

Friday night, January 7, 2011 at the Midwinter meeting in San Diego, YALSA’s Not So Silent Auction is the place to be. Along with great gift baskets and other goodies, a variety of Skype visits will be up for bid.

David Patneaude has published ten books, his most recent being Epitaph Road, a post-apocalyptic thriller published this past March. David, who has been making “real” visits to schools for years, is donating a virtual school visit via Skype.  He’s willing to consider almost any topic or format for the visit, so it will be up to the winning bidder (and David) to work out the specifics of the event prior to the date it happens.  You’ll choose, but here are some possibilities:  discussion and/or questions and answers about a specific title, his writing process, his writing life, research, future projects, or a less focused dialogue covering a range of subjects.

Tennessee school and public librarians should take note.  David’s 2007 novel, A Piece of the Sky, is part of the 2010-2011 Tennessee Volunteer State Reading List.  What a wonderful experience for students to interact with the author of a featured book during the year.
