I am with her when it comes to writing first thing in the morning–the internal critic sleeps late. I also agree about outlining. I like riding the edge of a story, unsure where the ride is going to take me. An outline is like putting on a seat belt, and like a seat belt I’m sure an outline would increase the likelihood of a safe arrival, but not as thrilling a trip. (But perhaps this is a flawed metaphor–I definitely believe in seat belts when riding in a literal, nonfiction car).
