E. Lockhart is the author of nine–nine!–novels for young adults, a host of other books under the name Emily Jenkins, and short and collaborative projects. Her 2008 release–The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks–was given a National Book Award Finalist medal and a Printz Honor. She chaired the Young People’s Lit National Book Award judging committee last year, and has much better hair than she thinks she does. Her latest novel, We Were Liars, has been hanging out on or very near the NYT Bestseller list since its release this past May.
In our conversation, we covered the new experience of hitting “the list,” the fear of feeling feelings, what awards really mean, her experience writing and selling the screenplay adaptation of We Were Liars, and oh so much more. I’ve known Emily for about seven years now, and took great personal pleasure in this conversation. I think you’ll enjoy it, too.
