1. Book Review: The Book of Paul by Richard Long

Description from Amazon

"Never alive...and never dead."

In the rubble-strewn wasteland of Alphabet City, a squalid tenement conceals a treasure "beyond all imagining"--an immaculately preserved, fifth century codex. The sole repository of ancient Hermetic lore, it contains the authentic alchemical rituals for transforming thought into substance, transmuting matter at will...and attaining eternal life.

When a lusty, East Village tattoo artist has a torrid encounter with a battle-hardened loner, they are overwhelmed by the intensity of their feelings. Rose and Martin soon discover they are unwitting pawns on opposing sides of a battle that has shaped the course of human history. At the center of the conflict is Paul, the villainous overlord of an underground feudal society, who guards the book's occult secrets in preparation for the fulfillment of an apocalyptic prophecy.

The action is relentless as Martin and Rose fight to escape Paul's clutches and Martin's destiny as the chosen recipient of Paul's sinister legacy. Science and magic, mythology and technology converge in a monumental battle where the stakes couldn't be higher: control of the ultimate power in the universe--the Maelstrom.

The Book of Paul is the first of seven volumes in a sweeping mythological narrative tracing the mystical connections between Hermes Trismegistus in ancient Egypt, Sophia, the female counterpart of Christ, and the Celtic druids of Clan Kelly.

Review

Overall Feedback: As I was starting this one I noticed that Richard was making nuanced revelations about certain aspects of the characters. These would have stood out more had Richard not moved between characters so quickly. Now most of you reading this review would take those first two lines as criticism, but it is not. Richard narrative ability not only allows him to move deftly between characters but he is able to do so without distracting the reader. He does well to cause a reader to read this one with one eye. His ability to arouse a readers mind is second to none and I can not wait for the second enstallment.

Point of View: Shifting but all from the point of view of a narrator via "eyelid movies".

Voice: Richard has outstanding talent and his ability to cause you to stay up long after you have read a chapter to question your own dealings shows this. He hits right on many social and relegious goings along with getting the reader to question some so-called myths.

Character Development: You would think that characters in the amount that this book goves would cause a killer headache. Richard is able to not only keep them straight but allow the reader to connect with each on their terms.

Plot: Everything was once truth and everything eventually becomes myth.

Dialogue: Conversations between the characters is where the reader will become the most attached to each character. Richard has mastered this area of writing.

Pacing: I do have to admit that the first 30 - 40 pages where a labor to get through and I had to put the book away a few times. But alas I did not give up and I am thankful that I did not as I found the story after all.

Setting: Most things happen in forgotten sections of our cities and towns. I think that the setting Richard chose gives more credence to the plot and helps develop each character.

Continuity: Once you get into the movement between characters there is not any trouble here and Richard leaves the reader salivating for the next installment.
