1. School Visits & Skype Visits

Cindy Lord blogged about school visits this morning and showed some thank you letters she received and they’re so sweet! I’ve been a friend and follower of Cindy for years and always enjoy her posts, especially when she shares those student notes.

In my day job, I’m a school library assistant and am around K-8 students every day. Out of all the duties I do—check out, check in, re-shelve, process incoming orders, process discards, pull units for teachers, etc., it’s the booktalks that I present to groups almost daily and the individual help I offer to students choosing a book that’s the most rewarding part of my job. That interaction, whether it’s with 30 kids or 1, leaves me with a smile on face and in my heart. When I introduce a book or series, whether it’s Little House on the Prairie to a 3rd grader, or The Hunger Games to an 8th grader, I’m filled with satisfaction and pride.

Now, doing author visits and Skype visits as an author...well, it fills me with that same satisfaction and pride time ten! I recently presented to a class of 3rd graders and also to a group of high school students and had a blast! Talking to students about my books and offering writing advice to them is as rewarding as seeing my novel in Barnes and Noble. Years ago, I honestly thought I’d be a bit nervous doing author visits, but I’m not! (okay...maybe a teeny bit, right before things begin, but then I relax and enjoy it). I’ve done plenty of presentations on the craft of writing to authors, teachers, and librarians, and hope to continue to offer those as well. For 2012/2013, I’d love to schedule more school visits and Skype sessions!
