I'm a little behind on posting this landscape, painted for Abend Gallery's Landscape show last month.

The vast depth of space and the multitude of stars, worlds, and galaxies is nearly impossible for our minds to fathom, but it's an awakening experience to attempt. This video may help - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xiWJoILkpVc
This is another piece appearing in tonights opening of the "Edge of Reaism" at Abend Gallery in Denver, 6-9pm. I'll be there, so if you're in the area, come say hi!

“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”

These two illustrations were painted last year for Dungeons & Dragons' recently released "Curse of Strahd" Adventure.
In the first painting, vistani seer, Stanamir, conjures and vision in the flames of a campfire. I'm happy to say this painting has been accepted to Spectrum 23! It's also featured in an article on the D&D website.
In the second painting, a little creepier than my usual work, the witch, Morgantha, takes human form to sell her drug laced pies in a misty oppressed town.

In still more news, I had the honor of being a juror of acceptance for this year's
National Juried Exhibition with the
Oil Painters of America. I think it's going to be a great show and since my vote doesn't count towards my own entries I'm also happy to say Shadowy Deep has been accepted to the show as well.

In wonder and curiosity of the warmth and light. A contemplation of what our ancestors (and mermaids) would have thought of the sun.

A new painting to commemorate humanity's first detailed glimpse of Pluto and it's moon, Charon, made last year by the New Horizons spacecraft. It was an amazing accomplishment, and a momentous event to be alive for as the face of the dwarf planet became known to humans for the first time in history!

It takes light 4.6 hours to reach Pluto from Earth. To get a sense of just how far away that is, and how amazing it is that we got there, check out this great video by Wylie Overstreet and Alex Gorosh. At nearest approach, Pluto is about the same distance as Neptune.

For your viewing pleasure, I also managed to record and compile a time-lapse video of the painting process of this small study.
There is more good news about my painting, Reaching Europa. It has received a second 2nd Place Award! This time in the Infected by Art annual competition, also claiming Gold in the Oil/Acrylic/Watercolor category. See all of the great winning artworks here. |

I've also recently been notified that I have been accepted as a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America!
Here are a couple of paintings from earlier this year that I never got around to posting online. First, we have the moon in the Earth's gravitational embrace (still available at
Abend Gallery). Next, the second painting in the Bioluminescence
series. The third painting here is Reaching Europa, which I have
posted before, but I have just learned that it has received
2nd Place in the Oil Painters of America
Fall Online Showcase!

Reaching Europa, Oil, 18 x 24 inches |
A companion piece to my previous painting, Reaching Europa (bottom), the focus of this new painting is the spirit of discovery, depicting Saturn, the Cassini space probe, and an allegorical figure of scientific truths yet undiscovered.
"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known."
- Carl Sagan
In less than a week I'll be exhibiting at the incredible show of imaginative realism,
IlluXCon, in Allentown, PA (Oct 21-25)! This painting will be there and I would highly recommend checking it out along with all the other amazing work in the show.

This new study goes up on Every Day Original tomorrow morning at 10am EDT.
If you've ever gone camping in a secluded place and walked away from the safe and warm glow of the fire, you've probably experienced a flash of fear for what could be out in the darkness with you, unseen. It's a very common and natural emotion for us having evolved ever watchful of predators. Though this fear may still strike in the darkness of one's own home, thanks to electricity, we live mostly free from this psychological marauder. Before electricity, when the sun went down, candles and campfires would have been our only feeble weapons against these fears, leaving us nothing to do but wait through the long darkness until the sun rose again to save us for another day. So in addition to the harvest symbols of our agricultural ancestors, the autumnal equinox represents the the last waning light before the long and psychologically safe days turned into the long and fearful nights of winter. From this perspective, it's easy to see why the sun and it's light plays such a strong role in the myths of so many cultures.

Here is the larger, finished version of the study I posted not too long ago. It's one more piece for the "Introductions" show at Abend Gallery opening this Friday, July 10th.
The heliosphere is the region of space that surrounds our solar system, where the solar wind (plasma) from our sun radiates outward and the magnetic field of the sun dominates space. This area ends well beyond Pluto. There, it meets the interstellar medium and it's boundary protects our solar system from most of the galactic cosmic rays coming from interstellar space.

Detail |
Another piece for the "Introductions" show at Abend Gallery opening this Friday, July 10th. This piece is also inspired by the poetic fact that many of the atoms that make up our bodies and the world around us have not always existed. They were fused in the cores of old stars that have since exploded and enriched the the material that formed new stars and planets including Earth and everything on it. We are made of starstuff, as Carl Sagan so eloquently expressed in his Cosmos series and Neil deGrasse Tyson in this video.
A new full size version from an earlier study, this piece will be in a show at
Abend Gallery opening July 10th. The show, titled "Introductions" is a group exhibit of new featured artists at the gallery. I'll be in attendance at the opening in Denver on July 10th for real in-person introductions, so if you're in the area come say hi. Until then, stay tuned for more work to be included in the show.

Oil, 20 x 24 inches |
This new study for a larger piece that's currently on my easel goes up for sale on Everyday Original tomorrow morning at 10am EDT.
The heliosphere is the region of space that surrounds our solar system, where the solar wind (plasma) from our sun radiates outward and the magnetic field of the sun dominates space. This area ends well beyond Pluto, where it meets the interstellar medium and it's boundary protects our solar system from most of the galactic cosmic rays coming from outside of it. More about the heliosphere.

Somehow, I forgot to post this painting here when it was completed and when it was accepted to the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition for this year. The exhibition has just ended, but better late than never.
This painting is about our scientific aspirations to explore Jupiter's moon, Europa. As this video from NASA explains, Europa holds intriguing possibilities for finding life beyond Earth.
