Last year, I was involved in an anthology project that changed my life forever. My essay, "Creative Awakening," was published in Speaking Your Truth: Courageous Stories From Inspiring Women.

This motivational women’s anthology holds heartfelt stories told by courageous women. The topics include healing, love, family matters, faith, spirituality, self-discovery and creativity. Each story contains a message meant to empower and encourage other woman to reach out and speak their truths.

I am very pleased to announce the launch of Speaking Your Truth:Volume IIa powerful anthology of which I am an advocate for.

28. Meet Author Diana Dolan

Diana Dolan is one of my dearest friends and biggest inspirations. She is a member of the writing group I founded and is celebrating her very first publication this month! I am so honored to have her as a guest on my blog to share her story and journey into publication. Meet the lovely Diana...

"I am very excited to be published next month as part of the anthology Speaking Your Truth: Courageous Stories From Inspiring Women - Volume II. My story, "The Glazed Penguin" is about an actual call that I took one night as a 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatcher here in Colorado.

Here is a taste of what that experience was like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL0U9OtpEFQ

29. 3 Books, 3 Authors, 1 Weekend, oh my!

Last weekend I participated in my first multi-author book signings with friends Breezy Fair and Patricia Reid. We signed both Saturday and Sunday at two different locations.

The first signing was at a book shop and coffee bar called Read, Write & Brew in Golden, Colorado. RWB is nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by breathtaking views of the foothills. The book shop itself is bright, warm and inviting with ceiling to floor windows, big comfy couches, sitting chairs and a large variety of new and used books housed in traditional bookshelves. It feels like home!

At my signing station.

31. My Journey to Success

In honor of my recent book launch, my dear friend and talented web designer Lea Meyer wrote an article about my journey to success and how I came to be a published author. Here is a snippet of her account:

It has been remarkable to witness Melissa’s journey to success and I think that her story offers a wonderful example of how to turn a dream into a reality!

32. Today's the day! My Book Launch!

Yippee!!! I am SO excited!

Today is the official launch of my debut young adult novel, My Beginning! I have been dreaming of this day for a very long time!

My relationship with My Beginning is as unique as the book itself. The idea for the book came to me in a dream where I experienced an adventure through the eyes of 16 year old Ivory. She lived in a dangerous and toxic world where children were forbidden to venture outside.

The dream was so vivid and unusual that I knew upon awakening that it was something special. I grabbed the nearest piece of paper and jotted the entire dream down, then put the paper away in a drawer. It wasn’t until right after I had my second son, about a year later, that I realized - "I’ve got to write this book!"

It took me about 2 months to complete the book with a newborn in tow. I would write all of my ideas down on notes during the day, then string them together at night.

When the book was finished I cleaned it up a bit and shared it with friends at a writing workshop, then put it away and started a new project. I didn’t look at it for over a year until my current publisher, Lucky Press, requested it – which is an interesting story...

I had originally submitted a different book and my publisher asked if I had anything else. I was like, "Yes! Of course!" But... I haven’t looked at it for over a year and it’s sci-fi, which is a genre Lucky Press had never published.

I sent the manuscript anyway thinking there was no way that it would ever be considered, but my publisher immediately fell in love with My Be

35. Childhood Keepsakes

Some of my childhood mementos.

Do you have a favorite toy, game, book or keepsake that you've carried from childhood into adulthood? Is there anything in particular that you miss and wish you still had to this day?

My good friend Janice Phelps Williams and I got to talking about childhood keepsakes and decided to dedicate a blog post specifically to those things that meant the most to us as kids. We're going to compare keepsakes with joint posts, so be sure to stop by and see Janice's blog, Appalachian Morning.

Things I've Held Onto:

1. Lots of books! See my Childhood Bookshelf.

2. Artwork, t-shirts, jewelry, CD's random-randomness from my teen years - I kept every shred of everything from my teen years, (except diary entries).

3. Pink stuffed bunny w/ sweater - A gift from my dad that I still cherish. He had it shipped to me the Easter my parents were separated when I was about 3 yrs old. It meant the world to me, and still does.

4. Collection of frogs - When I was a teen, I had an obsession with frogs. I collected all kinds of frog paraphernalia - stuffed animals, glass & clay figurines, random froggy knick knacks galore! For some reason, I felt they were special enough to tote around. Maybe my boys will like them someday. :)

5. Family gifts - I always kept gifts from my grandmothers, parents, brother and special friends. I still have a lot of these items - greeting cards, small tokens of affection, handmade or personalized gifts. Even as a child I recognized how important they were and cherished them very much.

6. Jewelry from Grandma - I have a collection of jewelry that my grandmother gave to me as a special "secret" gift. She pulled me aside during one of our family visits and let me rifle through all of her jewelry. I got to pick out whatever I want

38. Flip Words = Create Names

Have you ever pronounced your name backwards? When I was a teenager my friends and I would get a laugh out of seeing what our names sounded like reversed. Some of them were quite funny: Kendrick is Kcirdnek, sounds like Curd-neck, (still gives me a chuckle). My name is Assilem, sounds like Asylum. And of course there are those that are not affected like Hannah and Bob.

I started to wonder if this strange practice could be of use, other than for a good laugh, and began flipping every word I could think of. Most words sounded like gibberish, but there were actually quite a few that had a unique quality to them.

Eureka! So why not flip random words to create unusual character names?

Here are some examples:

Carrot: Torrac
Pillow: Wollip
Camera: Aremac
Closet: Tesolc
Table: Elbat
Lemon: Nomel
Soda: Ados

I've found the simplest words work best - longer ones are harder to pronounce. You may have to tweak and twist them a little. Of course, not all words work for this. You've got to do some exploring - but that's the fun part. ;)

39. Laughter is the Best Medicine!

Today is the Laughter is the Best Medicine Blogfest hosted by Lydia Kang at The Word is My Oyster, and Leigh T. Moore at That's Write. Participants post their favorite joke on writing, or any other topic, for one day only - today! The object is to spread cheer and laughter throughout the blogosphere. Here's my joke... Hope you enjoy it! :)

A panda bear walks into a bar and orders a sandwich. The bartender makes the sandwich and gives it to the bear. The bear eats the sandwich, pulls out a gun, shoots the man standing next to him, and walks out. Another man who watched the whole thing happen asks the bartender “What was that?” The bartender reaches under the bar, pulls out a dictionary and tells him to look it up. The man looks and finds this: Panda bear: Large black and white bear from Northern China. Eats shoots and leaves.

Hee, hee. :) What do you think? Have you heard this joke before?

The following review was posted today at Goodreads by Janice Phelps Williams:

"My introduction to Melissa Kline was through email and her query was perfectly written and clearly explained the premise of her young adult novel. Though I am not personally drawn to dystopian-type stories or movies, there was something about Melissa as an author and the main character, Ivory, as a 16-year-old girl living in an "institution" that drew me in..."

44.  My A to Z Short Story

I did it! I created a story with my A to Z challenge words and sentences! Here is the entire story from A to Z...

The anfractuous wind storm spun her auburn tendrils into a frenzy. She cradled the baetyl in her hand noticing its botryoidal shape. The night was unnaturally conticent as she wandered along a familiar cordate path. She'd managed to divagate into a shadow of trees, her focus upon the full moon and its dirigent light. The epipolism of pure moonlight reminded her of an epos written by her forbidden lover.
