10. SharePoint No Longer For Fun!

Recently while partaking in my daily lunchtime – catch up on the world in regards to business and technology – I’ve noticed a technology trend – the past few months – which has been on-going in regards to one of my favorite technologies – SharePoint. Flash back a few years and the grand gurus of SharePoint (you know whom you are!) – use to write technology articles and give great hints and words of wisdom – with great enthusiasm, gusto and care. Flash to today and what I mainly see in my web travels written by these mighty SharePoint gurus are paid endorsements for products by those whom for many years – I relied on for great SharePoint technology resources. While I understand that these individuals worked hard to promote their name, thoughts and even their own products they developed – it’s a growing trend not only in the SharePoint community – but in many other technology communities as well – where the notion of being a sell-out in regards to what one previously showed a passion and great care for – has been diminished for that of a dollar.

Therefore, grand gurus of SharePoint – please once again write your knowledge from your heart and share with those of us eager in the community to learn and follow your ways.

Appreciate any comments and thoughts on this – as well as any SharePoint links of those grand gurus whom still do indeed post many helpful written words of knowledge that are not endorsed for pure profit 

11. How Do the SharePoint Gurus Have Balance?

Ever wonder how the gurus of SharePoint can have the time to go to conferences, write books, blog as well as run successful businesses/have awesome jobs and run a household and have a life?I wonder this, a fair amount as I read the writings of those prominent in the SharePoint community. I sometimes wonder if they have ghost writers – churning out the massive tech-ness from their brains.I say this because I don’t see how – a normal person can keep up with all the treasure troves of information in the SharePoint world as well as possibly have the time to be an author/business person/household figure as well as have a life.Any SharePoint gurus out their – I’d love to know your secrets – so feel free to contact me and we can talk :)[email protected]http://www.kmo.name/sharepoint/sp_guru_balance.pdf

12. Kevin O’Neill on Marcellus Shale Volume 1 - Who Knew?

Kevin O’Neill on Marcellus Shale Volume 1 - Who Knew?http://www.kmo.name/newsletters/Marcellus_Shale_volI.pdf

Growing up in upstate New York – the notion of drilling and mines seemed somewhat of an absurdity – as it was never mentioned. However, I do recall one day seeing an advertisement on T.V. that an oil company was looking for shale – so a few friends and I spent the whole afternoon carting shale stone in our wagons from a neighboring lot where a house was being built to our yard with thoughts of striking it rich. When at day’s end – we told our parents to call the company to pick up the shale so we could cash in – we were devastated to learn from our parents that the company was looking for a lot of shale – like hundreds of acres worth so they could sap the oil out of the deposits.

So many years later as I find myself in Canonsburg, PA nestled on a home high up on a hill with my family that underneath it not only is a mine that was last utilized in 1961 but also has underneath it the crown jewel of shale - the Marcellus Shale bed. When we purchased the land and started building the house in 2000, we had no idea the Marcellus Shale bed was under our house. We first became aware of this when in 2009 we got a letter from a medium size drilling company that our house was in an area of interest to them for possibly placing a well. Interesting we thought, so I attended the information meeting and learned a fair amount about the process. Seems from what was stated typically a home owner owns the mineral rights under their homes. Thus, if I was willing to sign an agreement to have a well drilled – only at that point would the title of the house be run to see if I indeed owned the mineral rights on the land. If I did – then bingo – I could be paid after of course a hole was drilled on my property and a pipeline was run. Thus, it was stated that if someone owned less then an acre they would not become a millionaire from the royalties received from their pipeline – however several times during the night – the company stated, if someone owned more then 5 acres of land – they would want to speak to them right away.

Now in 2011 – many companies have sprung-up to tap into this vast shale bed which in Washington County where I live was formed in the Permian period which was the final period of the Paleozoic Era roughly 290 million years ago and lasted until 248 million years ago. Companies are building their regional headquarters in impressive style right down the street, our neighborhood and town is now experiencing a boom from many moving into the area for jobs related to this vast shale bed. All along looking back now 11 years – Who Knew?

14. How Much Can We Process?

In today’s unforeseen -> track of social media landscape – mixed in with the everyday occurrence of life’s duties. How much can we process? -> and ultimately do? An average day for most includes -> getting up, getting ready for work, waking the kids up, letting the dog out, getting breakfast, making lunches and always in the center of it all ->checking and responding to e-mail and reading the newspaper. After all this – we commute to work while we listen to the radio or take public transportation where we read what suits our fancy – thus absorbing more information.
Once at work its e-mail madness, meetings, projects -> lunch – a look over our favorite social media sites – then more e-mail madness, meetings, projects -> then a thought of what the night holds. We commute back home -> process more information on the radio or reading or maybe checking e-mails that are work and home related from a mobile device. We then may run errands, pick up the kids from after school activities -> we get dinner ready -> talk about the day over dinner -> cleanup, help the kids with their homework -> get on-line and social media some more. We maybe do some freelance/consulting work. Then we may get involved with the vast amount of printed and T.V. news information that is insane that one can get wrapped into after processing all this information -> it’s maybe time to put the kids to bed then unwind by processing more information on-line by surfing the Internet for fun, reading for pleasure, watching T.V. or doing one’s hobby type items. Then it’s maybe let the dog out one more time before heading to bed – then the whole day of processing and configuring the true vast plethora of information begins again! So thus – how much can we process?

16. Such a reliance these days on others peoples information!

Such a reliance these days on others peoples information! We rely on others servers for where a taxi is for our mobile app – we rely on others for what we think will be a good restaurant to eat at. We have news pouring in from all facets of websites. The list goes on and on. Thus go back 10-15 years and think; are we now relying on others for too much information?

17. Has Technology Made our Life Easier?

Growing up in the 70’s I remember an almost carefree life without having to worry about my hard-drive crashing, computer viruses, my cell phone connection etc. This being said let’s fast-forward to today where for each family event we typically have three camera taking opportunities in our possession:
1) A standard 35mm file camera
2) A digital camera
3) A camcorder

Although its’ nice capturing memories on different mediums – it’s sometimes can be stressful trying to capture those moments via the different mediums. Additionally – once one has captured the memories – then its’ work in regards to the digital picture medium to download the pictures -> size them -> modify them as desired with a background or taking our digital camera noise -> then printing them.

Thus, growing up in the 70’s picture taking wasn’t an ordeal – one took their pictures via a single camera – took the film once full and got it developed then got the pictures back and placed them in a scrapbook or filed them away. Well, this brings forth the question: Has technology made our lives easier?

Vacations are suppose to be precious time away from the office – I’ve seen first hand individuals while on vacation spots phoning into the office to check messages, setting-up meetings for late afternoon after the family has been to the amusement park and is done for the day. I’ve seen individuals at museums to parks with mobile devices sending e-mails furiously (I assume back to the office) Again, Has technology made our lives easier?

Writing at one time involved only pen and pencil – you wrote an item down that was it. Now – one can write an item down in their mobile device then transfer it to a standard personal computer. Sometimes the transfer doesn’t go well and one has to make changes at either the input or output level. Then there is the issue of compatibility as sometimes the system which one has entered data into isn’t compatible with another system – which leads to a data entry project. Again, has technology made our lives easier?

Possibly technology has made our lives easier given these situations:

Paying Bills – this is where I have to state technology has done wonders here – with the advent of the Internet, an individual no longer has to worry about stacks of papers and writing checks with a central account – it can all be done electronically. The only risk’s for such convenience is electronic cybercrime, identity theft, transfer theft etc.

Restaurants are now able to centralize their operations and know several minutes after closing – what their financial status is for a given night, what needs to be replenished, what sold well and what didn’t sell well. Before the touch screen menu days – such information would take hours of paper work to be sifted through for the business operations questions.

Communications – in a bitter winter storm I used my cell phone and cancelled a class while on the road and was able to reschedule it to another day. 10 years ago such an event would not have been possible but in today’s technology infrastructure it is.

In closing – technology is good I believe. However, in many cases depending on the circumstance – one has to ask: Has technology made this easier?

18. Is it the end of the world?

19. What do these people do that live in these big homes and mansions?

Driving around the other night about 2 miles from my house – I drove by some huge million dollar homes – I often wonder to myself – who lives in these homes? What in the world do the people do for a living to afford such luxuries? Is it old money? Is it inherited money? I just always wonder and ponder who are these people and what do they do?

23. Writing In A Wireless World

I believe more people are writing today then every before - with text messaging and e-mail being shot off from handheld devices - words are traveling at light speeds - several billions times a day. However - ever think how much of the words being conveyed are truly in their proper form? Even though writing - is running rampant - how much of this writing has misspelled words, word choice errors or words not even found in the dictionary? Sure - using textspeak - makes typing faster - but what does it do to the traditional writing?

In an undergrad class in college I made the grand statement that sports are hyped so much by the government so that people have other items to think about and discuss besides the government.
I was met obviously by the game crowd in the back of the room with a round of boos - but some took my side and now when I look back - the statement has some truth - I believe.
