4. Little Life Moments

Recently, have given much thought to the things that inspire.  As always, I am intrigued by the fact that whenever I am stalled on an idea ( just because I'm enjoying it so much ),  that thousands of facts, situations, art, photos, interesting people etc. etc. come my way.

Some recent quotes I read that quite fascinated me were :  " I listen to everything to see what I can leave out " ___ Miles Davis.
" to tell everything is to be a bore " ___ Voltaire.

So just how do you paint and create without over stating what you are thinking of...By Cautious listening to the spirit within you.The one that guides you to seeing those very subjects that compel and inspire you to recreate them. To place them on a canvas thus giving them a more lasting memory of the moment.   Always being aware of the most important parts of the story, so as not to lose the scene by trying to fit the whole book/movie/landscape on the one piece of canvas. But to give a glimpse only of the bigger picture seems to draw more of the viewer in then telling the whole story.
I believe that art is but an invitation to know more of the story of the creator. Much Knowledge can  be acquired by just accepting the invitation...

7. Ports Of Call

Recently I finished a painting for my son. He is a songwriter/producer/engineer living in Nashville, TN.  He had asked several months ago if I might have something for his studio space. After looking through the artworks I have in stock I decided that creating one special for his space would be best. Over the years my son and I have had many conversations about our artistic journey's.  One being not so long ago about facing the storms head on.  How sometimes its a struggle to get to the other side. The storm can be representative of so many circumstances we face in life. I remember clearly the day he left to move to Nashville upon taking an internship at a recording studio there. His conversations in the weeks following, statements such as I am not entirely sure if this will be an easy thing to do, writing and composing music for the Christian music industry.  Everyone here are Christians, this is the bible belt, will I reach anyone with what I believe God has called me to do ?   Bring His message of hope, peace, love...the Gospel...Jesus.  The bible has showed us many, many, many times how the storms of life change people and with God they can be faced head on.  I especially love and lean on the scripture in Matthew 14:29..." Come "
were the words of Jesus as He was standing on the water in the middle of the lake surrounded by a storm...and Peter went !  Thats all we need to know, he stepped out of the boat believing and answering the call.
How many times in our lives have we seen the storm coming and wanted to go the other way ?  How much easier is the choice to make to not engage, but do you realize that by not stepping out of your boat you are choosing...thats right choosing to not see God at work and I will go even further by saying you are choosing to not be blessed. Certainly something to think about right ?   I finished and signed this painting the morning of the marathon bombings in Boston, Ma ( irony you are thinking right ) ?  I beg to differ !  The first news report I saw was a bystander telling of the courageous people that ran towards the smoke.  Those that ran into the storm to help those in need.  I know it gives us all a good feeling to know that there are many people out there that heed these kinds of calls.  My question then is how will you and I respond to the call, it could be something big, or small. Maybe it is to share the love of Christ to a neighbor, friend or family member. Something I know that would seem a lot less dangerous though many people don't.  My hope is by writing this and putting it out there that one just one will respond and light the way for someone else.  God's word never goes in vain...So jump out of the boat will
ya ?

12. Anatomy Of The Soul

All artwork by Denise T. Armstrong  copyright 2011
Yesterday my husband and I attended a church membership meeting or as they called it ' class '.   Something that most churches require when you are considering joining.  In our case the decision had been made already prior.  A part of the class was to familiarize you with the church doctrine.  Being an evangelical church the importance of believing and having made an adult decision to receive Christ into your heart, ask forgiveness for the sin in your life,  and accept God's gift of salvation. The pastor leading the class prayed for those and with those that maybe had never done this or were uncertain of what they believed. Following this he then proceeded to explain the importance of baptism, and how the decision to be baptized is a public demonstration of your faith.  There is more to this but I am giving you the shortened version so that I can set the stage for what came later.  My husband and I have been believers since 1979, and were baptized later.  We were vey comfortable and understood all that was being taught here, in fact I was not quite sure why we needed to sit through the class.  But my presence there was not about my soul but another's.  I came to realize this much later as we headed home.  Next to me sat a very young couple I would say maybe early 20's or so.  Throughout the first half of class not much was really said to one another or between us.  Other than they moved here in August from Nebraska.  They looked like a couple but after observing them I noticed that there were no wedding rings.  They looked so much alike that for a brief moment I thought they might be brother and sister.  We took a break halfway through and they stayed at the table along with myself, I asked her what brought them here and she replied I came to connect with my biological father.  Before I could ask she then announced " it went badly ".  She had such a sense of overwhelming sadness and grief that I almost felt like crying for her.  She became quiet once more and the class restarted.  I could not help but think about them the rest of the time there. At one point I had noticed that she was copying my notes and we laughed she and I  like our souls connected for a moment in time.
We were nearing the end and the pastor asked if anyone would like to pray with him, those that have never received Christ into their hearts please follow after his words.  I had such an enormous pulling on my heart and soul to pray for this young couple, I know that God was working on my soul as well.  Afterwards the pastor announced that anyone who prayed and made the decision would be able to be baptized right after the class dismissed and that they were prepared with shorts, shirts, hair dryers etc. etc.. For some reason we all just seem to t

14. In The Zone

' Rising Fog in Woodforest '...by Denise Armstrong... July 25, 2011...30"x40"  Acrylic
                                                                     all rights reserved

Recently I had a conversation with my son,  about the ups and downs of the creative process. The key component to our talk was God's part in our creativity and when you are in the middle of a project how to stay at it.  I mentioned to him how it seems as if everytime I am in the studio working, the phone or doorbell rings, or its time to make dinner or there is a load of clothes to iron or wash, or the dogs need to be walked, or groceries to be purchased, or bills to be paid etc. etc.. Some of these to do's are not that important but certainly are all on my list of responsibilities.  My son being a professional songwriter and producer said you have to create that place where you go to, to stay and finish what you began. Where you meet with God and co-create. I knew right away of what he was talking about because I have often in the past referred to this place myself. This is a being in the zone type of place. A sweet spot where creative thoughts mesh and mold with your paintbrush, or clay, or pen and paper, or camera, your voice, a guitar or piano. Whatever that tool is that God has blessed you with.  The application method matters not because in that space and time God takes over, a place that you would like more than anything  to stay in until you have accomplished the task. This is the truest form of worship that I know of. It is the zone !  This is the place that I love to be, to go there in my mind, heart and soul is to pray and be at one with God, where He then will breathe out of you into the work.
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you___James 4:8
The creative mind doesn't necessarily know how to orchestrate through the coming together of everyday living with their creative realm. That's the problem ! But...for a believer all things come together for the good, as said in Romans 8:28. Though you don't like the interruptions sometimes they are necessary aggrevations. Without the daily routine your life would be a mess, yes even chaotic !  I firmly believe by not being able to stay in that spot of creativeness coinciding with God all the time makes me desire to be there even more. Because you see this is the only one space where the grass IS truly greener on the other side.  It is the place that I find myself referring to as home.  There is this feeling like I belong there and it has a familiarity like no other place I have been before.  It is a little piece of Heaven here on earth.  It even carries that feeling of ' Deja vu ' when thinking and reflecting on it. A place that God has carved out just for me.  I hope that if you are a creative soul that you will consider prayerfully finding your niche with God,  because He has blessings stored up for you when you meet Him there. I had to write about this topic because I know there are so many of you that know of this but maybe never could put it into wor

16. NobodyVille

Seems strange to be someplace where you know absolutely no one and no one knows you.  Recently the company my husband is employed by relocated us.  Across the country !  We really had a peace about it, the timing for us was good. Our now adult children agreed that it would be good for us.  The move hasn't been too hard thus far, we are temporarily living in a corporate housing apartment. It is small easy to care for and conveniently located.  We are waiting on making the final move the end of April into a home that we are having built. Through this adjusting process we have been trying to keep somewhat of what would have been our normal schedule of day to day events.  We have tried two different churches though still not feeling called to either one. The hard part is that when you have been in one place for almost 30 yrs. you are well adjusted, comfortable, and know people.  You can ask someone, ' What do you think of this Doctor, or this store for shopping ?  Pretty much you will trust them because of the history of the friendship or knowledge of your surroundings.  It has been very strange to be in Nobodyland !!  New surroundings, new people, new map of the area all of which we have to make ourselves acquainted with.
Sometimes I think about it and I ask why did we choose this ?  Other times I realize that it had already been chosen for us.  God knows what He is doing,  we bring something to the community like everyone else.  He wanted us to take it here now.  We are always on this road of discovery when it comes to God's will for our lives.  The answers lie in His hands, walking by faith is all he asks of us.  We know that Jesus walked through His life the same way.  The example He gives us of traveling from place to place without knowing anyone nor having any way of filling the day to day needs, shows us that it can be done. That God is in control and will not abandon you, even when you seem a little lost about how to venture out and become acquainted with your surroundings. Some people really struggle with this I do understand their reasons why they would not choose this for themselves.  I wouldn't consider myself an outgoing person, but I can clearly see that God has given me an enthusiasm to meet people and adjust. A motivation if you will.  You see I know that I am not here for me... that he has a story that He wants to tell through my life and my husband's.  The work of my hands that he has given, has a purpose. What I love most is that art is a universal language and now we are located in an International city.  Yes it is a Southwestern city, but it is also recognized for all its international corporate headquarters. Which of course bring in a lot of foreigners.  I think about how they have all relocated here as well, most from a lot further away than myself.  So how can I say that I live in this vacant land full of unknowns, when there are so many others just like me.  Yes, God has a plan, maybe it is to use my art, or maybe just to use my life in general.  This I know I am not dislocated just relocated.  Though I walk into church and know no one, or go to the grocery store and know no one this I do know... God knows me.  I am never alone. &

17. Landmarks & Signposts

I talk with my hands alot so I am told, but then I am an artist expressive and always setting the scene right ?  Another little quirk I am known for is my use of landmarks and visual signs for giving one directions.  Whether it be to my home/studio ( look for a white flower box on the porch filled with pink geraniums ) Or when looking for the street to turn left on you will pass a firehall first then make your turn ).  I just think it common for someone who is kinetic like me to use this kind of language when describing  or mapping out a place for someone else.  Because this is what I am seeing I naturally feel that it makes it easier for others as well.  Truth is it really is easier to navigate when you have landmarks.  The right landmarks help you make the right turns, on that same thought as we are journeying through our lives there are landmarks and signposts that we make choices at.  Some key moments we will pause to turn one way or another,  sometimes the right way and sometimes wrong.  The good news is that we have a great God who loves us and gives us landmarks to help us navigate through our lives so that we don't get lost.  By the way God allows U-Turns !  Some of the signposts He shows us are the ability to choose generosity over selfishness, honesty over lying, the choice to be thankful and obedient to Him.  Sometimes we still get lost so God intervened our journey and came as Jesus to show us the way He walked ahead of us to clear up any confusion about our destination. He gives us His Holy Spirit kind of a spiritual GPS to help us navigate and not be alone. This what you should do if you are lost...listen to His spirit, listen to His people, read His word. Put your trust in Jesus and when you are lost the right direction is always towards Him.  Th

21. The Need To Be Needed

In the world of relationships, whether it be
between friends and family, husband and wife, dating couples, or even just acquaintances to name a few, there are many dynamics. Recently in a couple of conversations with two entirely different people I heard the remark that they had a needy friend. I thought to myself exactly what defines the word needy ? What the dictionary defines is Needy: someone who lacks the the necessities of life; or someone who is poor. Often times I believe that because a person needs a friend doesn't mean that he or she needs what you have literally as in things. In most cases they virtually need your spirit
of friendship, because they genuinely like you or love you, and enjoy being with you. Its truly an honor to actually be needed most of the time, we carry a desire from birth to want to be needed in these ways. God has instilled it in us to need one another. So that first will will desire to know Him as He created us first to be His friend... Yes thats right HIS FRIEND...He calls me FRIEND...

22. Little Boy Lost

As my husband and I were preparing to eat dinner this evening we spotted a small child behind our home. He was at the very back of our property, and very close to a somewhat remote area where there are woods and a large pond. I immediately stopped what I was doing and ran out to the backyard to investigate. I'm not really sure what prompted me to do this other than the Holy Spirit, you see I am always seeing children and their parents walking on this trail near our yard. This child though caught my attention as I sensed a problem. As I approached him I looked to see if there were any other people or even children with him, and there were none, not even someone calling for him. It was then that my heart began to race as this child had Down Syndrome and clearly didn't know where he was. I asked what his name was and he happily said 'me' while he patted his chest. I then asked him very calmly if he would like to go for a walk to find his mommy, he smiled a big smile a shook his head yes. Then he reached for my hand. This lost little boy was not scared nor sad about his circumstances, possibly because he didn't know or understand the danger he might have been in. Looking upon his little face with all that innocent joy just brought tears to my eyes which I carefully did not let him see. We proceded out to the street and up the road about a block when I heard boys calling the name ' Emmitt'. I asked if he belonged to them and they said no but that people in a yard down from them were frantically looking for him. So I continued to walk in the direction they pointed me towards, when I spotted a man racing towards us I realized this was his daddy. Emmitt jumped up into his arms and it was then that he got a little teary eyed, as if he finally recognized what just happened. Thankful for a happy ending I went home. The experience of that evening played out in my mind and I came to think of how that small lost child resembles some of us. Lost in this life without even knowing it, happy and carefree heading for the unknown.

Then our father in Heaven draws us to Him, and when we recognize Him we are ecstatic to see Him and realize our need for Him in our lives. The need for His guidance, protection and all that He provides for us comes rushing to us. But ... most importantly we recognize our need for His saving grace, the one that forgives us of all our sin, and provides a home in heaven one day.
Can you imagine the joy that young boys father felt at having him safely returned ? I in my mind can picture God's joy as we return to Him. To only be able to see how easy it really is to recognize our need for God, and to fully understand that we are lost and need to be saved in order to live fully in the here and now. Jesus says in Matthew 10:10 ' The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.'

After having prepared many bible studies over the years for women's ministry and young adults, I have come to see some topics that are of grave importance. This particular topic of having been lost and now am found is still at the top of my list.

23. Leave Your Mind Behind

Reading 1 Thessalonians 1 : 9 & 10 recently and found myself questioning why do people work hard at avoiding that U Turn in their lives. You know the one that turns you away from things and situations, such as: wrong moral behavior, making
bad choices , idolizing other people, coveting stuff, wanting too many material things, money, houses, cars etc. etc.. I know I know, not this topic again... But why was the the question raised in my mind ? Well maybe because people think about it too much. (trying to go too deep ) or too little, (just callously overlooking) the whole idea of God that is . you see you can let your mind get in the way. Matt. 18:3 & 4 Jesus said " I tell you the truth, unless you become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Key thoughts here are as a child you are immature and innocent of the heart, soul, and mind ! I think that when I read that there are well over 300 references to the return of Christ in the 216 chapters of the New Testament (commentary by Charles Swindoll, President of Dallas Theological Seminary )
It brought to my mind He IS returning ! I have for a long time known this through Christ's Saving grace on my life and my faith in Him, and reading and studing The Holy Bible, but have you really really given this thought. He is returning ! Maybe not in my lifetime here on earth, but...one day. And... how would you react if when he comes you will I repeat that You will be face to face with him. Now my question is where will you be ? Will you have to U Turn from where you are or what you are doing ? Or... will you already be focused on the Heavens awaiting His arrival ? This scripture tells us of the Thessolonians who turned away from idols ie. things of this world and turned towards God, embraced Him and served Him all the rest of the days of their lives while they awaited His return. They were focused on Heaven while they lived out their faith through their lives daily.
Making the U Turn is a life changing experience and once ( YOU TURNED ) the journey towards Heaven will be shined upon by the light of God's face.. and what better way to meet Him when He returns: 1 Thess. 1:19.

If art is the manifestation of the creators thoughts and beliefs, should we not consider what we are bringing to the world via our works. When I meditate on this too long and not on The Masters plan, i find chaos, disorientation and illusiveness. Seeing The Word before me though brings me concrete understanding with a peacefulness to every thought. I am not surprised at this. God has a plan. He has always had a plan. Jeremiah
29:11 For I know the plans I have for you... I have read this passage many times over the years, and I can not tell you how often He has confirmed this for me. There is a great peace in knowing this. This also brings joy to me, for understanding His plans leaves no room for doubt, and when you are not doubting your mind is in a state of recieving that which He moves your hand to create. I know this is a mouthful but trust me, wrap your heart around it all of my artistic friends. You Will Not Be Disappointed !

25. Life Escapes Us...

For those of you whom are ever increasingly trying to escape the daily hum drums of life, think about this; some of us are actually living this out in reverse. Thats right, ' life is escaping us ' instead.  Just when you thought that you had things: events, special occasions, holidays all so perfectly planned ( in your mind ) they arrive with no time left to create that special moment.  Time seems to have a mind all its own,  sometimes we find humor in the way it catches up to us, but mostly we are disappointed that there has not been enough of it... time that is.  In our hurry to live out all those dreams and fantasies time seems to go right by us, and its not even patient enough to be courteous.  As I watched my children grow up into young adults I came to realize that I could not hold onto the precious moments spent with them.  Instead the moments turned into memories that later will become just old treasure stored in a cedar chest in someone's attic.  But... its those moments that we need to care for, those tiny short seconds of time that could change a life. That in short could easily turn the tables of history, forever.   The things we say and do for others that may only take a minute, could very well make all the difference in the world to the one on the receiving end of the moment you gave them.  I'll try to always remember to say I Love You to those that I have been blessed to know and love in this life.  After all it only takes half a second to say it !  So let us use our moments wisely.
