51. Barcelona Metropolitan October issue

Illustration for the October issue of the Barcelona Metropolitan. I drew the cover and a spread inside illustrating an article on the decrepit state of Las Ramblas, one of the most famous streets in Barcelona's city center.

It was a fun drawing to do. I went down and stalked the ramblas late at night taking notes, and then came back to my studio and sketched up ideas. drawing prostitutes and perverts is not something I do all the time, so it was a little outside my comfort zone, but i had goodtimes with the challenge. man o man.

I struggled a bit with the final colouring. I couldn't quite choose. you can see the other colour fiddlesticks in my flickr. somehow it turned out such a similar colour to the last cover illo i did for them, hmmm weird.

in the end this drawing broke my computer, and i had to go into the metropolitan offices to draw, but it was fun hanging out there, so it turned out excellent.

I'm pretty pleased with the final result, and some people left some nice comments on the barcelona metropolitans facebook page, so yay me!

52. Megans Wedding October 2009

Megans Wedding October 2009, originally uploaded by KatsAsleep.

So i have been in South Africa for the past month for my sister's wedding.
it was lovely to be home, Johannesburg was turing purple as all the jacarandas bloomed, the birds were out in fullforce for spring, and there were plenty of afternoon thundershowers.

My sisters and I helped my mom and aunt prepare for the wedding, we threw Meg an awesome hen party in the garden, which i sewed about a thousand scraps of cloth into bunting, which we strung up in the garden. we had sparklers and pimms with cucumber. the evening turned raucous as we ventured out into the night on our own private party bus with full on lazer beams.

the wedding itself was a fantastic vintage affair, all the ladies wearing hats and fascinators. it rained but rain is good luck at a wedding in africa, so it didnt dampen spirits and festivities continued long into the night.

i caught the bouquet, possibly to my boyfriends dismay, tee hee.

54. what i wore today

what i wore today, originally uploaded by KatsAsleep.

There is a wonderful group on flickr, which i joined today. Started by the illustrator Gemma Correl, whose little creatures i love! http://www.gemmacorrell.com/

anyway its called "what I wore today" but as she says some people prefer to draw pictures of themselves instead of photographing themselves. myself included...

this is my contribution. My favorite outfit of the moment, i like to call it my zebra zoot suit, even though it's not very zoot :)

go have a look at the rest of the clothing doodles and sketches here:

59. The Blue Fairy

The Blue Fairy, originally uploaded by KatsAsleep.

Personal Project for my portfolio. I have been illustrating characters and scenes from fairy tales... the blue fairy was always one of my favorites, although I really dislike the story of pinocchio, i'm not sure why, I think I found the idea of a wooden toy coming to life particularly creepy. But the fairy managed to take my breath away, I think it might be because she was blue :)

What are your favorite fairy tales, and characters?

So I spent some time this weekend drawing this, a personal project for me inspired really by a collection of vintage spectacles, some of them are being worn by the girls in the illustration. I enjoy drawing girls, maybe because I am a girl? anyway they are quite cute. You can download a wallpaper version of all of them here:

One of my illustrations has been featured in Carpaccio Magazine

.
I think they found me on my Flickr, and I think they are always on the lookout for new artists, in their own words, "Carpaccio Magazine is a monthly online publication and a quarterly print publication created to promote the work of 'uncooked' artists: emerging but very tasty artists."

This is Maxlet Octavius, part of a personal book project I illustrated for my friends. You can see the full story, here:

62. lightning-bird

lightning-bird, originally uploaded by KatsAsleep.

I drew this for MissYucki, inspired by tales of the lightning bird, via wikipedia'The Impundulu is a mythological creature in the folklore of the tribes of the Southern Africa including the Pondo, the Zulu and the Xhosa. The impundulu, which translates as "lightning bird" takes the form of a black and white bird, the size of a human which is said to summon thunder and lightning with its wings and talons.' [Wikipedia]

The lightning bird is known to have super special powers, and for being generally creepy all round. Among certain African tribes the Hammerkop is believed to be the lightning bird. The creature only manifests itself as a bird to women and, 'In one instance a village girl described a black bird that ran up her hoe and left claw marks on her body before it flew back to the clouds.'[Wikipedia]

Both the bird and it's eggs can be found where lightning strikes, and parts are often used in traditional medicine, sometimes to catch thieves. Apparently the lightning bird also enjoys a good blood fest, and can be found sucking on human blood, most notably enemies of the witchdoctor. Yum yum! Of course it is also known to seduce naughty girls :) MissYucki read that "In 2005, a South African man was convicted of culpable homicide after killing a two year old child he believed to be an impundulu." 65. Rea Vaya

Rea Vaya, originally uploaded by KatsAsleep.

A while back, I was commissioned to illustrate a comic to help illustrate the new Bus Rapid Transit System being installed in Johannesburg South Africa. The BRT is called Rea Vaya, and based on a system installed in South America. The buses have their own special lane which other traffic cannot use, so become more like a metro system.

I'm interested to see if the project will be successful or not. Johannesburg has been in desperate need of some form of public transport that is reliable and safe, so I'm crossing fingers that this will work, especially in light of the 2010 Soccer World Cup that is looming next year.

Rea Vaya has received good and bad press, residents complain that the roadworks are intruding on their lives, making their commutes longer, and their neighborhoods more dangerous, as traffic is rerouted through suburban areas. The project has also been hampered by Taxi strikes, and is quite controversial in that it hopes to include the taxi drivers into the project, providing jobs, and hopefully minimizing the Taxi problems that Johannesburg has been plagued with.

The cartoon was fun to draw, and was a first for me in terms of it being a mini comic strip. It was also an interesting experiment in that I had to carefully merge my illustration style with the brief - which was more along the lines of a stereotypical educational poster. I hope that I made it a little more interesting through the use of pattern and line work - but i have yet to hear if the cartoon will actually be used although it seems to have been approved.

The whole project is hugely political, and every channel needs to be appeased, so here's hoping that my illustration will grace the bus map flyers! :)

you can find out more about the project here:

69. A few illustrations

I have been working for the Barcelona Metropolitan, as you may have guessed, and it's provided me with some cool illustration opportunities... here are the latest

Spanish Hand Gestures

This was a spot for a column on Spanish Hand Gestures, there are all sorts. From the Bull horns, which means something pretty different here - Your wife/girlfriend is cheating on you, hahah i wonder if all kids using it at rock concerts realise :), to a close fingered gesture which is supposed to indicate that a place/bar is full. i'm going to stay on the lookout for these.

I also drew a sketch of Barcelona, with all the major sights, from Botero's fat cat in Raval to Sagrada Familias Sand drip castle towers.... It has been used as the main banner on the Barcelona - Metros website. yay! the website is all new and spiffy too, so go have a look :)

70. Pearspotted Owlet

Pearspotted Owlet, originally uploaded by KatsAsleep.

The Pearl-spotted Owlet (Glaucidium perlatum) is an owl which breeds in Africa south of the Sahara. Its super tiny, infact i have drawn it too big, it should be just bigger than your hand.

This species often hunts by day, and can be readily located by the small birds that mob it while it is perched in a tree. It hunts a variety of small prey. The call is a whistled tu-tu-tu-tu-tu-tu-tu.

The article had many interesting ways to make your home greener, from recycling your water , and making big ol' compost piles :)

And here's the "super surgeon" dashing through a wardrobe change, as he learns new things and takes on a different world after studying medicine (i believe)...It was so much fun to illustrate this. Yay. Milos told me that he would take me out to any restaurant in Barcelona, if I did truly get my illo on the cover. so hurrah, now i will do some research into the yummiest places to eat out, and we can go on a hot date! :) Any suggestions? pity I just started a diet, first one ever too, so i plan on sticking to it!
