She was born to be creative. The idea attracts here and her heartbeat quickens. Adrenalin building, building and then it erupts. With eyes lit with high-beam energy she captures the mental note of her brilliant proposal. For a few minutes her conviction concedes that she will commence as soon as time permits, the minute she can find the mental break to fashion her idea with finesse. She owned

I was minding my own business, drinking a fourth cup of coffee and reading Boing Boing, when I ran into this short post about Latawnya, the Naughty Horse, Learns to Say "No" to Drugs, a 1990 picture book. ("Published" by Vantage Press.) Click on over to the post: there's a wonderful image of one of the inside pages.
Read the Amazon reviews, I dare you!
You can see a scan of the entire book here.

Okay, I took the dare because last summer I saw some self-published items that make this look like Shakespeare. The reviews are great but what sent me reeling was the price: $138.01?!! Did Ms. Gibson (or someone in her stead)feel she needed to offset her costs by charging for the full print run?
"will leave you laughing, crying, and making scary noises."
Making some of my own over here.
This HAS TO BE a joke. Amazon helpfully lets us know that people who purchased this book (and right away I know who purchased it: NO ONE) also enjoy books about Dumpster diving, living in your car, and finding trash to make it attractive.
At least I deeply and truly hope it is a joke. At least it amply explains the Vantage-as-publisher thing.
Kelly,
That's just too funny. Thanks for giving me a good laugh!
I am pretty sure, David and TadMack, that the amazon page is totally a joke. The question is...is the book for real? In any case, it's one strange thing :)
The book's totally for real. I'm the guy who posted that on SomethingAwful forums, and the reviews are jokes but the whole thing actually exists. I have the ISBN written in the post that's linked to, you can look it up. It's...worrisome, to say the least, that the damned thing got published.
Oh, and the reason the price is so high on amazon was because the forum post caused everyone to go out and buy the cheap used copies (it's out of print so only used copies are left) leaving some entrepeneurial man to put up his copy at a ridiculous price.
fabulous!! Just fabulous! The complete text, the illustrations, "the scary noises," the reviews, the "This book is no longer available and we're not sure if it ever will be available again" notation!!
*sigh* happy, happy wednesday
Ben: Thank you so, so much for stopping by and clarifying. What a story! I really appreciate knowing the the truth, as sad as it is.
Colleen: It's no longer available? I'll have to go take a look...
I think the funniest part is "The author would like to thank God. 'Thank you, God'" on her little bio page.
Yeesh.
Thanks for the hearty morning laugh, Kelly.
