26. This week's round-up of middle grade fantasy and sci fi (2/24/2013)

Welcome to this week's (wet and cold) round-up of middle grade fantasy and science fiction book reviews, author interviews, and interesting (d.v.) miscellanea from around the blogs!

In case you wonder how I find the links, here's how.   I follow about 500 blogs on google reader (which doesn't mean I read them.  Just the post titles, mostly.  So it doesn't actually take too long).  On Sunday morning, I do a blog search on "middle grade fantasy."  I have been known to go through the books recently reviewed on Kirkus, so I can do some specific title searches, and I search for books I myself know about.  Occasionally people send me links.

Which leads gracefully to my next point--more people are welcome to send links directly! (charlotteslibrary at gmail dot com). This includes authors and publicists.  That being said, I do reserve the right to decline to link to posts I don't find valuable.  People are also welcome to leave links in the comments.

Onward.

Other Good Stuff

Shortlists!  The Andre Norton Award, the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, and the Diagram Prize (for quirkiest book title).  Here are this year's contestants for that one:

Goblinproofing One's Chicken Coop by Reginald Bakeley
God's Doodle: The Life and Times of the Penis by Tom Hickman
How Tea Cosies Changed the World by Loani Prior
How to Sharpen Pencils by David Rees
Lofts of North America: Pigeon Lofts by Jerry Gagne
Was Hitler Ill? by Hans-Joachim Neumann and Henrik Eberle

I think I like the peaceful simplicity of "How to Sharpen Pencils" the best.  What I'd really like, though, is a book on how to keep pencil erasers fresh, or at least, how to restore them to eraserability.

Children's Book Week (May 13-19, 2013) is on its way, and this year's bookmark is nicely mg sff!  Plus it has a hidden letters challenge.

A list of fantasy for music lovers, at alibrarymama

A giveaway of interest--The Blackhope Enigma and its sequel, The Crimson Shard, at There's a Book

A YA book that I am very intrigued by is Midwinterblood, by Marcus Sedgwick--not because it actually sounds like a perfect fit for me, but because it was partly inspired by Carl Larsson’s painting Midvinterblot:

I have a tremendous fondness for the paintings of Carl Larsson, which mostly aren't about midwinter sacrifices, and are instead mostly paintings of children and people making and doing ordinary things.   There is one picture of a girl that I find particularly haunting, so if anyone else feels like writing a fantasy inspired by one of his paintings, could you please write me Suzanne's story?

Other Good Stuff:

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of American ( SFWA) has a new interest group of writers who write mg and YA.  Here's the first of a series of posts from this group--a survey of the writers' editors and agents, asking them how they define MG and YA.

I made a resolution this year to read one fantasy book for grown-ups every week.  My list of possible choice has just expanded--here's the Locus 2012 recommended reading list.   The only one I've heard of is Boneland, by Alan Garner, which has been in the house for months and which my husband says is brilliant....

The Brown Bookshelf is once again celebrating Black History Month with 28 Days Later--every day a different author or illustrator is featured.  And today's entry has just added another book to my tbr list--The Summer Prince, by Alaya Dawn Johnson.

A post in which I look for feminism in middle grade sci fi/fantasy

Other Good Stuff:

Wondering if a mg sff might win the Newbery, I made a list of all the mg sff books that got stars (shamelessly plucking them from Elizabeth Bluemle's comprehensive list at Shelftalker)

My sister and I had fun making up our own tunes for Menolly's songs, but these guys almost certainly a. did a better job b. took it seriously (found at  Tales of the Marvellous, where you can read more about them).  I just want to add that the cover of Dragon Song used for the second cd is just about my favorite book cover illustration ever, and it works exquisitely as a cd cover!

Lolcats of the Middle Ages (found via Light Reading):

And finally, speaking of book covers, though not mg sff covers, here is a new book called Doomed:

Here is what I saw....

....a rather cute cyclopedian (cyclopsian? one-eyed?) animal (my son saw a really weird tube worm...)  It has taken me a lot of effort to see it as the hand it is supposed to be.

Other Good Stuff:

The False Prince, by Jennifer Nielsen, is being made into a movie.

The People (at least34, 435 of them) have petitioned the Obama administration to build a Death Star.  Here's the Official Response, from Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

"The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We're working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.

The Administration does not support blowing up planets.

Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?"

Thanks to the Fourth Annual Blog Comment Challenge I found myself visiting Sarah Albee's blog, where I found a lovely post on WW II carrier pigeons that includes this extraordinarily helpful piece of information.  Being unable to wrap anything neatly, I shudder to think how bad I would be at this (although I think I could cope with Item 8, which appears to be "open box").

32. This week's round-up of middle grade sci fi/fantasy from around the blogs (12/29/12)

The last round-up of 2012!  And the last before the Cybils are announced on Jan.1, and I can finally talk openly about which mg sff books are my favorites of the year!  Which leads me to a call for help--I stopped reading new mg sff books as of October (since I was busy as a first round panelist reading the 151 books nominated), so I'm wondering what I missed in November and December.  I've already put in a library request for Here Where the Sunbeams are Green--what else should I read from those two lost months?

And now, the round-up--please let me know if I missed your post!

33. This week's middle grade sci fi/fantasy roundup (12/23/12)

The fierce struggle that happens when eight computer users must share one computer is one reason why I didn't get this done yesterday....the other, more interesting, reason is that us MG sff Cybils panelists talked on online for several hours as we struggled to formulate our shortlist.   Only one book was agreed on yesterday...though several still have seats at the table, and many more were allowed to stay in the room, and given cookies.   Some even got cookies with sprinkles.

There not much from me in this week's round-up--I've been mostly re-reading for the Cybils some books I read over a year ago, so as to see if what I think about them is really what I think about them....which has been a treat, because I really do like rereading, and don't do enough of it!  But here's what other people posted about!  Do let me know if I missed your post!

Other Good Stuff:

I missed this list in November--School Library Journal's compilation of Middle Grade Fantasy you should have in your library.

(and I made my own little list of fantasy books to give a nine-year old boy)

Jenn Reese reminds us of middle grade books that have been honored by the Norton Award, and urges nominators to keep this age group in mind this year.

What's with all the dead parents in middle grade fantasy? at KimberlyLynKane

We went to see The Hobbit last night, and were pretty happy with it (though some of us, ie me, felt there was too much fighting, felt that Rivendell looks too much like a Thomas Kincade painting, and thought Galadriel's dress was silly).  But in any event, it would be very helpful to have studied this dwarf identification flowchart in advance, and perhaps even to have it printed out, with a little pen light on hand, to consult during the movie.  My younger son and I like Kili best (which makes me sad in advance about the ultimate ending....).

40. This week's round-up of middle grade sci fi/fantasy from around the blogs--"like Calvin and Hobbes, but with muffins"

"Like Calvin and Hobbes, but with muffins" is how my youngest described the graphic novel he's currently working on.  It tickled me very much; however, this week's round-up of the mg sff posts I found in my blog reading has nothing to do with muffins.  In any event, let me know if I missed your post!

41. This Sunday's round-up of middle grade fantasy and sci fi from around the blogs (9/30/12)

I'm on my way back from Kidlitcon today...with 26 middle grade fantasy and science books to read!   Later this week I'll do a recap post of the two publisher previews I went to on Friday, from whence about twenty of these books came (the others came from the ARC swap trolley on Saturday).  But in any event, Kidlitcon was as fun as ever, and every year there are more lovely people who I know who I'm so happy to see again, and every year I make new friends.  It is good.

So here's this week's roundup of what I found in my blog reading viz middle grade sci fi/fantasy.  Please let me know if I missed your post! (it somewhat more likely than usual that I did because of being at Kidlitcon)

First, an news item:  Nominations for the Cybils open tomorrow, Oct. 1.  At midnight, Pacific Time.  Go forth and nominate!

Second:  the reviews this week are slightly more diverse (ie they have characters who aren't white and they are written by authors of color) than usual.  This is entirely due to this blog event--A More Diverse Universe-- which I hope we see again! (It was a week long carnival gathering reviews of speculative fiction by authors of color, so there are lots of books for older readers too!)

The Reviews:

3 Below, by Patrick Carmen, at Good Books and Good Wine

Authors and Interviews

Shannon Messenger (Keeper of the Lost Cities) talks about books she loved as a kid at Project Mayhem

Other Good Stuff:

All Hallow's Read approaches.  Neil Gaiman explains it.

There's a fiftieth anniversary celebration of The Wolves of Whilloughby Chase, by Joan Aiken, coming up in NY toward the end of October.

And finally, haven't we all wished, at one time or another, that we had an inflatable unicorn horn to tie onto our cat?

Now we can live that dream.

If I want to make my 12 year old son shriek, all I have to do is say, in a cloyingly sweet voice, "rainbow unicorn kittens."  So when I saw this, I thought of him...(thanks to Tor).

42. This week's mg sff round-up (Sept. 23,2012)

Good morning.  Here's what I found this week, scouring the internet in search of middle grade sci fi/fantasy related posts--please let me know if I missed yours!

Next week's round-up might be delayed, as I will be on my way home from Kidlitcon in NY, and my plans for Sunday morning are more along the lines of "have brunch with sister" than "get mg sff round-up done."

Speaking of Kidlitcon, it is free, and it is a wonderful chance to meet other bloggers, and though on line registration has ended, on site registration at the New York Public Library is still possible (at least, there's nothing on the web page saying is isn't).

Nominations for the Cybils start Oct. 1.  Here are the mg sff panelists (which includes me).  Every year, there are more Young Adult books nominated (not that I'm competitive about pointless things or anything).   Every year, worthy MG books don't make it.  Although the nominating procedures have changed somewhat, giving publishers the opportunity to fill in gaps, nominations from the floor (ie, anyone reading this!) are the backbone of the Cybils (or something).  So please feel free to nominate!

Back to our main program.

And finally, a random tip:  If you buy expensive art wallpaper, don't wipe it with a wet sponge.  You will wipe off the expensive art part.

And finally, a lovely picture from the Etsy story of artist Elly MacKay, and boy was it hard to chose just one picture. I might very well ask for one of her pictures for my birthday...and maybe even try my own hand at doing something similar--if I do it with boys, it becomes Educational and process will matter more than (lack) of beautiful product. (Thanks to Chasing Ray for the introduction).

For more info, here's the Guardian article. [Which is correct--Grimm's Tales, as the Guardian has it, or Grimms' Tales, since there were two brothers????]

Not related to mg sff at all, but these reviews are Utterly Funny (thanks to This is Not the Six World Novel)

Of Bloggish interest:
The schedule for Kitlitcon 2012 is up! And it looks great. This is the most fun conference ever (if, of course, you are a children's book blogger. If you are a dairy farm, perhaps, not so much).

Sign ups are now ongoing for the A More Diverse Universe blog tour, which will happen Sept 23rd to Sept. 29th. "To participate, you need only read and review one book in the speculative fiction genre that was written by a person of color."

Book Blogger Appreciation Week is coming Sept. 10-14 (with no awards this year, which I think is for the best).

This week's round-up brought to you by the Poodle Moth, coming soon to a backyard near you:

46. This Sunday's round-up of middle grade fantasy and science fiction from around the blogs (8/26/2012)

Good morning, and welcome to another Sunday morning round-up of all the posts I found in my blog reading of interest to fans of middle grade sci fi and fantasy. Please let me know if I missed yours!

Just a reminder-- the deadline for applying for a slot as a Cybils panelist (August 31) fast approaches! Here's what Sheila Ruth, the sci fi/fantasy organizer has to say: "I'm especially in need of people who are passionate and knowledgeable about middle grade for the Middle Grade SFF panel. We always get many more applications for YA SFF than for MG SFF, and while many of the YA applicants say that they'll be happy with middle grade, and I appreciate that, I'd love to fill the middle grade panel with judges who love middle grade and put it as their first choice." But if you are daunted by the number of books that will be getting nominated in mg sff (probably around 150), maybe graphic novels, or book apps, or the non-fiction categories (all of which are in need of panelists) would be a good fit for you.

48. This Sunday's round-up of middle grade fantasy and science fiction from around the blogs (8/12/2012)

So just in case you are visiting one of these round-ups for the first time--a few years ago I was wishing that it was easier to find reviews of middle grade sci fi and fantasy books--there are lots of blogs where you can reliably find the YA side of things, but not so much for the younger books. So I started doing it myself.

I exercise some discretion in what I include--a post that's too short, or too purly promotional, probably won't make my personal cut. I'm happy to take links to posts at any time during the week (of posts from that week only, of course--not old reviews). My email is charlotteslibrary at gmail dot com. Thanks!

Other Good Stuff

K is for Kelpie, by Holly Black, at Scribble City Central

I can't help but feel a tad sorry for McKayla, but still I chuckled--here she is not being impressed with sci fi at Tor.

Monica at Educating Alice caught a Guardian article I'd missed--Jacqueline Wilson is writing a modern-day sequel to Five Children and It, called Four Children and It. Since it will obviously be impossible to preserve the flavour of the Edwardian original (it was published in 1902), I'm thinking I'll try to take it on its own merits as a contemporary fantasy...like I did for The Humming Room.

And finally--The Cybils are coming to life once more. Things aren't going to really get going till next month, but it's still exciting to see the 2012 logo!
For those of you who don't know what the Cybils are--these are awards are given each year by bloggers for the year's best children's and young adult titles in a variety of categories, including middle grade sci fi and fantasy! The shortlists generated each year, by the way, are an awesome resource.

All bloggers can put their name forward to be on one of the panels--and so I am mentioning this now because all of you whose posts show up here on a regular basis would make swell panelists in MG Sci Fi/Fantasy, and I'd urge you to start thinking about it. I've been a first round panelist several times, and loved it. Do feel free to email me if you have any questions about what it's like...
