How can I say this........the inspiration from working with such gifted teachers around the country.
This boy is working on a huge book project all inspired by people he will never know. His principal was hooked into the inspiration because of roots deep in Ohio where I've been lucky to work for more than twenty years with people like Mary Sheridan. Mary and I are headed into a new year with her brand new school, Sycamore Creek. The plan, which no doubt will change and evolve as we talk more, is to create maps from Ohio to Papahanaumokuakea. Kids in Ohio will connect with the middle of the Pacific just as this boy is tracing a path from his home in Wyoming to the distant Pacific in a Big Book called Snake to the Sea.
Somewhere hidden from view is a love of the work of Ohio artist, Aminah Robinson. Aminah has influenced many of us and I had the privilege of spending time with her a few times in her studio........gaining some wisdom and even a couple of paint brushes to use with kids. Thank you Aminah!
For many authors, the visit to a school is all about signing books.
For many authors, the visit to a school has more to do with getting kids to write about anything........
Okay. But I think it is critical in these days to encourage kids to think about their world and find a way to get involved. Kids love to feel the weight of the world while making it lighter.
I get to help them do just that.
Thank you to all the incredible teachers who have helped me help kids!
