1. Diet for Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. It develops when faulty immune signals trigger rapid growth of skin cells. This skin disorder is characterized by dry, scaly, red and swollen patches on the skin. Psoriasis is a chronic disease. It is incurable. However, with the right treatment, recurrent flare-ups could be kept under control. A well balanced detox diet might reduce also the disease. Although the psoriasis diet might not provide a permanent solution to the problem, it could lessen frequent psoriasis outbreaks. The diet of a psoriasis patient should comprise primarily of fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grain products, nuts and seeds. A high fiber diet helps to remove toxins from the gastrointestinal tract by easing bowel movement. A low fiber diet tends to worsen the skin disorder. Regular intake of psyllium husk might be beneficial for patients. Zinc is essential for the health of the immune system. People suffering from psoriasis tend to suffer from zinc deficiency. Diet of psoriasis patients should contain zinc rich foods such as whole grains, pumpkin seeds, shellfish, chicken, salmon, turkey, pork and beef. Dairy products contain moderate amounts of zinc. Sometimes zinc supplements are good for preventing zinc deficiency.

Omega-3 fats could improve the condition of the skin of psoriasis patients. They could reduce skin inflammation. Fish oil is the richest source of omega-3 fats. Vegetarians can obtain these essential fatty acids from flax seed oil, sesame and sunflower seeds and walnuts. Folic acid rich foods are present in this diet. Some psoriasis patients suffer from folic acid deficiency. To prevent deficiency of this essential B vitamin, psoriasis patients should consume plenty of leafy green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, and breads and breakfast cereals fortified with folic acid. Psoriasis patients should drink plenty of water and fluids. At least eight glasses of water should be consumed daily to reduce the skin disorder. Foods to avoid.
