Book Review – ME & HER: A Memoir of Madness
Please welcome Karen Tyrrell, Brisbane multi-genre writer, author of ME & HER: A Memoir of Madness. This is her brave account of how a primary school teacher reached breaking point, after parents at her school repeatedly harassed her. ME & HER reveals Karen’s gradual decline and disintegration, how her illness manifested and how she recovered. Karen shares her strategies to recovery and wellness in her gutsy memoir.
Book Review:
Karen Tyrrell has shown an amazing strength through sharing her story about “the elephant of mental illness in the room”. This book will break down barriers of understanding for those whose lives are affected by mental illness by either having the scary diagnosis or the friend or family member who has.
Karen’s story takes you back to the beginning when it all started to manifest. Her struggle to understand ‘Herself’ and deal with the issues presented to her. Mental illness is not something that affects one person and Karen has bravely included in her story how it has changed her relationships, her family and her work life.
Karen Tyrrell’s roller-coaster ride of hyper mania and the insanity of ‘Her’, followed by the climb back to ‘normality’ is a tale that must be read. The brutal honesty of Karen’s words are very touching, she has not sugar-coated anything. You can really feel the crazy rush of feelings she had to contend with in this realistic look into the confusing world of Me & Her making this a disturbingly addictive read.
What a raw and touching journey!

Wow! Well, when you put it like that Ang, how could I not want to pick up a copy? Well done on getting your book, and your message, out there Karen – an amazing journey in itself. Any literature that helps others in breaking down the barriers that result from mental illness is indeed words well spent. Cheers, Scott.

The book sounds amazing – as a parent about to enter the school world I would love to read this book to help me understand the potential lay of the land (though I hope your experience isn’t too common) and to be wary of gang like parent behaviour. Thanks for exposing your raw self and writing what sounds like a fantastic book.
Thanks Jodie,
for dropping by to to check out my REVIEW and support ME & HER.
Sadly Teacher harassment is MORE common than you think.
in many cases schools and education systems try to hush the whole thing.OR they fel powerless to ACT …

it has been quite a journey for us too watching Karen focus on her dreams, and build her writing career and the way she has promoted herself and her book has been very inspiring and on more than one occasion has made me dash off and do some of my own work. im looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of her and me…. and congrats Karen on a wonderful ride…
I think it is wonderful that people have the courage to speak up and tell their stories. Warts and all to help others to EMPOWER themself. That through Karen’s sharing her story of learning and acceptance. She can inspire others to to seek help to enjoy a healthy & loving life. Unfortunately, I experienced major depression many years ago by the words and actions of my children’s principal. I was harassed and told a was a problem, when I required support for my child. As it turned out it was the push I needed to find my way to LOVE ME…. Life is a journey. Thank you
Karen for sharing you.
I would love to win the book to understand this ladies experience and strength.
I share my journey since on face book page http://www.facebook.com/Findingurwings and I hope to write my story to help others too.

Sounds really inspiring Karen, I’m glad you have put it out there to help other’s understand the humility, pain and suffering you endured! I would like to read a copy so I too can be enlightened on a topic that for far too long has been swept under the carpet. You are one gusty lady and I wish you the warmest success with anything you do in life. To overcome this adversity is to conquer you’re inner fears and you have done that. Bravo! I can’t wait to read it and absorb the raw honesty and pathos you have filled the pages with! XXX
Thanks so much Vicki for sharing your support and encouragement for ME & HER.
I’d love to hear you feedback after you’ve read my memoir … thanks, Karen x
