A confused writer trying to get it right.
1. Freestyle Friday: Gregory Orr

This Friday, instead of sharing one of my poems, I thought I'd share a fave from a poet whose work inspires me: Gregory Orr. This particular poem is relevant to a novel I recently outlined. My dream is that one day, I'll get to quote Orr's poetry (particularly today's poem) in a book of my own.

When I start a new project, it helps to have a theme song (Tori Amos was the soundtrack for SUNSTRUCK) or a theme poem (Gregory Orr's "Tin Cup" was a muse for SUNSTRUCK).

This is...

Celestial Desolations
by Gregory Orr

Now God wants even
us mollusks
to frolic--
he's sent his bolt
to smash open
that shell that was
my soul's abode.
Now there's no
more hiding, now
the core
of me's exposed.

Blast and shatter;
glitter and gone...

And so the heart
must gather
all its atoms,
glue them
with dew.

And so the world
begins anew:
miracle of molecules
clinging,
the spider
in the dark night
reweaving
its torn web
thread by thread.
