26. The eyes

While doing these watercolour excercises I've found that if I get the eyes and lips right, the rest is fairly secondary. In this case it's the nose and eyes but I think it's still a valid point. Even the pipelike appearance of the hand is not bad enough to distract. Or I might be blind to my own work :)

This was a frame in a French thriller series (which means that it's a soap-opera with murders) that struck me as too intense for the rest of the material. So I painted it.

27. Dostojevski

A watercolour excercise from the Russian tv-adaptation of Dostojevski's Idiot. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out and I managed not to overdo it. Old dresses and suits with their folds and cuts are wonderful to paint!

28. Testing for Court

This zoo-theme made me think of the time earlier in the Autumn when I was hired as a court artist. It's fairly rare in Finland - artists are hired only for the most interesting (for the media) cases. So I had to get the fastest possible technique together over the weekend. This is one of those tests. I used my favourite paper - Fabriano colore - a red conte crayon and a black wax crayon. In this test I also used a blue colour pencil for colour contrast and a brush pen to add detail. It's scary how fast you can come up with a decent likeness with this technique! I think this took about 10 minutes.

29. Cabin painting fever

This was a really quick watercolour at our family's cabin in the summer. I saw the break in the cloud cover and raced inside for my paints. When the picture was finished I liked it so much I decided to sign it. And then I botched the signature! :D Ok, it's a monogram if that's the correct term in English, and in retrospect, the picture probably doesn't deserve a signature but it was an excellent excercise.

30. Red Glass

Well, I didn't exactly paint a cup but I drew a glass. I do realise that the purpose of the challenge was to actually paint ON the cup. So this probably doesn't count :) I've been having trouble with drawing cylinders in perspective (car tyres, bolts, round windows, glasses...) - in other words, ellipses. And this is one instance I almost had it. Then I mucked up the base.

Watercolour pencil on Fabriano pastel paper.

31. Cartoon me

I'm late, I know - but here's me as a heavily idealised cartoon character. I'm trying out a brush pen for the first time and it seems this one could replace the traditional version on less critical work. This was a half-hour quickie without looking in the mirror. That explains why I forgot I have glasses... I've only had them for 22 years!

32. "Momentum"

This was my Illustration Friday entry as well as a part of the "Troll on the Rooftop" comic teaser on my blog, which is updated daily until the 16th. The comments I have received for these images suggest that I've succeeded in conveying the kind of exhilaration I needed for this scene in the comic and that makes me very happy! I hope the rest is up to the same standard.

33. Troll on the Rooftop

This is the opening shot of my comic "Troll on the Rooftop". I submitted it to a Finnish comics competition and the winners will be announced on the 16th. Keep your fingers crossed!

If you find this interesting, I'll post more of the story on my blog every day until the 16th.

34. Free press

This is my first post on this wonderful blog, so thanks for accepting me! I did this illustration a while back for the cover of the annual magazine for the Finnish Association of Magazine Journalists (free translation, no pun intended). It's watercolour pencil and wax crayon on coloured paper. It was supposed to symbolise the purpose of journalism, which might be somewhat obvious.
