Note: I hope to keep up with 15 Words or Less Thursdays and Poetry Fridays, but other than that, I'll be taking a break from blogging for a bit. Our medical situation has me overwhelmed and behind in everything, so I'm having to cut down to the bone. See ya when I can.
Time for this week's 15 Words or Less exercise, a fast weekly game to wake up our poetry brains. If you've never played or want a reminder on the rules, please check out the guidelines!
Here's a cool living statue we saw at Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market in Boston last weekend. She stood totally still until someone put a dollar in the jar. Then she gracefully, with the exact same motion every time, reached into the container, drew out a fortune, handed it to the person, and settled back into her pose. Her gaze was especially creepy.
She makes me think of abused women, the fun part-time jobs theater kids have, and the Statue of Liberty. What does she make you think of? Take one of your answers and write a quick 15 Words or Less poem. It doesn't have to describe this picture. Just get into poetry mode and see what comes out!

I love thunderstorms, and my husband recently sent me this cool time-lapse image. It's all set for this week's 15 Words or Less exercise, a fast weekly game to wake up our poetry brains. If you've never played or want a reminder on the rules, please check out the guidelines!
Look at all these lightning strikes. This image makes me think of The Omen, the enormous storm we experienced while at Epcot last summer, and a great convention of wizards.

I'll have only sporadic and clunky online access the next couple of days, so I might not be able to comment. Please feel free to give each other kind and helpful feedback if you have time. Thanks!

I'm a day late and a few dollars short, but here's this week's 15 Words or Less exercise, a fast weekly game to wake up our poetry brains. If you've never played or want a reminder on the rules, please check out the guidelines!
Look at this poor coned dog! This image makes me think of a headgear, a scoliosis brace, and any other unsightly medical appliance that's for our own good. It reminds me of Elizabethan fashion and those enormous pleated collars. And it makes me think of the Jetsons. I'm not quite sure why.

Here are a few things that pop into my head when I look at this image: 1) a kid on a bike who can't read yet, zooming toward the cliff; 2) "Who's Cliff and what are we warning him about?" (I know, but that's what popped into my head, seriously); 3) cliff divers, and; 4) how we in America post a lot of signs to warn people--the little I've seen of other countries, they assume you'd better be smart enough to recognize, "Hey it's a cliff," and stay the heck away from the edge.
What comes into your head when you look at this warning sign? Take one of your answers and write a quick 15 Words or Less poem. It doesn't have to describe this picture. Just get into poetry mode and see what comes out!
Feel free to offer each other encouragement and feedback (see the guidelines link above), and I'll be back later today to see what you've got!

Raise your hand if you love the month of February!
Being born in February, I happen to think it's the greatest month in the calendar. But think about it - there are so many fun celebrations that it's like a Mardi Gras parade from start to finish. And what a finish! Some years there are 28 days. Some years, 29. Like this year!
Here are some of the celebrations happening in February:
Black History Month
2 - Groundhog Day
7 - Chinese New Year, Year of the Rat (that's me!), and Charles Dicken's Day
11 - Thomas Edison's Birthday
12- Abraham Lincoln's Birthday
14 - Valentine's Day
22 - George Washington's Birthday
29 - Leap Year Day
For a list of more holidays and celebrations, go to www.butlerwebs.com/holidays/february.htm
It's also Library Lovers' Month, honoring the value of school, public and private libraries. So don't forget to thank a librarian for all of his or her help. You can click on this posting's headline to connect to a site with ideas of how to celebrate Library Lover's Month.
Also, it's a big time for elementary school kids - the 100th Day of School! That's when kids bring in 100 things to celebrate being in school for 100 days. Check out my book The Night Before the 100th Day of School for some ideas.
