Chicago author Cynthea Liu (Keith Hale/Sun-Times)

BY DELIA O’HARA [email protected]

Chicagoan Cynthea Liu has hit the middle-school/teen book market with a bang this year, bringing out not one but two debut fiction books. The Oklahoma native, whose parents were both born in China, has used her heritage as a touchstone for both books.

Liu’s Paris Pan Takes the Dare is a middle-school mystery, shot through with comedy, about a “new girl” in a small town who fears her home is haunted by the ghost of a girl who died years before during a hazing-type ritual that Paris herself now must face. Read more …

28. “Take the Dare: Show You Care” Thank you letter from Tulakes

Tulakes Elementary students

Tulakes Elementary students

“As the principal of Tulakes Elementary, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have been a tremendous blessing, and words can hardly express what your generosity means to our staff and school.”

– Principal Roland

“I am bubbling over with excitement and anticipation because of the generosity you have shown towards Tulakes Elementary. You all are a testament to the greatness of the human race.” – 2nd gr. teacher Kim Hooks

“We at Tulakes are truly overwhelmed with what you have done for our school. You are helping our reading goals become a reality, and the childrens’ love for reading will certainly continue to grow because of your generosity.” – 3rd gr. teacher Michele Parham

Thank You Letter from Tulakes Elementary

Dear contributors and supporters of “Take the Dare: Show You Care”,

Tulakes Elementary would like to extend a warm thank you for supporting our school. You have raised a great deal of money to benefit literacy instruction for our students. To say that we are thrilled with your generous contributions is an understatement. We are so completely overwhelmed by your generosity! We would also like to thank Cynthea for the hard work she put in on our behalf while promoting a new book! What Cynthea has done, along with the help of so many people from the children’s book community, will benefit our students for the rest of their lives.

Statistics show that 80% of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year. Most of our students have an extremely, limited literacy background and get most of their reading time at school. It is our school-wide goal that at least 80% of our students will be reading on grade level. It has been a vision for our school to provide each classroom with leveled classroom libraries. We want to have leveled text available to students at all times. These leveled texts will be available to students during independent reading, learning centers, research time, writing time, reading instruction time, etc. We want our libraries to be supplied with more non-fiction, high interest books, and of course, the great books by all of you great authors.

Because of you, we will be able to accomplish just that. Also, we’ll be able to supply our teachers with additional resources to help strengthen our children’s reading and writing skills. For example our Pre-K can now purchase Handwriting Without Tears, a complete writing curriculum which contains reading and writing materials to get the children started with the process. Our kindergartners can have Take Home Reading Bags which contain a book and literature activities for parents to do at home with their child and return it back to school. In addition to leveled readers, our 1st-3rd Grades’ requests for things like book boxes, books with CDs for listening centers, classroom dictionaries, and Weekly Readers can now be met.

Words cannot express how thankful we are. Without your help, much of this would have never been purchased for our school Tulakes would like to thank you so much for your kindness and willingness to give.

With extreme gratitude,

Michele Parham on behalf of Tulakes Elementary

30. Over One Hundred Children’s Book Professionals Raise $15,000 for Title I School in Oklahoma

(Chicago, IL – July 13, 2009) In less than four weeks, the online book launch event “Take the Dare: Show You Care” has raised over $15,000 to support a Title I school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Over a hundred children’s book industry professionals including literary agents from the nation’s top agencies as well as prominent editors from major publishing houses like HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Penguin, and authors from bestselling to those just arriving on the scene have donated manuscript critiques and autographed prizes for the cause. Now Pre-K through 3rd grade classrooms will have new  enrichment resources such as books, book boxes, even LeapFrog systems, to supplement their reading and writing programs . Author Cynthea Liu, whose debut middle grade novel PARIS PAN TAKES THE DARE, is ecstatic about the outpouring of support from her colleagues, but she is not surprised. “The children’s and teen book industry is made of people who have the utmost love for children, books, and the power a good story can give to those who need it most.”

The teachers at Tulakes are excited to have their wishlists fulfilled, and students will arrive next fall to classrooms that are more than equipped to foster a love of reading and writing. Cynthea looks forward to visiting  the school in September and seeing the difference “Take the Dare: Show You Care” has made.

In addition to Tulakes Elementary, Ms. Liu has also chosen other Title I schools in her home state of Oklahoma to receive support through DonorsChoose.org.  To learn more about “Take the Dare: Show You Care,” please visit www.cynthealiu.com/showyoucare or contact [email protected].

As they discover their roles in a prophecy that has turned generations of sisters against each other, the girls find themselves entangled in a mystery that involves a tattoo-like mark, their parents’ deaths, a boy, a book, and a lifetime of secrets.

Lia and Alice don’t know whom they can trust.

They just know they can’t trust each other.

The Darer: Kelly Milner Halls is a quirky nonfiction author and speaker, specializing in “weird” (but cool) books for young readers including Tales of the Cryptids, Albino Animals and her upcoming release, Saving the Baghdad Zoo.  From Bigfoot to albinism to dinosaur poop, she offers reluctant readers a pathway to literacy in a most unusual way.  Halls studied journalism before she dedicated herself to writing for kids, so as odd as her topics may be, they are rooted in top notch research.  She makes her home in Spokane, Washington, where she also works as Chris Crutcher’s zany assistant.

The Dare: Place a minimum bid of $35 by leaving a comment, then outbid the highest bidder until you win!  Value: Priceless.

45. NEW! Full Manuscript Critique from Author Phoebe Kitanidis (Contemp Paranormal)

The Prize: One full manuscript critique of your fiction middle grade (244 pages, double-spaced max) or young adult novel (double-spaced, up to 100,000 words – DANG!).

The Darer:  Prior to becoming a full-time fiction writer, Phoebe Kitanidis was a Contributing Writer at Discovery Girls magazine for six years. (She’s also the author of the DG book Fab Girls’ Guide to Friendship Hardship.) A former creative writing and Language Arts teacher, she holds a Masters degree in Communication and has often spoken on Communication issues at literary conferences, conventions, and professional meetings. She and her husband live in Seattle, where she’s been exploring Pacific Northwest hobbies such as coffee drinking, zone 8 gardening (after growing up in California), and open water swimming (brrrrrrr!). Her teen paranormal Whisper comes out in April 2010.

About WHISPER

About WHISPER (Harper Collins, April 2010):

I’d love a cup of coffee. I wish she knew how pretty she was. I wish I could drop this kid in the dryer sometimes. I just want her to be happy. I hope she didn’t find out what Ben said about her. I wish I knew how many calories were in a bite of muffin…

Joy is used to hearing Whispers. She’s used to walking down the street and instantly knowing people’s deepest, darkest desires. She uses this talent for good, to make people happy and give them what they want. But for her older sister, Jessica, the family gift is a curse, and she uses it to make people’s lives—especially Joy’s—miserable. Still, when Joy Hears Jessica whisper: I want to kill my Hearing dead, and kill me too if that’s what it takes, she knows she has to save her sister, even if it means deserting her friends, stealing a car and running away with a boy she barely knows—a boy who may have a dark secret of his own.

46. NEW! Critique Package from Author Kathryn Fitzmaurice (Contemp Realistic)

I care because my own twelve year old son attends a Title I school and I am aware of the many needs a school like this has.

kathryn-fitzmaurice-150

Kathryn Fitzmaurice

The Prize:  One critique of the first fifteen pages of your double-spaced fiction middle grade novel AND your synopsis (2 pages, single-spaced maximum).

The Darer: When Kathryn Fitzmaurice was thirteen years old, her mother sent her to New York City over the summer to visit her grandmother, who was a science fiction author. After seeing how her grandmother could make the characters in her books into whomever she wanted, Kathryn decided that she, too, wanted to become a writer someday. Years later, after teaching elementary school, and taking many classes, she now writes full time and lives with her husband, two sons, and her dog, Holly, in Monarch Beach, California.  Kathryn was born in New York City, but grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. She holds a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University. Her favorite thing to do is walk her dog, Holly, who, she says is so smart, she can practically empty the dishwasher. She also likes organizing absolutely anything, including messy garages, closets, and even cluttered junk drawers. If she could, she would eat the same thing for lunch everyday, which would be a ham, Swiss cheese, and tomato Panini, a green apple, and a chocolate soufflé. Learn more about Kathryn.

“Kathryn Fitzmaurice is as beautiful person both inside and out. And her debut book–one destined to br a classic for every kids’ bookshelf, demonstrates that you, too, can break out, and breakout BIG. Let Kathryn show you how to revise your manuscript in a way that will produce a story that can withstand the test of time.” – Cynthea Liu.

swam on to the scene with the publication of Ugly Fish, written by Kara LaReau. Ugly Fish won the Bulletin of the Center of Children’s Books blue ribbon in 2006, and a Bilby award, an honor bestowed by Australia’s school children. In 2007, Hugo and Mile in I’ve Painted Everything and The Luck of the Loch Ness Monster were published and featured in the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show as well as its annual exhibition in New York. The Luck of the Loch Ness Monster was also selected as one of the NYPL’s 100 Books for Reading and Sharing for 2007. It was also selected as a finalist in the Texas Bluebonnet Award for 2008.  In 2008, Rabbit & Squirrel, a Tale of War and Peas and Scott’s own Mystery Ride! arrived in bookstores. Rabbit & Squirrel was selected as a Borders Original Voices pick. Mystery Ride!, Scott’s second authored book, is in stores now and is based on his adventures growing up in New Hampshire and Maine.

This year, Otto Grows Down by Michael Sussman made its debut, a time and space-bending tale, cautioning us to be careful of what we wish for. Also this year causing a stir is Spoon by Amy Krouse Rosental.  Spoon is about a little utensil who comes to know and love his own place in the universe. Spoon was selected as an IndieBound IndieNext list.

Scott thinks the best books for children take the ordinary, make it extraordinary and let them know “it’s all going to be ok. Now go to bed.” Scott currently lives in Massachusetts with his wife and two young sons.

About DONUT DAYS (Putnam)

Donut Days

Donut Days

DONUT DAYS’ main character, Emma, has a lot going on. Her best friend’s not speaking to her, a boy she’s known all her life is suddenly smokin’ hot, she’s at a camp-out for the opening of a donut shop, and oh yes — her evangelical pastor parents may lose their church. And that’s just this weekend. Suddenly, sixteen-year-old Emma has to make some serious choices: creationism or evolution, faith or freedom, Harley bikers or Frodo wannabes, and of course, cruller or glazed.
