29. Social studies gig

Work Type: writer - middle school social studies education

Description:
We are looking for freelance writers to write standards-aligned social studies content for our new interactive digital workbooks. These workbooks are a combination of informational text in "small bites" and reinforcing activities. We have existing content from our print workbooks, but need to expand and in many cases rewrite the text. Our existing text as well as public online resources will be used.

This is an immediate opening, and we are looking for one or a couple of candidates who have time to work on this project for grades 6-8 now. Our current focus is Georgia History and World History. We will have ongoing assignments as we convert our elementary grades and additional states, but our immediate need is now though July 31. At this time we are only looking for candidates for the immediate projects, but if you are not available now but interested in future assignments, you may submit your resume/information but please put Future Work in the subject line of your email.

We will provide guidelines and samples to help you get started on the right track.
In general our style is:
-Clear, straight-forward sentences
-Writing with purpose to help students understand key concepts
-Good organization of information into small bites
-Activities that help reinforce key content and key concepts
-Writing and activities aligned very tightly with the standards

We may also be interested in contracting someone to work on the glossary/vocabulary aspect of the project. And we are interested in contracting someone to work on creating the answers to all of the activities for the project.

Our pay for this project is $.20/word. Parts of this text may be pulled from a pdf of our existing workbook, but our experience has shown that over-reliance on existing text is not successful. It is possible that the rate could be increased for future assignments on an individual basis based on the work quality and amount of editing required. We would initially assign a small section of the project to make sure the job is a good fit.

We are based in Peachtree City, Georgia, and location near us would be a great benefit, but is not required. We have been in business 35 years, and the series this work is for is currently known as The Georgia Experience.

Thank you for your interest.

35. National Geopgraphic gig

National Geographic Books is looking for freelance copy editors and proofreaders to work on book-length projects in our adult and children’s divisions. We offer competitive hourly rates for copyediting and proofreading. Work is to be completed off-site as an independent contractor.

 About Us
National Geographic Books creates and distributes print and digital works that inspire, entertain, teach, and give readers access to a world of discovery—and possibility. Each year we publish more than 150 new books for adults, families, and children on a wide range of nonfiction subjects, from animals to travel, cartography to history, fun facts to moving stories. National Geographic books are available in 38 languages and more than 60 countries, and in countless bookstores, mass-market outlets, schools, libraries, and specialty retailers throughout the world.

 Responsibilities
 ·      Copyediting is to be completed in either MS Word (using track changes) or on paper (in page layout), depending on the project. Copy editors are expected to style manuscripts per house style (Chicago 16, M-W 11, NGS House Style Guide) and do basic fact-checking of names/dates/people/places. At times, copy editors may also be required to do light line editing as requested or needed. Copy editors are expected to compile a comprehensive style sheet for each project.
 ·      Proofreading is to be completed on hard copy or via Adobe Acrobat markup, depending on the project. Proofreaders are expected to proofread against manuscript or cold read, depending on the project, using the copy editor’s style sheet as a guideline. Proofreaders are to confirm that all elements from the manuscript have been correctly and consistently typeset and that no material is outstanding. They are also expected to mark any errors that may have occurred in typesetting as well as errors missed by the copy editor.
 ·
 Qualifications

44. Seeking experienced college essay consultants for ongoing freelance position

Overview

Seeking experienced college essay consultants for ongoing freelance position. Provide essay consulting and revision services to high school students. Earn $100-$195 per essay on average.

This is a part-time opportunity with flexible scheduling. The majority of client work will occur July-December, although top candidates will have the opportunity to take on clients throughout the year.

Responsibilities

Consultants will be matched with clients for one of two service packages (details for each package below). Consultants may choose to work with one client at a time or several clients simultaneously. You will work with each client throughout their entire consulting experience, acting as their single dedicated consultant.

Complete Package Responsibilities
  • Guide client through entire essay process
  • Hold a ~30 minute Skype or phone consultation with the client
  • Assist in brainstorming essay topic, main points, and subpoints
  • Assist in creating essay outline
  • Provide guidance as student drafts essay
  • Revise essay for content, structure, and language, reaching out to student for more information as needed.
  • Complete additional rounds of revisions if necessary

Note: After the initial consultation, contact with client may occur via email.

Revision Package Responsibilities
  • Revise essay draft for content, structure, and language, reaching out to student for more information as needed.
  • Offer a Skype or phone consultation to review feedback (note: some clients will prefer email contact only)
  • Complete additional rounds of revisions if necessary

Requirements

Above all, we are looking for consultants who can help guide clients to college essay excellence. Of course, this requires top-notch writing and revision skills. But you’ll also need a knack for working with high school students - from explaining amorphous concepts to motivating discouraged students to do their best.

Successful candidates will generally have prior experience with college essay consulting and revision. The following will also be helpful:

  • Desire to work with both US and international clients: A significant portion of our clients are foreign students hoping to attend university in the United States.
  • Customer-service orientation: As the face of the company for clients, consultants commit to our promise of complete satisfaction.
  • Attention to detail: No typos, missed deadlines, etc.
  • Timeliness and responsiveness

Compensation

Complete package: $0.30/word ($195 for 650-word Common App essay)
Revision package: $0.20/word ($130 for 650-word Common App essay)

Top consultants will have the opportunity for pay raises after a demonstrated history of excellent work.

Organizational Structure and Support

One of our team members manages and supports all consultants through assignments. We’ll provide training to get you started and be available for help at any time. Have a difficult client? Faced with unrealistic client expectations? We won’t leave you to deal with the issue alone.

To apply, please email your resume to [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!

47. Editorial opportunity

Academic grant writer (biological sciences) :
Looking for an academic editor who is comfortable working with material in biological/chemical sciences.

Subject area knowledge is unimportant as long as you are

- familiar with publishing in academic journals
- can demonstrate that you have have written and edited journal articles
- have submitted successful grant proposals to granting agencies such as NSERC/CIHR
- have edited tenure portfolios, CV, web content for academic faculty

A successful applicant must be able to

- work with table of contents functions in MS word
- be able to handle files produced using Endnote or other bibliographic software
- a good eye for document organization and attention to detail
- have a short and reliable turnaround time on manuscripts

If  you are working from home with young children or have an existing  position that is more than 30 hours a week, there is unlikely to be a  good fit! This work is very flexible, but requires long periods of  concentration to deadline. I will always query ahead to give you time to  plan your schedule, but I have had poor previous experience with  editors who are not working at editing as a full-time profession. If  your time is divided between many competing activities, it is unlikely  you will be able to keep the focus needed for this type of editorial  work.

It would be an asset if you have experience writing for the  web, as well as a good eye for document organization, layout and  design.

Benefits of this position:

- working with a very experienced editor (e.g. journals such as Nature) who has high standards and pays promptly
- exposure to a wide variety of challenging tasks that will provide valuable experience in grant-writing, journal editing
- an opportunity for longer-term (ongoing) work on a flexible schedule. Location: Remote Rate: $ 30-45 per hour based on experience
