2. Emma Watson’s Feminist Book Club to Read a Gloria Steinem Memoir

Earlier this week, Emma Watson announced the launch of a feminist book club called Our Shared Shelf. The actress and United Nations women goodwill ambassador shared a photo on Twitter (embedded above) with the first read for the group: My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a new selection will be made on a monthly basis. Thus far, more than 78,000 people have joined this group. Some of the celebrity participants include actress Sophia Bush, soccer star Abby Wambach, and filmmaker Lena Dunham. At this point in time, it is not known if singer Taylor Swift or author J.K. Rowling will also take part.

Over at the Goodreads page for Our Shared Shelf, Watson revealed the origins behind this venture: “As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode…I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.”

3. Emma Watson Launches a Feminist Book Club

Emma WatsonEmma Watson has decided to launch a feminist book club. The actress and United Nations women goodwill ambassador posted a message on Twitter asking for help on figuring out a name for it.

Here’s more from The Guardian: “After suggestions including ‘Wats Up Fems’, ‘Watson Your Shelf’ and ‘Hermione’s Army’, Watson announced today that she ‘absolutely loved’ Twitter user @emilyfabb’s suggestion: ‘Our Shared Shelf’ and foreshadowed further information about the book club was still to come. Twitter’s response has been enthusiastic: alongside punters, retired American footballer Abby Wambach, actor Sophia Bush, and singer Kate Voegele have all tweeted they would take part in the club, with Watson agreeing to ask Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and singer Taylor Swift to join in.”

Wambach, a world-renowned soccer champion, might have given Watson the inaugural title for the book club: My Life On the Road by Gloria Steinem. Steinem herself tweeted back at Bush, Watson, and Wamback with this proposition: “After we do this digitally we’ll have to do this in person!”

9. EOY Super SAYNG! Taylor Swift

The Church of Taylor

If you haven’t been to a Taylor Swift concert, let me tell you – it’s an experience. Not just the production itself – elaborate sets, unexpected effects, even the large block of time in the middle of the show when she walks around the venue meeting the fans – but the feeling that surges like a current through the arena. Taylor’s fans bring almost as much energy as the star herself with their shirts and lights and signage…and the way they sing along with her every word. I’m talking every person, every word, every song, not unlike – and I say this without the slightest hint of facetiousness – a congregation.

Her music is catchy, yes – as is her personality – but I believe her lyrics are what speak to the devoted fans. Taylor has a gift for putting into words what every girl has felt at one time or another and, when she shares her experiences so poetically and so publicly, it truly validates and empowers all of her empathetic listeners as well.

Say there’s a boy at school you like who doesn’t know you exist, or a mean girl who’s spreading nasty rumors about you; you feel just a little less alone when you know that Taylor Swift has been there, too. Not that it’s just a teen thing; as an adult, I can both remember the intensity of those moments and appreciate how excellently Taylor is able to capture and express them.

And for the naysayers who think that’s easy to do, let me put it this way: she’s able to condense all of the events and emotions of a significant period of time, be it the length of a season or an entire relationship, into only a dozen lines of verse; it took me 3 books to cover one summer in my SOLID series!

So yes, I’m a fan of Taylor, and I’ve pasted below some of my favorite lines from her songs so you can see why:

21. You Are What You Read

What am I reading now? The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by K. DiCamillo

On Thursday, October 28, 2010, Scholastic launched You Are What You Read, a new social networking site for readers. The main focus of You Are What You Read is to both “celebrate those books that helped us discover who we are and who we can become.”

Users can log on through existing social media accounts, namely Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Google, LinkedIn and MySpace. Once users have logged on they have the chance to not only share the five books that made a difference in their lives but also connect with readers around the world through shared “Bookprints.” Daniel Radcliffe, Taylor Swift and Venus Williams are just a few of the more than 130 “Names You Know” who have shared their Bookprints.

In addition, You Are What You Read provides users with the opportunity to:

  • Discover new books through an interactive web that shows how users’ Bookprints are connected

  • Find and connect with users across generations and from around the world to see the books in their Bookprints

  • Compare their Bookprints to those of the participating “Names You Know,” and find out if they share a book in their Bookprint with famous athletes, award-winning entertainers, world-renowned scientists or iconic business leaders

  • “Favorite” other books they like and check out what similar users enjoy reading

  • See which books have been chosen as Favorites from around the world

  • Share a book in the real word through Pass It On, which encourages users to give a favorite book to a family member, a friend or even a complete stranger

  • In the spirit of You Are What You Read and to get the ball rolling even further, here’s my Bookprint:

    1. Love You Forever by Robert Munsch

    2. Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

    3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

    4. The Giver by Lois Lowry
