When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its nominees for the 2015 Academy Awards, the James Franco/Seth Rogen comedy The Interview wasn’t on the list. That Oscar spurned this “bromance” surprised nobody. Most critics hated the film and even Rogen’s fans found it one of his lesser works. Those audiences almost didn’t have a chance to see the film.

Josh Hutcherson has been cast in The Disaster Artist. In the past, he (pictured, via) has acted in several book-based projects such as Bridge to Terabithia, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant, and The Hunger Games film franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story for this film adaptation comes from a non-fiction book written by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell. The story chronicles the creative process for “The Room, which is widely considered one of the worst movies of all time.”

Jezebel reports that Sestero actually starred in The Room. James Franco will serve as the director and also take on a lead acting role for this film adaptation. (via Tor.com)

Filmmaker and actor James Franco has assembled a cast of high-profile actors for his adaptation of John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle.

Paper Towns star Nat Wolff (pictured, via) has landed the lead role of Jim Nolan. Other actors who have signed on for this project include John Savage, Selena Gomez, Vincent D’Onofrio, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Bryan Cranston, Sam Shepard, Danny McBride, and Franco himself.

Here’s more from Deadline: “The story takes place, of course, during a time in this country when employees were organizing into unions or trying to fight for better treatment and wages from their employers. The same year Steinbeck’s story takes place, the Steelworkers union was founded, as was the Textile union.” (via Entertainment Weekly)

James Franco has landed the lead role of Jake Epping in the 11/22/63 mini-series.

According to Deadline, Franco’s character is \"an unassuming divorced English teacher who stumbles upon a time portal that leads to 9/9/1958 and goes on a quest to try and prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which occurred on November 22, 1963.” The actor will also serve as a producer.

This nine-hour adaptation, based on Stephen King’s 2011 thriller novel, will air on Hulu. Variety reports that “at the time of the series’ announcement, King commented, ‘If I ever wrote a book that cries out for longform, event-TV programming, ‘11/22/63’ is it.'” King has been named one of the executive producers for this project. A trailer has been unleashed for True Story. This film adaptation is based on Michael Finkel’s memoir which shares the same title. The video embedded above features James Franco as Christian Longo and Jonah Hill as Finkel. A limited release date has been scheduled for April 10, 2015. (via The Hollywood Reporter)

Earlier this year, journalists Joy Press and Carolyn Kellogg conducted an informal survey and collected more than 200 responses at the The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. This data, illustrations from artist Paul Duginski, and programming from graphic designer Jon Schleuss were used to create the “how to be a writer” digital board game.

Some of the steps that aspiring writers can take include starting a diary, going to the Yaddo writer’s retreat, revising, signing up for a writing class with James Franco, and winning a National Book Award. What do you think?

Actor/director James Franco has a new book coming out from Insight Editions later on this month called Hollywood Dreaming: Stories, Pictures, and Poems.

In his latest work, The Paris American’s “Poet of the Week” from April, tells his story of coming up in Hollywood through poetry, short stories, photos and paintings. USA Today has an excerpt of the new work. Here is a sample:

Paul Whitlatch is leaving Simon & Schuster’s Scribner imprint to join the Hachette Books as Senior Editor later this month. He will be reporting to Hachetter Publisher Mauro DiPreta.

The editor has worked with a number of  bestselling authors including: actor James Franco, Harvard education expert Tony Wagner, novelist David Goodwillie and former CIA attorney John Rizzo. Here is more about his latest work from the press release: “His recent projects include Enough, a book on gun violence by former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly; Consumed, the debut novel by film director David Cronenberg; and MIT scientist David Rose’s Enchanted Objects, a book about the future of technology.”

According to his LinkedIn page, Whitlatch spent six years at Scribner as an editor. Prior to that he was an editorial assistant at W.W. Norton & Company. He also serves as an adjunct instructor at New York University, as well as a moderator at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In 2011, Whitlatch was a Frankfurt Fellow and in 2013 he was named a Visiting International Publisher by the Australian Council for the Arts. He will begin his new post will join Hachette July 21st.

Vice's annual fiction issue hit newsstands this week. The theme of this year's issue is Hollywood and all of the stories have something to do with movies. The issue includes contributions from: David Mamet, Michel Gondry, Louis Mellis, Alec Sokolow, John Romano, Merrill Markoe, Kevin McEnroe, Emily McLaughlin and Benjamin Nugent. James Franco even wrote a story about Lindsey Lohan. Vice explained their approach to attracting so much talent on their site: "We shared an intuition that a lot of the most interesting writing being done today is being done for movies and TV. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that we watch a lot of movies. So we made a long list of our favorite movies and looked up the writers who worked on them, and we harassed them and their agents and their publicists for months. We started with a really long pitch letter, but we learned that in LA it's proper etiquette to write three-word-long emails. We tried to romance them by inviting them to dinner at the Chateau Marmont."

Tribeca Film has unveiled a trailer for the Palo Alto movie adaptation. Deadline reports that this film, based on James Franco’s 2010 short story collection, marks the directorial debut of Gia Coppola.

Google has created a Doodle to celebrate John Steinbeck’s 112th birthday. Throughout his writing career, Steinbeck penned many beloved works including East of Eden, Of Mice & Men, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning title, The Grapes of Wrath.

To this day, Steinbeck is a widely respected and read author. According to SFGate, the organizers behind the Steinbeck Festival plan to celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Grapes of Wrath at this year’s event. In April, the Of Mice & Men play starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd will open on Broadway.

The Weinstein Company plans to create a biopic profiling world renowned author, J.D. Salinger.

The film will focus on the period when Salinger was serving in the military during World War II up until the publication of his beloved novel, Catcher in the Rye.

Onyx Films, the Paris-based producer of the fantasy film Upside Down and the low-budget animated sci-fi Renaissance, is currently working on an animated film adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s 1943 novella The Little Prince.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film has now gained a voice cast comprised of James Franco, Rachel McAdams, Jeff Bridges, Benicio Del Toro and Paul Giamatti. More notably, the film is to be directed by Mark Osborne, co-director of Dreamworks’ 2008 hit action-comedy Kung Fu Panda.

Some may consider it unusual for the director of a successful animated film from a major American studio to move on to a project from a small foreign studio, however when you consider the diversity of Osborne’s previous work: live action sequences in Spongebob Squarepants, music video work for “Weird Al” Yankovic and a half-dozen live action and stop motion film projects, it seems like his experience may aid a project of any size.

Amazon has created its own literary fiction imprint called Little A. Designer Chip Kidd created the logos for this new corner of Amazon Publishing.

The new imprint will focus on novels, memoirs and story collections. It will include books by James Franco, A.L. Kennedy and Jenny Davidson.  The publisher will also open a digital-only series that will be part of the larger imprint. Check it out:

Day One is a digital-only series within Little A that is focused on short stories from debut writers and is available in North America and in the U.K. The first title, Kodi Scheer’s, haunting, fabulist “When a Camel Breaks Your Heart” was released on February 5, 2013. On March 19, Day One will release “Monster” by McSweeney’s contributor Bridget Clerkin, in which a woman struggles to keep her dysfunctional family together amid unsettling events–the family dog goes missing and an unidentified, mysterious animal corpse washes up on the beach.

Lindsay Lohan has reportedly signed a £2.1million deal to pose for a nude photography book. According to The Daily Mirror, Academy Award host James Franco will be her partner for this project.

The video embedded shows the pair in the trailer for an imaginary action film in the 2006 film, The Holiday. Lohan and Franco will be shot by celebrity photographer Terry Richardson. In the past, Richardson has snapped the pictures of Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z, and many others.

The Mirror reports: “Richardson has persuaded Lindsay and James to get involved. He has assured them it will be provocative but tasteful … Obviously there will be comparisons to Madonna’s 1992 Sex book. But James and Lindsay believe theirs will be classier.” (Via Sarah Weinman)
