Journalist Michael Gabriele will be here to sign and discuss his newly published book The History of Diners in New Jersey on Saturday, October 5th at 2:00.
The History of Diners in New Jersey deals with New Jersey history during the 20th century, as told through the story of the diner business. Gabriele pinpoints July 3, 1912 as the start of the Garden State’s diner history. Extensive research and interviews offer a portal on the early days of lunch wagons and diners, providing detailed information, first-hand interviews, context and perspective. The book gathers important pieces of the historical puzzle (people, events, places, dates, facts and figures) and assembles them into a cohesive narrative that traces the 101 years of New Jersey diner history.
Over the years New Jersey rightfully has been proclaimed the “Diner Capital of America.” The title reflects the many (an estimated 370) diners in the state. The book provides stories of diners, present and past, and traces the life journeys of the people and families who owned and operated them. These tales are woven into the evolution of towns and roadways throughout the Garden State.

Local Historian Bonnie-Lynne Nadzeika will be at the Morristown and Township Library on Thursday, January 31st at 7:00 P.M. to speak and sign copies of her book Morristown.
The seat of Morris County, Morristown began as a small rural settlement centered around a common green. The small village soon earned its place in American history when George Washington chose to make Morristown the site of his headquarters twice during the Revolutionary War. Just a few decades later, history was made again when Samuel Morse made Alfred Vail his partner in developing the telegraph at Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown. The town continued to grow as successive immigrant groups created ethnic enclaves. The Gilded Age came to Morristown, and by 1900, dozens of millionaires called the community home and brought the trappings of wealth, from lavish homes to social clubs. Today, while Morristown continues to evolve, numerous historic sites and museums document its rich past.

Herbert J. Stern is considered one of the most famous district attorneys in the history of the United States. He helped catch the killers of Malcolm X, indicted the head of the French CIA for shipping 100 pounds of heroin into the United States, prosecuted the real-life Tony Soprano, and convicted the mayors of Newark, Jersey City, and Atlantic City. He will be here to sign copies of his new book Diary of a DA on Tuesday, September 11th at 7:00 P.M.
In 1961, twenty-five-year-old Herbert Jay Stern, fresh from reserve duty, stood in his green army uniform in a New York County courtroom to be sworn in as an attorney. He could only guess what his life as a prosecuting lawyer would be. A dozen years later, in the wake of the national scandal of Watergate, Stern, draped in black robes now, would take the oath of office as a federal judge. In the years between, the idealistic young Stern would sharpen his skills in the realities of the criminal courts of New York City, to emerge as the lead trial attorney for the Justice Department, charged with breaking the back of organized crime in New Jersey.
In a rave review, Publisher's Weekly noted that The Diary of a D.A was ... "Extremely well written, Sternas account of his personal and professional quest to uphold the law and justice is finely realized and quite impressive."
